What Web browser do you use? Chrome? American owned. Bing? American owned. Have you made sure your pension savings are not invested in US companies? Have you stopped watching all US tv programmes and films? Will you refuse to fly on holiday if the plane is a Boeing? Stopped listening to American music? If not, you have only just started.

Actually the Tesla boycott has been quite impactful. Precisely because it was targeted at a key figure in the Trump circus. The shareholders are furious and even Musk has clearly been shaken by the impact.

Bezos is also aligning himself very closely and publicly with Trump and so is a sensible target for boycott and protest. What he has done with the Washington Post is revolting and undemocratic. He also is only so wealthy because he treats his workers so poorly.

I think a decent targeted boycott of Amazon is far better than a vague boycott of anything American

Deliveries would cost me a fortune if I didn't have prime. No yanbu

I thought Amazon Prime was a tv subscription?

OxfordInkling · 04/04/2025 08:24

I love Amazon. I get prime periodically.

Amazon is an incredibly important employer that has saved many in my home area from living off benefits.

Stop with the performative self righteousness.

It's the whole package. TV streaming and free unlimited deliveries and a few other bits and bods.

Kendodd · 04/04/2025 08:35

I haven't used Amazon for years so not sure my opinion is worth that much. I an far, far, far from perfect, but I do try to be an ethical shopper. I figure where I spend my money is actually the greatest political power I have and even more significant than who I vote for.

DH and I cancelled ours in February - not sure why we both had prime. We haven’t purchased a thing from Amazon since. Not missing it and it’s saved me a fortune.

I've started using ECOSIA instead of Google.

We're sticking with it, thanks. 👍But you do you. Nothing to debate. 🙂

Agree - thread makes no sense😂
In my case I buy everything on Amazon my first go to - total waste of time to schlep around the shops -rarely anything I need that can’t wait till the next day. Luckily I live at the end of a cul de sac and have a garden with a high wall so the delivery derived can just leave parcels on the doorstep safely,

So whatever you were buying you didn’t actually have any need for?

Ariela · 04/04/2025 08:42

I rarely shop on Amazon - only to catch free Prime trial and Clarkson's Farm about once a year. Always remove my card from their database immediately after shopping and cancel Prime. Prefer to use genuine local small businesses where I can.

There’s certainly an element of that, but I do think I got into a habit of just buying from Amazon and not looking elsewhere. Basically, being lazy.

Halfemptyhalfling · 04/04/2025 08:43

Amazon has shut down local shops so instead of having local employment in lovely shops and department stores there are soulless warehouse jobs where they can be reluctant to give you toilet breaks. It's also a swap female jobs to male jobs.

I usually find a cheaper option to Amazon - even if they look cheaper it's normally because it's a different product

It’s rare that I find something cheaper elsewhere than on Amazon tbh

What does that mean ? You think she'll cancel then sign up again?
One problem I've faced is the default gift card seems to be Amazon. A solution, is to donate them to charity.

I have found a few things really hard to find an alternative to, most notably WhatsApp. How does WhatsApp make money anyway? It doesn't carry advertisements that I can see. It must make money somehow?

I’ve found that It really isn’t and that has been an eye opener. Lots of things are cheaper if you buy direct from the manufacturer.

Edited to add the “ I’ve found”

You still get free delivery on orders over £35, and they take 2-3 days instead of next day.

We haven’t paid for Prime for a year because of the soaring costs and the introduction of ads to an already paid subscription and, despite ordering frequently, we consolidate orders and refuse to pay for premium delivery. It’s perfectly possible to do.

It's American owned.

Like Boots the Chemist and probably lots of other companies. Do you boycott Boots?

Kendodd · 04/04/2025 09:01

Actually, thinking about it, a Global 'cancel Amazon' coordinated day, would be brilliant and really send a message if supported enough.

I'd be temped to sign up just so I could cancel Grin

In fairness, I would go to shops more if I could get my wheelchair round them, but most don't give a monkeys about accessibility.

There is a lovely manager of Claire's who re-jigged the layout of their store so I could take DD in there though, so we go there regularly.

rather than berate someone for only boycotting some things I would say well done- everyone needs to be good enough not perfect - parenting , housework, boycots

Agree.

But also anyone informed knows exactly why Bezos /Amazon is a good logical target. His behaviour as owner of the Washington Post is abhorrent. His personal wealth is abhorrent.

But people are selectively ‘boycotting ‘ those things that they don’t miss anyway, and then claiming the moral high ground. Hypocritical unless you boycott something that actually matters to you.

I disagree, boycotting Amazon was a massive change for me, I had become really reliant on it.

Actually I have now found a local shop that will deliver certain things to me, so not only have I stopped using Amazon but I am supporting a local business

WhySoManySocks · 04/04/2025 09:12

I have been trying to not use amazon for a while, occasionally slipping, and I’m trying harder now.

They are a big employer but their workers work in horrific conditions, and they don’t pay enough tax in the UK. It is far better for the UK economy if we buy this stuff elsewhere.
