Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

OP posts:
Justa60sRockChick · 31/03/2025 08:33

so are we supposed to throw away white trainers? They are a year old.

I've some white new balance trainers and 2 pairs of white 'trainers' - they're plain leather lace ups with a chunky sole but don't look like a sporty trainers.

I will keep on wearing them all summer.

I'm not taking notice of some random person on social media telling me they are 'out'.

Women need to stop being so gullible to marketing and so called 'influencers'.

Fagli · 31/03/2025 08:41

Some people like fashion, what’s wrong with that? You don’t need to call them sad or gullible. People like different things, it’s not that hard to understand. Surely those who don’t care about fashion won’t be offended that the clothes they wear are not in fashion, that would defeat the object of not caring!

TheatreTraveller · 31/03/2025 08:53

redshoesredlaces · 30/03/2025 21:17

Of course people can wear what they want. But some people like to be a little more on trend. Others don’t mind wearing outdated clothes that are still serviceable

Outdated clothes? Seriously?
Or maybe some women are just confident enough to wear what they like and what suits them and don't need someone else to tell them what to wear.

Unpaidviewer · 31/03/2025 09:00

I started dressing for my shape and skin tone years ago and I've never looked back. I wear trousers I've owned for 10 years and buy lots of vintage bits. No fast fashion, and more good quality clothes.

We often visit national trust houses and gardens with our toddler and loads of ladies wear the trainers, floral dresses and denim jacket combos. I think they look lovely and comfortable.

All the young people near us wear sportswear or late 90s fashion. I've already done the cargo pants, strappy vest tops and airmax look, i would feel like i was cosplaying as my teenage self in that get up.

fratellia · 31/03/2025 09:03

I can tell some things are ‘outdated’ (eg the classic millennial type outfits discussed) but there’s no way I could date a look as being two or three years out of date, I find it fascinating that people can consistently say a particular brand/colour/style of trainer was in last year but now out.

fratellia · 31/03/2025 09:04

*confidently not consistently

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/03/2025 09:04

The thing that’s so silly about these threads is that everyone uses a different barometer for what is ‘in’ and ‘fresh’. Some people look at, ‘What the young people are wearing’, some go with, ‘Well if they’re selling it in Whistles’ and some only want to know if it’s been shown on the catwalk in Paris. There is no single definitive measure of ‘fashion’ anymore and hasn’t been for decades.

Sambas? Sunak wore them, so some people would now view them as naff

Leggings and white socks? Many would view it as boring/silly/lazy/whatever

Young people? I’m in Manchester at the moment and most of the young girls are wearing huge, shiny boots with bare legs and either tiny black tennis skirts or sequin hot pants so small they’re effectively knickers. I can’t see that working for me at work or in Sainsbury’s.

The truth, as I see it, is that many ordinary people shape their wardrobes around what’s available to them in Next, M&S, the supermarket, choosing what works for their lifestyle. Or they’ll have a favourite couple of shops and choose from there. Most people now don’t change their entire look 4 times a year, for fashion.

vandelle · 31/03/2025 09:18

I swear I miss the trends every time, so that I inevitably catch up when it's "out" 😊

I think we all have our own style and that boils down to either wanting or liking to be up to the minute and on trend, or happy in our own look of mix and matching pieces that look right on us.

I often take a walk through Primark or similar shops to see what the young things are wearing now and what's on display. I find it's where a lot of young teens go and if it's not cool, it generally won't be there!

One thing though, I absolutely refuse to wear crew socks unless they are hidden under jeans/trousers. Nope absolutely no. We can refuse to look ridiculous you know!

But then again I'm old and am invisible anyway......

Darkdiamond · 31/03/2025 09:36

Some of these posts are quite offensive. There is an implications that women who like to keep up with most current trends are mindless, stupid saps with zero critical thinking skills. For a start, there are degrees in Fashion Design which, I assume, educate students to degree level in literal fashion. Secondly, many women enjoy using fashion to channel many aspects of their massively diverse and multi faced personalities, and are keen to do it in new and fresh ways. Many women enjoy playing around with shapes, colours and moods and don't want to rehash styles which they have already played around with in the past. Thirdly, most women use current trends to enhance or freshen their existing wardrobe, and do so in a way which is mindful to their body shape and overall style.

This thread is making out that women who enjoy staying up to date on current trends are stupid, easily manipulated and duped by advertising, are brainwashed and cannot think for themselves. I hate the term 'misogyny' being thrown around but gosh, some people have very low expectations for how women make decisions about what they wear.

dottydodah · 31/03/2025 09:41

SparkyBlue I am 5ft 0 in stockinged feet. Like you I love dresses .Winter I bought a £5.00 dress from eBay brand new F and F. Wear it with my black suede boots .Lots of compliments (and am 16/18 dress size) In summer I like white trainers and blue /white dresses .Not changing !

On these ‘what’s in, what’s out’ threads, could we maybe just have one generic ‘wear whatever you like, who gives a fuck about fashion’ post and leave it at that - so those of us who DO care about fashion don’t have to wade through hundreds of them …

You bought a pair of white New Balance trainers, which were all the rage a year or two ago.

Yet it's everyone else who's gullible to marketing and influencers.

80smonster · 31/03/2025 10:18

Urgh. Definitely dead, bury with skinny jeans.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/03/2025 10:25

You need to remember that fashions are invented purely in order to make you feel you need to ditch whatever you’ve got, go out and spend ££££ buying new stuff.

Agreed.
Once a look comes around for the second (or even 3rd) time during your life it starts to feel like ground hog day!

I've seen Skinnys in, skinnys out, skinnys in, currently out, presumably back in 3, 2, 1 ...

I've followed along but you do start to struggle to care.

I've kept the last pair of skinnys i bought and they are at the back of the drawer - i spot them every now and again when having a rummage, but honestly i wouldn't fancy going back into them.

I did the whole early naughties teeny tiny zip, low rise (boot cut iirc?) jeans and crop top. Little short hoody. I rocked it then - no way i'm donning that look again! My kids would think i'd lost the plot 😂

QuizzlyBears · 31/03/2025 10:32

I think people look best when they are wearing flattering clothes, suited to their body shape and which make them happy so they feel comfortable wearing them. That’s the only type of ‘style’ I care about really, on me or anyone else!

MumWifeOther · 31/03/2025 10:33

Daisyrainbows · 31/03/2025 07:21

Respectfully yes they did. I worked in a fashion office with dozens of young 20 somethings and it was worn albeit a long long time ago. Circa 2016 2017

Edited

Never in my life have I ever seen a young 20 something in a floral dress and white trainers. Maybe 30s. Do you have photographic evidence? 🤣

Sunbeam01 · 31/03/2025 10:33

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 31/03/2025 07:47

Oh no, I’m going to London today and it appears I don’t have the appropriate footwear 😳 will they actually let me in? Do they have emergency pairs of Reebok C85’s(?) or clogs (clogs!!) that I can borrow in order to not cause anyone to roll their eyes at my outfit?

What a bizarre response. The OP asked about looks being 'in' or 'out' and I gave my opinion.

Nobody will roll their eyes because no-one will care what you are wearing.

Clogs have been 'in' for a few years now. Many wearing them with socks. Yet you've completely missed that and do not appear to know what C85's are. So you don't follow trends and that's fine but there's no need to be aggressive on a trend based thread.

Give it until 2032 and you'll probably be wearing them under the guise of 'I don't follow trends or fashion'.

FuckityFux · 31/03/2025 10:48

Thank god for that. I’ve been happily dressing ahead of current fashion trends my entire life and would hate to find myself actually fashionable.

That would definitely make me feel old! 😂😂

I’m not going to send you my CV! I’ve worked in numerous fashion buying offices with women my age. If you weren’t around young women in 2017 I don’t think you’ll ever be able to recall it.

CookingFatCat · 31/03/2025 11:11

Wear what you like. At my age my mum wore pleated skirts and polo neck jumpers and had a perm and a headscarf. She always looked put together but it was like a look she gravitated towards.
I am so am glad that times have moved on and we aren’t relegated to a certain look due to our age.

InMyMNEra · 31/03/2025 11:15

I also agree that it was a 30+ look, not 20s

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/03/2025 11:18

For all those saying to OP to wear what she wants, who cares about fashion…

she does! She’s literally said in her Op she wants to keep her look fresh and contemporary. So your posts are useless and irrelevant.

miniaturepixieonacid · 31/03/2025 11:19

I genuinely didn't think 'in' and 'out' was a thing anymore. The last 10 years or so, all styles seem to be available and widely worn. I literally just wear what I like and have never felt either 'in' or 'out' at all. Just clothed. I thought fashions and trends themselves were 'out'! Maybe I'm just oblivious though.
