Had this for the first time ever yesterday. Well! My oh my! What a revelation! Beats ketchup and Eve mayo any day of the week. Try it and see if I’m being unreasonable 😋. Also - any more fabulous foody wonders out there I might be missing? What do you knock up when you just want a once in a blue moon self indulgent treat?

Chips and sweet n sour sauce was a standard Sunday dinner when I was a student.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/04/2025 10:06

The best chips and gravy I’ve ever had was at the cafe at Barter Books in Alnwick.
Agreed!

I've never understood how people have not had chips and gravy.

Boggles my mind. If one makes a pie, and chips, there will definitely be gravy involved.

How have individuals in the UK got to voting age with never experiencing this combination?

This!!

xILikeJamx · 03/04/2025 10:09

I do like chips and gravy, but chips and cheese in a roll / bun / bap / softie / whatever you call it (let's not start that argument) is the ultimate post night out filler upper!

Chips and curry sauce?

But only from a Chinese takeaway, chip shop curry sauce, is not nice usually

Cannaeberught · 03/04/2025 10:22

Standard where I come from and absolutely fucking lush! The food of the gods.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/04/2025 10:24

Yuk, yuk, yuk. We have our favourite place where the chips are cooked to soft, fluffy inner, roughed up crispy edged perfection, like mini roast potatoes. Why would I ruin that perfection by dunking them and making them soggy?

Missey85 · 03/04/2025 10:26

Chips and gravy is the best ❤️ put some grated cheese on top and you have Poutine 🤤

Differentstarts · 03/04/2025 10:30

Chips cheese and gravy for the win. The gravy has ti be really thick

3678194b · 03/04/2025 10:32

This definitely was about the only thing we would eat at the high school canteen in the 90's.

DCs now don't seem to have it. Maybe it's not allowed in school anymore!

Fish and gravy is all kinds of wrong 🤢

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 03/04/2025 10:03

YABU to suggest people try it.

You are the last person in the nation to have done so!!

She's not, I've never had chips with gravy! But sorely tempted to do so after reading this thread...

Fish and chips with gravy is the food of the gods.

Chips and gravy I get but fish and gravy. Really?

@PrancerandDancerI had steak pudding last night…I buy 4-packs of Hollands Steak Puddings for my freezer. Our local chippy doesn’t sell them…which is of course outrageous 😬

wtf - it should have its status as a chippy revoked.

GasPanic · 03/04/2025 10:37

Chips and gravy is awful.

The best thing about chips is the slightly crunchy outside and fluffy inside.

Putting them in gravy just makes them go soggy.

You wouldn't soak your crisps in water because it makes them soggy, so why put gravy on chips ?

If you want gravy and potatoes gravy and mashed potatoes is better and more sensible and doesn't waste the crunchiness and taste of the fat.

edwinbear · 03/04/2025 10:39

Poutine takes it to another level. Unfortunately I have never been able to find poutine as good as the stuff in Canadian ski resorts - and since we had DC, we can no longer afford to go to Canadian ski resorts.

MaleficentQueen · 03/04/2025 10:44

Has to be Chip Shop Chips & Gravy.
It’s not as good with Oven Chips.

ginasevern · 03/04/2025 10:45

The first time I encountered chips and gravy was on a holiday "up north" in the mid 80's. I'm from the West Country and at that time chip shops down here didn't sell gravy and nobody I knew would've dreamt of puting chips and gravy together. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I encountered mushy peas too. Anyway, we went into a chip shop in Lancaster (I think) and the server asked if I wanted gravy with my chips. I laughed because I thought he was joking. He really wasn't.

CloudPop · 03/04/2025 10:48

Chips with Worcestershire sauce. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Brefugee · 03/04/2025 10:49

have not RTFT. I am possibly the sole northerner who loathes chips & gravy. Chips and any type of hot sauce, in fact. Urgh.

RaininSummer · 03/04/2025 10:49

Doesn't it make the chips go soggy though. Never fancied it for this reason.

baileys6904 · 03/04/2025 10:49

Chips, gravy, bit of ketchup and add a rag pudding. You'll not look back ;)

Yes i love fish and gravy when it soaks into the batter😋

Filler44 · 03/04/2025 10:58

Another long term chips and gravy advocate here and I’m a Southerner.

But I will add Tartare sauce in beans to the mix, quite literally.
