That's it.

I have been trying to not use amazon for a while, occasionally slipping, and I’m trying harder now.

They are a big employer but their workers work in horrific conditions, and they don’t pay enough tax in the UK. It is far better for the UK economy if we buy this stuff elsewhere.

I know of two people that work in different departments but in the same distribution centre and they LOVE it. But both have had awful personal circumstances occur, unrelated to work, and both were so well supported and valued. Both very low-level workers too, so not that they were just looking after the management. It may just be that particular centre has good management though.

But people are selectively ‘boycotting ‘ those things that they don’t miss anyway, and then claiming the moral high ground. Hypocritical unless you boycott something that actually matters to you.

Op already uses prime so I’m going to assume she’ll miss it. I try very hard to never use Amazon due to their tax avoidance. My life would be easier if I just ordered everything with one click and it was delivered the next day. There are also plenty of things I’d like to watch on prime (that new series with comedians, for example, is one that I’m sad to miss out on).
Instead I am prepared to put in time and effort to shop around for multiple reasons - avoiding Amazon, supporting smaller businesses instead of billionaires, the environment, etc .
It’s really not a case of boycotting things “you won’t miss anyway” - I think we can all agree that Amazon makes life more convenient for most people.

I have just done a large Prime order as I buy a lot of my groceries from them, I don't like shops with their DIY checkouts

Why don’t you just use a supermarket delivery service instead?

Mnetcurious · 04/04/2025 07:40

Yanbu. I try to avoid spending any money with those tax-dodgers.

Yes, I stopped using Amazon some years ago (2018-ish) when their tax-dodging and treatment of staff came to light. I honestly haven't missed them.

I use that as well, Waitrose is coming Sunday but they don't have everything I use.

Amazon's founder, billionaire Jeff Bezos donated to Trump's inauguration. Trump is destroying the global economy (except for Russia, he's exempted them for some reason).

I mean, that’s a better quality reason than “I cancelled Amazon Prime because it’s American”.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/04/2025 21:19

I keep it for deliveries but if it was just for streaming Prime TV I would absolutely cancel

This absolutely.

Though if I buy or rent a video I do tend to do it on prime. I got it for deliveries but it's not very good now.

Amazon is full of Chinese shit that breaks immediately. Its not as good as it used to be. I tend to look for things in shops more now as the price is better.

PinkyFlamingo · 04/04/2025 09:37

Why would you be unreasonable not to use a service you don't want? Don't get it

Roseshavethorns · 04/04/2025 09:37

I cancelled mine after Christmas.
The unexpected benefit is that I now think twice before ordering from Amazon.
I have saved a small fortune.

To wake up their voters?

everythingeverything1981 · 04/04/2025 09:47

Yeah, don't think they will even notice tbh.

Yeah, don't think they will even notice tbh.

The Tesla boycotts had a big impact on both musk and his key shareholders. People definitely noticed

An Amazon boycott could be even more impactful.

Shame people are happy to fund fascism

godmum56 · 04/04/2025 09:50

Well your choice but it saves me a FORTUNE in fuel and parking as well as the annoyance of going from shop to shop to find stuff. I didn't vote because its your choice but because its US owned????? nuts! I am not getting rid of my Mac or iphone either.

Thank you. I've been following that news quite closely.

I would really love to think that the OP cancelling Prime would lead to a stock market recovery. Unfortunately, I think we will just have to watch it play out for now.

We’ve got a distribution centre where I live and loads of people work there. They all love it and have no complaints about the way they are treated.

xanthomelana · 03/04/2025 21:26

YABU. Amazon employs over 75,000 people in the UK making it a top private sector employer. Amazon hasn’t put tariffs on anyone so their UK staff don’t need to be punished.

Amazon UK are a terrible employer though.

I cancelled my account years ago. It’s usually cheaper to buy goods direct these days as well.

Tvp123 · 04/04/2025 09:56

I have cancelled because it is American owned. I don't order too much outside of the Xmas period and will just suck up any extra costs or go out to the shops to get what I need. I never watch the tv shows or films.
I'd say go for it, the USA needs isolating, they are a massive danger to world order now.

Everysand · 04/04/2025 09:59

I just ordered 2 x 24 packs of Pepsi Max, I certainly don't want to be lugging that from trolley to car to house or buying the expensive small packs

everythingeverything1981 · 04/04/2025 09:42

Why are people boycotting America?

The policies Trump has introduced are awful. The place is going backwards in terms of freedoms and civil liberties, and it will have a knock on effect on us and the rest of the world. The country was the pioneer of freedoms and that is now being rolled back.

MissyPants · 04/04/2025 10:00

We did, it's £90 a year we can do without. We found the stuff we wanted to watch we still had to pay for as the included films etc aren't that great. Also i get around the free postage thing by getting it delivered at a post office or to Asda or whatever for free, and I just pick it up.

Mnetcurious · 04/04/2025 10:02

everythingeverything1981 · 04/04/2025 09:47

Yeah, don't think they will even notice tbh.

One person they won’t of course, but if plenty of others are thinking like the op and cancel then they definitely will - look at what happened with Tesla.

Stock markets aside, are you not fussed about the fact there is a fascist government in charge of the USA, propped up by a cartel of billionaires including Musk and Bezos and Putin ?

Mnetcurious · 04/04/2025 10:02

Exactly. It's made a big difference, money talks and consumers have huge power that they can exercise by choosing where they do (or do not) spend it
