Chips and gravy.

Had this for the first time ever yesterday. Well! My oh my! What a revelation! Beats ketchup and Eve mayo any day of the week. Try it and see if I’m being unreasonable 😋. Also - any more fabulous foody wonders out there I might be missing? What do you knock up when you just want a once in a blue moon self indulgent treat?

Bloody love chips and gravy, has to be thick gravy! Non of this watery nonsense.
Also, chips and curry sauce from the chip shop

Ifailed · 03/04/2025 11:02

Mash and gravy - yes
Boiled spuds and gravy - yes
Roasted spuds and gravy - yes. The thick crusts stops the gravy seeping in.
Chips and gravy - a soggy mess, and the gravy is some packet-based crap not made with meat juices.

Another long term chips and gravy advocate here and I’m a Southerner.

But I will add Tartare sauce in beans to the mix, quite literally.

You've gone wrong.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 03/04/2025 11:05

Chips, a good rich gravy and a healthy handful of grated cheese on top made all melty.

Food of the gods, especially after a little drink 😍

BigDahliaFan · 03/04/2025 11:07

I'd never heard of chips and gravy till I moved to the north from the midlands. And I'm not keen - the gravy makes the chips soggy - though I will countenance gravy with a pie and chips. Though I'd never buy a pie from a chip shop.

ClemmyTine · 03/04/2025 11:10

Even better with a Hollands steak and kidney pudding....a

I'm a northerner living in the south but regularly drove up the M1 to a client in Hull. I can confirm that the North starts at Leicester Forest East as that is the first service station going north where gravy is offered as standard with chips.

Food of the gods. I feel sorry for you OP that you've had such a deprived life up until now.

Don't forget the chip spice then.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 03/04/2025 11:25

DH is a southerner and after 20 years of marriage I finally converted him re chips and gravy. He's an honorary northerner now.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 03/04/2025 11:28

the gravy is some packet-based crap not made with meat juices.

That's the point. God I love Bisto gravy you can stand your spoon up in.

I also like and can make proper gravy when we have fresh meat but always have Bisto with sausages or chips.

I can't eat chip shop chips dry, they get stuck in my oesophagus and prefer them on the soggy side. Has tha nowt moist?

BashfulClam · 03/04/2025 11:35

Chips and gravy is amazing our local Chinese used to do them and they were great. Peppercorn sauce with chips is also one of the best combos out there!

eleanorwish · 03/04/2025 11:42

Now I'm feeling nostalgic for my gran's steak and kidney pie, chips and gravy! I had that every Saturday growing up. Followed by her apple pie with Carnation evaporated milk.

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/04/2025 11:53

We go out for fish, chips and gravy on Boxing Day every year. I love it so much! (Northerner now living in London so my Northern family humour me every Christmas).

I had chips and gravy sitting overlooking the beach in Lytham this past weekend. (Southern friend who was with me refused gravy and looked horrified when I ordered it in the chippy).

For Northerners living ‘darn sarf’, and any Southerners who’ve seen the light, you can get chips and gravy (even fish, chips and gravy!) at Poppies in London. They have a branch in Spitalfields (that I go to - or Deliveroo from) and a branch in Camden. It’s an extortionate £3.99 for a little tub of gravy (unlike the 75p I paid in Lytham at the weekend) but it helps with the withdrawal until you can get back to a proper Northern chippy.

MaltipooMama · 03/04/2025 12:00

Chips and gravy is the BEST (from a West Midlander!) followed by…

Chips and curry sauce
Chips and mayo
Chips and ketchup

And now my pregnant self wants all of the above! 😭

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/04/2025 12:01

the idea of something that is meant to be crispy like a chip, covered in wet sauce makes my tummy turn.
Like the awful thing Canadians eat...

Get the gravy on the side and dip the chips in, so no sogginess!

In that case I'm slightly too Southern still.

Curry sauce absolutely. If it's Chinese style curry sauce, even better!.

What if I don't like the gravy? Good gravy is something to behold. What if it's just a bit of mixed up granules?!

I never thought I'd KFC gravy, but my word, it's quite lovely 🤣

KFC gravy is actually nectar.

A whatnow?

Raging pudding.

So it's the soft yet thick suet pastry of a steak and kidney pudding, flat and rectangular shape, steamed (traditionally in a rag) , similar filling of steak but no kidney.

Once cut, like a well made omelette, the insides start oozing out their goodness, to be mopped up with the odd chip or dipped muffin....just a smudge of ketchup, and voila....chefs kiss 💋

BatchCookBabe · 03/04/2025 12:57

I'm not a fan but DH loves it. I suppose you have gravy with potatoes/mash, and chips are just potatoes.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 03/04/2025 12:58

All of my favourite childhood meals involved carrots, chips and gravy! I am a northerner, so my blood is 50% gravy.

Needless to say, when I briefly lived "down south", I was amazed to find supermarkets that didn't sell gravy. I mean, in the north, there are aisles full of gravy! Eventually, I found it in a dark corner of a tiny Co-Op, so I felt like I was buying an illicit product!

I remember a school trip to Deep Down South. On peering into a chip shop, we were all going, "Where is the gravy, and what on earth are mushy pea fritters?!"

Try rag pudding (a Lancashire/Yorkshire thing, involving suet, minced beef, onions and gravy), chips and more gravy. It's amazing!

BatchCookBabe · 03/04/2025 12:58

Oh, beans and egg toasties (made with a Breville snack sandwich toaster!) 😍

Mistyglade · 03/04/2025 12:59

Southern fairy here.

I find the very thought absolutely disgusting!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 03/04/2025 12:11

KFC gravy is actually nectar.

KFC gravy is literally the sludge at the bottom of the fryers. Saw it on telly.

MoodEnhancer · 03/04/2025 13:00

When I was at a Northern Uni in the 90s, the uni canteen would do chips and gravy for 65p. It was a very frequent and loved dinner of mine!

JustWalkingTheDogs · 03/04/2025 13:02

Chips, grated cheese with gravy on top

cloudydays2 · 03/04/2025 13:08

Chips and beef stew gravy with onions through gravy...delicious!
