Any good UK owned options?

No.

Good news is you can rejoin Amazon Prime.

Ponderingwindow · 05/04/2025 05:42

Do whatever you want. I’m going to use one of the few places that consistently allows me to access medically necessary supplies with any semblance of affordability.

Blinkyy · 05/04/2025 05:46

Amazon pays almost no tax in the U.K. -they are based in Ireland.
we used to go to shops, they paid tax on their premises, tax on their profits - thanks partly to companies like Amazon we can’t afford to run the nhs, schools.
Hope you all enjoy their great service !!

Everysand · 05/04/2025 05:48

Prime is good value and reliable, costs similar to a supermarket pass and you get the streaming service thrown in as well, but obviously if you don't want to use it just buy your stuff from elsewhere. I sometimes use eBay for the odd thing but I do prefer to know which day delivery is and with a lot of online stores it is a bit of an unknown.

That is for the government to sort out, they set the taxes we all pay and Amazon pay the taxes that they have to. Do you pay extra tax that the government hasn't told you to

Yes not saying it isn’t for the Gov but no one on this thread mentioned the no Paying of tax in fact it is praised for being a big employer !!!!!
How many people do they think were employed by all the high street shops in every town before Amazon came along - no comparison.
We are paying a huge US trillion dollar business - that means the money leaves the U.K. for the US and isn’t going towards the running of the U.K.

Everysand · 05/04/2025 05:58

Maybe rather than posting on here people should write to their MP instead if they are not happy with the taxes being paid, maybe they could also mention large UK companies that have minimum wage employees subsidised by benefits at the same time.

Blinkyy · 05/04/2025 06:04

I don’t think any’large ‘ uk companies compare with Amazon
From one google search Amazon made $553 billion in 2023 😂

That is entirely down to the government and councils who do not make it easy for shops on the High Street to thrive and let other companies pay less tax. Amazon are paying the taxes that they have to, do you expect them to make a donation.

Have you written to your MP complaining about this, I bet not.

Blinkyy · 05/04/2025 06:09

No, I expect users to know they aren’t paying tax here so they can make a judgement as to whether to use them or not. Whiich is why I posted above.

No as I am in Scotland and the gov is a waste of space.

Nonsensesponsence · 03/04/2025 21:21

It's American owned.

Oh ffs…

Left · 05/04/2025 07:28

I cancelled a few months ago. There wasn’t much I was watching on the streaming service and I found that most products were cheaper elsewhere so it wasn’t good value for me.

I didn’t know Bezos was a big Trump donator - depressing but not surprising.

Chocolatefreak · 05/04/2025 07:46

I agree with some of the other posters here - and at the risk of virtue signalling - surely everyone is aware how little tax Bezos and the other digital giants pay? I’m trying to avoid Amazon as much as possible. I still have a Kindle though I don’t have streaming services, I buy food from the supermarket or local market, go to the diy store in person etc.

What does everyone else use Amazon for?

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 05/04/2025 07:53

What does everyone else use Amazon for?

Toiletries, books, presents, bits for the house, cat litter, stationery.

I don't want to spend my weekends traipsing round shops. Just like I get my groceries, clothes, and make up delivered.

minnienono · 05/04/2025 07:56

I’ve never had it, if I do buy from amazon I get it sent to the boxes free of charge anyway and it rarely takes more than 2 days.

Sarah2891 · 05/04/2025 08:02

I'm lucky that an amazon pick up point is literally across the road from me, so I don't need to pay for prime/postage.

Langdale3 · 05/04/2025 08:11

The Amazon PR people, crawling around on this thread… 😂😂😂

Mass boycotts work. Look at Tesla!

If you can’t cut them all out, reduce your spend at these businesses, or target specific sectors. For me some of the tech company offerings are harder to find replacements, but no one in the UK needs to eat food produced by US based corporations.

I cut out Amazon years ago due to their poor labour practices and inadequate tax contribution, but following the initial announcements around Canada / Mexico / Greenland, I am now boycotting a much wider selection of US owned corps.

Everysand · 05/04/2025 08:22

My order for today:
2 x 24 Pepsi Max, these come from Amazon if online grocery shop doesn't have them or not on offer
7.5 kg bulk moisture trap stuff to put in the caravan,
Toothpaste, cheaper on Amazon
Chocolates, ditto
Descaler,
washing machine cleaner

I also get Elizabeth Arden stuff as it is cheaper than elsewhere, gardening stuff, cleaning and laundry items if on offer.

I don't shop in actual shops or supermarkets much as I prefer to walk as retail park about a mile away and I can't carry a lot so maybe pop in M&S for a couple of things and browse other shops and maybe buy clothes if I see something nice, I can only really carry one bag.

You can still buy online without using Amazon! 😂 I don’t traipse around shops either, although a little bookshop browsing is nice

You know you can borrow ebooks from your local library? You need to have a library card and just register online using your membership number. All free.

TranceNation · 05/04/2025 09:28

Free market. It's up to you if it's offering is not for you. I just wish we could have the option to cancel the BBC licence subscription.
