Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

OK, thought there may have been more support for mothers day on MUMSnet but I guess I misjudged!

Thanks anyway I guess.

Oh please. You decided to dog whistle about Lent/Eid and didn't get the reception you wanted. So you've pivoted to "respecting mothers" and people have called you out on being inconsistent.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 31/03/2025 00:28

Maybe some kind of general acknowledgement of the bloody hard graft we put in to raising the next generation? Reflecting for a little while maybe on those mothers we've loved and lost? I'm sure they could have come up with something.

I think he's not a great friend to women and it just would have been nice to see something along those lines.

Hope that explains it to everyone wondering.

What on earth makes you think he’s not a great friend to women?

Personally I can’t stand the man, but I can’t in all honesty say he’s not a friend of women. I also can’t see why he needs to post about this at all, although as it’s been pointed out he/his comms team did put a SM post up anyway.

Presumably he did his own private family recognition of the day. Isn’t that what it’s all about.

Negroany · 31/03/2025 00:54

Livelovebehappy · 31/03/2025 00:20

Not sure it’s a case of wishing anyone ‘Happy Mothers Day’, but some people might have thought he’d reference it in a ‘hope all mothers are being spoilt by their loved ones’ kind of way. After all, the majority of florists, and most restaurants, are making a huge amount of money today, so it’s a pretty big day for a lot of women. Btw, I personally couldn’t care less myself whether he references Mothers Day or not. I think he’s a twat whether he refers to it or whether he doesn’t..🤷‍♀️

So you think he should be saying "happy busy day for businesses" then?

I don't need the PM to "reflect" on my dead mum. I'd rather he spent time with his own family when away from work and focusing on work when he's there.

There is support for Mothers Day on this forum. Just not seeing the need for our government to actually acknowledge it in the form of mass social media comments.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 31/03/2025 00:23

Oh absolutely can't fault the fact he's got comms out about those other issues.

It felt like an omission because, well it was!

You've all told me he mentioned it on all the other platforms. So why not X?

I know his staff post things for him there - but twitter is a cesspit owned by a ketamine addict who flirts with neo-fascism.

There are things to reasonably criticise him for - but expecting this is just daft.

ilovesooty · 31/03/2025 01:00

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 31/03/2025 00:01

Yeh he did not post it to all platforms though. He could have done a text only one for X and it would have saved a lot of gnashing 😄

Who's gnashing apart from the likes of you?

Ecocool · 31/03/2025 01:09

He doesn't need to mention Mother's day however he should certainly not mention Eid. We are a christian country. He will never mention any other bloody religion will he. He is a disgrace and I think he is trolling us.

dogsandcatsandhorses · 31/03/2025 01:17

He totally ignored my birthday last month too.
AND he never sent me a condolence card when my cat died. Bloody unforgivable. I mean ffs he’s only running a country, the man needs to get a grip.

FullOfLemons · 31/03/2025 01:25

There is clearly no place for Mums in his socialist utopia. He thinks children should separated from parents at birth and raised in an ideologically pure environment by social workers from Camden Council.

What utter bollocks

ToWhitToWhoo · 31/03/2025 01:39

While I have quite a few genuine disappointments in Starmer and his government (the Winter Fuel Allowance cuts; the increase in employers' NI contributions; the cuts in PIP; the foreign aid cuts), this complaint is ridiculous, Why does he need to wish anyone but his wife and (late) mother a happy Mothers' Day. None of us is his mother or the mother of his children! And why would you expect him to mention Lent? 'Happy Easter' perhaps, bur that's not for a while!

ToWhitToWhoo · 31/03/2025 01:48

Why can't he mention Eid or indeed any occasion if he wants to? He hasn't got to (he's running a government, not a calendar of holidays) but why shouldn't he if he chooses? I am sure he'll mention Easter and Christmas, which are frankly the only such occasions that most nominal Christians in the UK do celebrate. And he's not a Christian anyway; he's agnostic/atheist and his wife and kids are Jewish. Rishi Sunak was Hindu and celebrated Diwali - do you object to that? The King is the head of the C of E, so it's his job, not the Prime Minister's, to acknowledge Christian occasions.

My condolences. Are you ok? Can we help at all?

NattyTurtle59 · 31/03/2025 01:58

Why on earth should he mention it - what has mothers day got to do with the government???

NoBinturongsHereMate · 31/03/2025 02:10

You're not his mother. People don't go around wishing all and sundry happy mother's day - they say it to their mother. Nor do people go around wishing all their friends and colleagues a happy Lent. People do say happy Christmas or Eid mubarak as a general greeting.

They are totally different types of events, and greeting traditions.

Personally I'd be entirely unbothered if the PM mentioned none of them - it's not part of his job. But as swathes of the populace seem to demand it for some reason, it's entirely proper to stick to the big celebratory or commemorative events that have communal social greetings - the way you might wish a stranger a happy new year. If the PM did all possible religious or cultural occasions he (or his comms team) would get nothing else done.

And where would you stop? I don't see you complaining about the lack of a message for St Quirinus's day, his failure to acknowledge Pretzel Sunday, or the fact he didn't wish us all a pleasant Take a Walk in the Park day. All of which were also on 30 March.

I don’t need the PM to mention Mother’s Day. I expect that from my sons. I’d like the PM to focus on his job, like most sensible people.

First post says it perfectly!

ffs.

LillyPJ · 31/03/2025 02:56

I hope he's got far more important things to focus on than some commercial money-making event (or a date on a religious calendar). I don't think it's part of a PM's job.

nomas · 31/03/2025 06:16

Imagine the apoplectic rage when Eid coincides with Christmas Day 🤣

The only person ‘gnashing’ is you!

Thank fuck this is an anonymous forum, because you’re making such a twat of yourself it’s embarrassing!

Instead of getting upset by things that aren't true and aren't important concentrate on things that make the world a better place. Maybe be part of making the world a better place. You will be happier and live longer.

Why shouldn't he mention a religious festival celebrated by millions in the UK?

Should he also "certainly not" mention Diwali, Hanukkah, or the many other festivals celebrated by people living and voting in the UK? Because I think his account did that too and continues to do so. Were you outraged then?

The PM's office marks all the major religious festivals.
