Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

OP posts:
Jesslikesjam · 31/03/2025 06:13

Literally never owned a pair of white trainers, tell a lie we had to wear them in the school gym

Op said, "My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”"

Can you really imagine a younger colleague telling an older male, "You can't wear those chinos and brown shoes anymore - they're out" Different standards.

Obviously mens fashions do change, but more slowly.

I can’t imagine my colleagues saying their look is out to anyone. It’s so rude.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 31/03/2025 06:35

Oh no! Someone on TikTok who I'll never meet has decreed that white dresses and trainers are no longer acceptable! However will I cope?!

Meanwhile, back in the real world...

exLtEveDallas · 31/03/2025 07:08

DD tells me that colourful Jordan's are back in and has been trying to persuade me to buy a pair ("Sage green would be best on you mum, if you go for the cream or rose you'll look older")

I just go, uh huh, and continue to wear what is comfortable (although I have to admit, I really do like the sage!)

Hate floral with a passion, especially as it seems to be the go to look for all plus size wear, like "it's ok, she's fat, she'll love flowers, they all do"

What I find funny is that people on this thread say they don’t care about trends but still wear a trend from a few years ago - floral dress and white trainers. Nobody was wearing that combo ten years ago! So you do care about trends, just not in a super up-to-date fashion sense…

It’s not about following a trend, it’s about buying clothes that are available in the shops/online, that you like and that suit you.

I certainly won’t be following the current trend of everything looking like an oversized sack, completely shapeless massive dresses and dungarees, no thanks!

Manchesterbythesea · 31/03/2025 07:13

I would normally say just wear whatever you like (and please do if you like) but I saw someone in the floral dress and trainers on tv over the weekend and I immediately thought that trend had definitely passed!

You lot all waste so much of your lives judging other people's clothes.

MumWifeOther · 30/03/2025 22:48

Respectfully, I don’t think anyone young ever wore this look. My mum is really the only person I know (late 50s) who wore this.

That being said, if the OP is happy in this outfit, then she should definitely not stop!

Respectfully yes they did. I worked in a fashion office with dozens of young 20 somethings and it was worn albeit a long long time ago. Circa 2016 2017

Rewis · 31/03/2025 07:21

Things that are "in" are more available. They are shown to you and younstsrt thinking about them. You notice people around you wearing something and then you decide if you like it. No average perksn is wearing things they hate and feel terrible in just cause it is in style.

Something being "in" makes is socially acceptable. There waa a point where wearing trainers with formal wear was a big nono. Now that it's everywhere (and therefore "in") it is socially acceptable to do that.

I'm not particularly fashionable person. I never really liked long summer dresses but once they were everywhere I decided to give it a try and liked them. Am I going to throw away my white sneakers now that theye out? Of course not. But maybe with the new trend I notice something I like. I'm still wearing my skinny jeans like I have since I was 15. But doesn't mean I can't consider alternatives as they come to shops

Saw someone in this outfit today what with it being fairly warm and thought it just looked so tired. Was boring last year but seeing it again today made me roll my eyes.

By all means wear what you’re comfy in but vary it a little, so dull seeing groups of women in this uniform, really lacks imagination especially when it’s the cross body bag and denim jacket too. Yawn.

Why on earth does someone else’s clothing choices cause you to roll your eyes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Absolutely didn’t mean to be bitchy.

If you live your life governed by trends so be it but others don't care.

Heaven forbid that you should be bored when looking at how other women dress, whatever next?! I’m sure you are just the epitome of the latest trend aren’t you? I bet you wear those ridiculous white socks that stop mid calf over black leggings 😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/03/2025 07:43

Well and truly out (for now). So if you like to keep your look fresh maybe give this look a miss for now. If you don’t give AF then crack on, lol, if it suits you.

I don't know, I tend to think that the women making an effort to follow fashion often look more like they're wearing a uniform.

Like, last year, leopard print was everywhere and it was like, "Oh, all these women read in Vogue that leopard print is in this year, and went out and bought leopard print stuff."

To me, that's a uniform, because the fashion industry is telling you what to wear and you're wearing it.

And don't even get me started on trends like wearing socks with high heeled sandals. Mind you, that's a trend that won't have time to date because most women who try it will wear it three times, whilst knowing deep down that they look ridiculous, and then stop and dig out the leopard print instead.

Langdale3 · 31/03/2025 07:46

redshoesredlaces · 30/03/2025 21:20

its not an age thing. It’s a fashion thing. No one has to follow trends but some people enjoy looking on trend. Others don’t mind looking dated.

Isn’t it a woman thing? Following trends wastes more of our time, money and the earth’s resources. The textile industry is now worse environmentally than the global aviation industry.

Mens fashion moves much more slowly. They can buy trousers and be quite confident that they will be on trend until they wear out or they otherwise make a decision to be rid of them. They can just get on with building their career, downtime, whatever.

Veja trainers have been out for around 4 years in London.

Sorry I'm not trying to be rude.

I'd say white trainers are out however there are exceptions like Reebok C85's.

Clogs are in for women, in a big way.

Oh no, I’m going to London today and it appears I don’t have the appropriate footwear 😳 will they actually let me in? Do they have emergency pairs of Reebok C85’s(?) or clogs (clogs!!) that I can borrow in order to not cause anyone to roll their eyes at my outfit?

I agree.

If it's in the shops this season, surely it's fashionable?
Unless you want to look outrageous and wear something perhaps that teenagers wear and will be out of 'fashion' in 2 months?

I buy my clothes from Boden (plain stuff), Nobody's Child, Mint Velvet, The White Company, J Lewis /Any Day, Whistles....

Considering they all have dresses(some that are floral ) how can they be out of fashion this season?

CertainUncertain · 31/03/2025 08:10

TheFairyCaravan · 30/03/2025 23:01

I shall be wearing my Summer dresses, some of them floral with my trainers. I’ve got Vejas, dark green Sambas, pastel coloured Gazelles, and DH has just bought me some Liberty London Sambas which I love. I appreciate they’re not for everyone, but they’re for me and they’ll be on my feet with some plain skirts, dresses, trousers and jeans.

Summer clothes hardly ever get worn, ime, so I’m absolutely not throwing things out just because they might not be at the height of fashion anymore.

Which of the Liberty Sambas did you get? I'm definitely getting a pair, but can't decide on which pattern.

@AelinAG I've just bought these too!

sesquipedalian · 30/03/2025 20:23

My DS who keeps up with this sort of thing assures me that you can wear any trainers you like so long as they aren’t white. The white trainer is apparently out!

Argh no, I finally treated myself to some Vejas for my 50th and now I'm going to look out :( Mind you they are so pretty and pristine they should probably just stay in the box anyway where I can just admire them.

Worldgonecrazy · 31/03/2025 08:17

I am glad to hear ballet flats are making a comeback. I have a very tiny frame and my ankles /legs look ridiculous in clunky sandals, so have been out of vogue for a few years. Ditto flappy jeans, which just swamp me.

TwistedWonder · 31/03/2025 08:19

I’m almost 60 and my staple wardrobe is midi dresses and matching trainers - never white

Ive got about 30 pairs of gazelles in different colours - could not give a rats arse if it’s fashionable, I'm too old to care.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 31/03/2025 08:32

Cheer up OP.

I'm a complete style hermit, but not so anymore. My garish leopard print wardrobe is suddenly tres chic, and EVERYWHERE. It only took the rest of the world a few years to catch up.

I'm clearly hugely stylish, who knew.
