Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

YANBU. He's a disgrace. He's trolling us now. I think he's trying to stir up trouble in the UK.

I assume you're being ironic here and not just being an idiot?

SeriaMau · 31/03/2025 10:32

I bet both Churchill and Thatcher posted happy Mother’s Day on their insta accounts. How things have changed. It’s a disgrace.

BIWI · 31/03/2025 10:32

Addressing the point? Which point would you like me to address?!

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 31/03/2025 10:33

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/03/2025 10:30

Why on earth wouldn't I be serious? Try addressing the point if you can instead of casting aspersions.

Maybe try asking this question over on the FWR board instead of trying to make this thread more crackers than it already is.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/03/2025 10:33

By the way, for everyone chuntering about all the special important things Starmer has to focus on that somehow don't have to stop him posting about Fathers' Day, Starmer is spending today on the vital business of chatting about some telly programme at a round table meeting.

Janiie · 31/03/2025 10:33

BIWI · 31/03/2025 10:28

Tell us you’re trolling the thread without telling us you’re trolling the thread Grin
… because you cannot be serious.

Mind you, we also have @Janiie trying to align a massively commercial marketer’s delight with a religious event, which is as equally bonkers.

I'm sure all religious events are also a massive commercial marketers delight?

I am trying to align something, true. If you are a pm or in his comms teams and bother to post on X then you post about all other important events too. Even those that are aimed at women.

5128gap · 31/03/2025 10:33

Really? He got me a scented candle and a basket of spring bulbs then took me for a potter around Dobbies and a cream tea in their cafe. I take it you're not a party member OP?

Double standards maybe?

Yes this thread is crackers. But not necessarily the OP.

GCAcademic · 31/03/2025 10:36

Janiie · 31/03/2025 10:11

No. I mean tbh I do think a pm and his comms team should have more important things to do than tweet but if they're going to bother they should be consistent and inclusive.

I agree. He didn't post about Eid on Instagram at all. He only mentioned Mothers' Day. That's not very inclusive of him at all. I'm outraged, actually.

RainingRoses · 31/03/2025 10:38

Janiie · 31/03/2025 09:22

If he is bothering post on Twitter/X about important events for people then yes, he needs to be consistent.

Mother's Day is not equal to Valentines day. One is celebrating women.

No. Mother’s Day celebrates mothers. Not all women are mothers.

International Women’s Day celebrates women. And the PM posted about IWD. So what’s the issue?

Mother's Day is personal, though.
(For those complaining about Fathers Day too, so is that.)
I'd not want to put anything personal about my family on Twitter either, as the amount of shit comments/abuse you get under articles/totally innocuous, innocent posts about "happy mother's day to my mum/wife etc" either.
Underneath would be filled with people shouting"WHAT ABOUT THE BOATS THO?!
or worse.
Why would you want to invite all that crap underneath an acknowledgement to your mum?!

Fair pont, so I've had a look at the post. He's been shredded on insta too.

Thedogscollar · 31/03/2025 10:48

@DangerQuakeRhinoSnake If you want to be pissed off with someone try the weasel that is Justin Welby saying he would forgive the prolific child sex offender if he was still alive.
Now that is sickening.

People are upset about the PM not mentioning Lent? Seriously? Some Christian denominations don't even practice Lent (I know mine doesn't.) Obviously individual members can if they wish, and some people who give up whatever for Lent aren't Christians, they just do it for themselves. (After my ex-H told me about his cousin who gave up chocolate for Lent and then became allergic to it I decided I wasn't going to risk it!)

Over40Overdating · 31/03/2025 10:59

If that’s your biggest worry about what this government are doing or not doing, may I suggest you count your blessings, and get a life? Not necessarily in that order.

beAsensible1 · 31/03/2025 11:01

LavenderBlue19 · 30/03/2025 23:22

I really don't think it's Keir Starmer himself writing the tweets 🙄

People are looking to be offended - I bet this was hyped up by a Reform-affiliated account. Mother's Day is a personal, family thing, it's nothing to do with the Prime Minister. Ramadan is more of a cultural thing, the same as he would wish people Happy Christmas.

And what's Lent got to do with anything?

it is some sort of reform bot comms push.

loads of "people" complaining that the didn't wish a "happy lent" when that is not a thing, because he wished a happy eid. when he will obviously wish a happy easter.

he also did happy Hanukah. everyone needs to get a grip.

Eskarina1 · 31/03/2025 11:01

MrsSunshine2b · 31/03/2025 10:25

What do you mean by "Lent"? Would you like him to post 40 times to confirm it's still Lent?

Having celebrated lent throughout my childhood, I'm sure if Maggie Thatcher had acknowledged my hardship in not eating sweets for a month I'd have felt much better.

Still she wasn't recognising the single most important day in the calendar for millions of British people either so I guess I can't be offended.

Eskarina1 · 31/03/2025 11:19

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/03/2025 10:24

Has anyone saying that Starmer has more important things to do than post on twitter about Mothers' Day said the same about his twitter posts for Ramadan, Eid or Fathers' Day? There's a lot to be unpacked from that, not least it being somehow seen as acceptable to minimise and show contempt for traditions concerning mothers.

Let's unpack why we think a commercial holiday telling us that we deserve a lie in once a year for carrying the mental load all year round is an important, women affirming holiday. At its best, it's a day for individuals to celebrate their mother/mother figures and an excuse to have family time. From a religious perspective, it's a break from the boredom of lent food and a time to reconnect with your roots. At it's worst, it's misogynistic and reinforces stereotypes about the role of mothers and our desire for flowers. Mostly, it's just an excuse to sell things.

Comtesse · 31/03/2025 10:08

Seriously? Have you completely lost your sense of proportion?

I don't think some have a sense of proportion to begin with tbh.

JassyRadlett · 31/03/2025 11:23

"AIBU to be devastated and have my day ruined because the Prime Minister didn't wish me a happy Mother's Day on my social media platform of choice" is pretty barrel-scraping, even for MN around Mother's Day.
