Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

Why on earth should he mention Mother’s Day? Or Lent? What next, The Easter Bunny? Nothing to do with politics or running the country.

Yes one would expect the PM to mention Easter. Not the Easter Bunny, no.

Look. If he's going to use X then he must be inclusive and consistent that is all.

Can't you just say "oops I was wrong, he has posted on social media" instead of continuing, despite being wrong, and making yourself look silly and like you've got some kind of axe to grind against him?

This ⬆️

Because it is an important date for many. Didn't you know?

There have been loads of posts on here about disappointing Mother's Days where husbands and kids have forgotten and arranged nothing, or the OP spends the day waiting on her toxic MIL, or from Mumsnetters who are estranged from their mums.

Who the fuck would be genuinely upset because Keir Starmer didn't wish them Happy Mother's Day? An utter twat, that's who. As previous posters have said, the only Prime Ministers that have previously posted about Mother's Day were Liz Truss and Boris in the context of the pandemic.

Janiie · 31/03/2025 09:32

PinkFrogss · 31/03/2025 09:30

Well no, it’s a marketing gimmick celebrating mothers. Not all women are mothers. Didn’t you know?

But all mothers are women.

It is far more than a marketing gimmick for many.

SallyWD · 31/03/2025 09:32

Janiie · 31/03/2025 09:29

It has evolved to become a celebration of Mothers. Or do you buy flowers and chocolates for the mother church?

Yep and he posted about it. Just not on X. He also did a very good post for International Women's Day. Perhaps people need to focus on the real issues like KS and other prime ministers are doing.

ExtraOnions · 31/03/2025 09:35

The Prime Minister says “Happy Eid” because he is a global leader, and is saying it to communities and governments around the world.

Little Englanders are so isolationist, they seem to think he shouod only be posting to people in the UK.

Janiie · 31/03/2025 09:36

'There have been loads of posts on here about disappointing Mother's Days where husbands and kids have forgotten and arranged nothing, or the OP spends the day waiting on her toxic MIL, or from Mumsnetters who are estranged from their mums.'

We seee loads of posts on here about disappointing Christmases, birthdays, weddings and holidays. I'm not sure what your point is.

If he posts on X then he should recognise all important events on that day.

Inclusivity, it shouldn't need pointing out to our pm.

MammaTo · 31/03/2025 09:36

Save this kind of shit for the feminism/gender critical board. In the real world we like to deal with real issues, not whether the PM has wished people a happy Mother’s Day on X.

Am looking for the other thread but at 10am I would definitely have given it a bit longer before wondering (or posting)!

If he's not going to do Twitter properly he should probably leave. What could be the aim of feeding different platforms different content?

I'm cringeing on your behalf.

Leave the social media to the professionals, dear.

That's what some posters don't understand. Starmer is dealing with global issues, not just what happens in Luton.

Dramatic · 31/03/2025 09:40

Who the hell cares 🙄

Whatafustercluck · 31/03/2025 09:40

People really do search endlessly for things to be outraged about when it comes to the current PM. I suppose he could always follow a previous PM's example and father multiple children by different mothers and have an affair with another woman while his wife is battling cancer. You'd no doubt forgive him as long as he outwardly professed to respect women by ensuring he posted about Mother's Day on all available social media channels. Would that be better, op? Good grief. Agree with his policies or not, he at least takes the business of UK PM seriously, rather than sharing endless meaningless platitudes. I'd much rather he focuses on, y'know, trade deals to protect our economy, sorting out the NHS and this country's security.

Most of the events he posts about are internationally recognised days. Mothers Day is UK/Ireland only I think.
Of course, he can acknowledge it and he did. On Instagram.

What other days do you think he should recognise so I can watch out for them?

When I read the initial post, it does strike me that there are a lot of idiots on Mumsnet.

It's not that everyone on Mumsnet is an idiot, far from it, but every idiot seems to be starting threads on Mumsnet.

Presented without comment.

It’s very similar to his Mothers’ Day post. Excellent.

Do you know what he's doing at this very moment, @Janiie ?
Addressing the Immigration Crime Summit and raising questions about trafficking gangs.
I think he's got other things to deal with other than making sure he sent out a message on X as well on Instagram.
Priorities.

Yet he had nothing better to do than post about Eid and you're not complaining about that.

I have what is no doubt an unpopular view to everyone that the UK PM shouldn't be posting about religion at all. However, if the office-holder really, really feels the need to do so, it's not unreasonable to expect those posts to be restricted to events observed by official UK churches like CofE or Scotland. The UK PM should certainly not be taking part in Ramadan breakfasts.

Anyway, as far as the OP goes, if the current holder of office can find the time to tweet about what is definitely the recently made-up Fathers' Day, he should certainly have bothered to mark the established tradition of Mothers' Day. Starmer isn't a mother though of course, and there's a distinct problem with the current Labour Party that the individuals involved appear completely unable to understand any experience outside their own.

Isn’t Lent on a level with Ramadan, though? If he tweeted about one he should tweet about the other. Mother’s Day has its origins in Lent.

He didn’t tweet about Ramadan. He tweeted about Eid.

thinktwice36 · 31/03/2025 09:46

I'm not his mother so I don't need to hear that from him?

newnamesix · 31/03/2025 09:46

Having now looked at Starmer's IG feed for the first time ever, I really like this rug. He really should have put up a shopping link

EasternEcho · 31/03/2025 09:47

The equivalent of wishing for Eid would be wishing for Easter. Not Lent. Lent is not a festive occasion. Don't see why he would have to wish everyone for Mothers' day.
