Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 30/03/2025 23:12

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

I don’t need the PM to mention Mother’s Day. I expect that from my sons. I’d like the PM to focus on his job, like most sensible people.

If he's going to post about ramadan and wishing folk eid mubarik on X he should also mention Mother's Day on X. It isn't rocket science.

WhatAPrettyHouse · 31/03/2025 08:56

Allswellthatendswelll · 31/03/2025 08:51

It was Eid which is as important as Christmas for Muslims. They acknowledge all the big festivals- Diwali, Hannukah etc. Only Eid seems to rile people up though!

Because every time someone says Happy Eid on social media a Christmas fairy dies.

OP. My employer stopped posting on Twitter around six months ago. Because of the vile racism, prejudice and unpleasant views displayed and encouraged uncensored on there. It attracts a certain kind of poster, don’t you think?

Maybe that’s why the PM is not choosing to post there. If that is the case, I am supportive.

This is nothing to do with KS dismissing Mothers Day. Stop your silliness.

He is posting there, or his inept comms team are posting there. Just not very inclusively.

IsoldeWagner · 31/03/2025 08:55

Why not mention it? It's a significant and special time for many people. Acknowledging it won't do any harm. Quite the opposite.

Exactly. But forget about all those pesky women, many bringing up the next generation single handedly. Let's say happy ramadan instead.

Because it is an important date for many. Didn't you know?

Eh? Who is forgetting women?
I've managed to say Ramandan Mubarak and Happy Mother's Day.
Oh, and I also wished my neighbours Happy Diwali.

Evaka · 31/03/2025 09:02

This is the maddest thing I've seen on here. U OK hun?

We are talking about KS. Who posted about eid on X but not Mother's Day. Not very inclusive is it.

IsoldeWagner · 31/03/2025 09:03

Also, @Janiie - when I wished my colleague Eid Mubarak yesterday, do you know what she replied:
"Happy Mother's Day and Happy Easter".

Someone has just linked that he did so on Instagram.
What on earth is the problem? I don't get it.

That's why he mentioned it.

Bestfootforward11 · 31/03/2025 09:05

Can’t say it occurred to me even if think if K Starmer had said anything about Mother’s Day!

Am looking for the other thread but at 10am I would definitely have given it a bit longer before wondering (or posting)!

If he's not going to do Twitter properly he should probably leave. What could be the aim of feeding different platforms different content?

I don't like the man, but this is ridiculous. Really ridiculous.

That is lovely however we are talking about KS, who didn't. If you are the PM posting about events that people mark on X then he should have some common sense.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 31/03/2025 00:37

OK, thought there may have been more support for mothers day on MUMSnet but I guess I misjudged!

Thanks anyway I guess.

Oh dear!

I'm actually surprised that anyone gives a shiny shite what Keir Starmer or any other Prime Minister says or does about such piffle as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents' Day etc.

If they mention it or acknowledge it fine. If they don't then absolutely no big deal at all.

Before you ask, I am not a defender of any politicians. I am the mother of three adult DDs. These occasions are something for families to acknowledge amongst themselves if they wish to.

Do people really go seeking tweets from Prime Ministers and other politicians about this!?

Yes he did. Someone upthread linked his Instagram page.

I agree, I mean I'm not a political expert or anything but I think I'd rather he was running the country than trying to be some SM influencer.
Sure there's plenty to slate him for, for the way he's doing that job rather than what he does or doesn't post on SM. 🤷🏼‍♀️

He doesn't need to mention Mother's day however he should certainly not mention Eid. We are a christian country. He will never mention any other bloody religion will he. He is a disgrace and I think he is trolling us.

He does mention Christian holidays:

Eid is as significant for Muslims as Christmas is for Christians. Why shouldn't he mention it? Less than 50% of people in the UK identify as Christian. The OP's post is a racist dogwhistle.

X is certainly not the platform for celebrating women. He did well to avoid. The thick misogynist trolls puppeted by Musk would certainly have been posting vile abuse if he'd posted that picture of his wife and mother on there.

I'd lose all respect for him if he tweeted "hope all mothers are being spoilt by their loved ones". He's the PM not a PR rep for a chain of pubs.

Why would he say that?!

What he should have said on the same platform that he wished a happy eid is something like wishing a lovely, happy day to all the Mothers and a peaceful day for those missing their Mums this year.

It isnt about a 'chain of pubs' it about recognising the worth and value of women, I'm surprised so many on here are happy to be brushed under the carpet by our pm.

Racists out in force on this thread.

Exactly. And shame on MN allowing it to stand. Though it is useful to see who the racists are...
