Had this for the first time ever yesterday. Well! My oh my! What a revelation! Beats ketchup and Eve mayo any day of the week. Try it and see if I’m being unreasonable 😋. Also - any more fabulous foody wonders out there I might be missing? What do you knock up when you just want a once in a blue moon self indulgent treat?

Do you mean like poutine? I had it at a Blue Jays game in Toronto. I didn't love it, but I'm not a gravy person.

Chips and gravy is the BEST (from a West Midlander!) followed by…

Chips and curry sauce
Chips and mayo
Chips and ketchup

And now my pregnant self wants all of the above! 😭

Chips and gravy was one of my cravings.

As a die hard northerner, I concur. Food of the gods 👌🏻

Add mushy peas and scraps, and it’s a veritable feast 😘

I need a gravy recipe from a Northerner. I make the bog standard bbc food gravies

Raging pudding.

So it's the soft yet thick suet pastry of a steak and kidney pudding, flat and rectangular shape, steamed (traditionally in a rag) , similar filling of steak but no kidney.

Once cut, like a well made omelette, the insides start oozing out their goodness, to be mopped up with the odd chip or dipped muffin....just a smudge of ketchup, and voila....chefs kiss 💋

Shut up! that sounds immense. Where would I get 1 of those?

nomas · 03/04/2025 13:52

By gravy do you mean Bisto type stuff? Gross 🤮

It’s just potato starch flavoured with MSG. Hardly food of the gods.

JustinOtherdad · 03/04/2025 13:56

Brace yourself, OP. Mince & chips!

Beef mince slow cooked with onions and a thick rich gravy, spooned over a pate of chips.

Whimsicalgrape · 03/04/2025 13:56

Us northerners have chips and gravy running through our veins. It's a dietary staple.

Hush your mouth 🤣🤣 ‘Bisto’ does not good gravy make 🙀

Proper gravy…made from meat juices 👌🏻

Clarinet1 · 03/04/2025 14:10

No, I’m afraid I agree with those who say that the essence of a chip is its crispness; Put gravy on it and you completely spoil it. I don’t even like chips with any kind of sauce-covered dish and when I have chips I just like to dip them in ketchup as I eat.

MoanasTummy · 03/04/2025 14:12

Used to have soup and chips as kids. Heinz vegetable and homemade chips. Delicious but not as delicious as chips and gravy. 😋

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 03/04/2025 14:13

Gravy chip onions and mushrooms
Curry Chip onions and mushrooms
Spice bag chips (salt and chilli)

DS loves cheesy beanoo chips (not for me).

Dirty chips. Many varieties. Our favourite is chips, pepper sauce with cut up chicken goujons.

Ah sorry! I do love real gravy!

Laughingdoggo · 03/04/2025 14:18

I found a chippy in Hythe on the south coast, and they do gravy. And it’s Good. The sort that kind of sets after a while. It’s factors like this that push up house prices.

wherearemypastnames · 03/04/2025 14:21

Chips and gravy or chips and curry sauce - I can’t decide which I like best

with real big slightly soggy chips

MilnersGold · 03/04/2025 14:22

Chips cheese and gravy is the Manx national dish and there is a day dedicated to it every year! I'm being completely serious, it's great

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 03/04/2025 14:26

Mmmm cheese chips and gravey! Chippie near me used to do it lovely and now sadly gone downhill a bit:(

Chemenger · 03/04/2025 07:47

I would add Edinburgh chippy sauce to your list. I don’t understand why English people have to have gravy on everything.

Heck yeah, chips from the chippy in Edinburgh have to be with salt and sauce.
None of this salt and vinegar nonsense you get in other areas.

Now, that's the tricky bit. It's not a mega common thing, even in the north. According to Google, it's more a manchester/oldham, spreading to Lancashire thing. (However if you are anywhere nr oldham, be aware of park cake bakeries, they make m&s cakes and have an outlet shop...oh lordy, the bargains!)

And it's rag pudding not raging....although u may be raging if you arrive and they've sold out ha ha

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 03/04/2025 14:28

I live not a million miles from the Holland pie factory and regularly pass it. Also local to me is an annual gravy wrestling competition, we take gravy seriously around here. And pies.

I used have this growing up but own mince never tastes the same as my Grans I tried everything.

gollyimholly · 03/04/2025 14:31

Just curious - what kind of chips? Chunky chipshop chips? Or the French fry type?

I really fancy a poutine now...

IVFmumoftwo · 03/04/2025 14:32

@Chemenger I don't understand why you have to fry everything. 🤷

luna2025 · 03/04/2025 14:34

Chips cheese and gravy. Plus scraps and lots of vinegar
chips and curry sauce
pasty barm - with brown sauce and buttered barm

Edited

Either works but the chip shop ones are best

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 03/04/2025 14:41

The best thing I have ever eaten from a chippy was a battered fish cake in a buttered bread cake from a place in Sheffield. A taste sensation.
