Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

YASSSSS 🙌

That's rich when the thread is in AIBU.

Even if it were in Style and Beauty, it's called Style not Fashion for a reason.
I suggest you have one "So Last Season" thread for planet burning fast fashion muppets and leave Style for people who are actually stylish and not sheep following the herd.

This is a pointless distinction. While style is more personal, it can – and frequently does – incorporate fashion. It therefore makes sense to discuss fashion in the Style section.

I'm not sure why being interested in fashion makes you a muppet or a sheep. It doesn't mean you rush out and buy the latest look, it just means you take an interest. I'm interested in books and often buy new ones that are recommended elsewhere - it doesn't make me a muppet or a sheep.

I don’t think it’s really a question of style versus fashion though, as so many PPs are saying.

A trend always starts with someone looking fabulous in something and then people start copying the look, and it grows exponentially until it’s become a ‘look’.

But that look always dies when unattractive and typically unfashionable people all start wearing it, so it puts everyone off.

That cycle happens almost every time and usually lasts for a couple of years.

What a bizarre response. The OP asked about looks being 'in' or 'out' and I gave my opinion.

Nobody will roll their eyes because no-one will care what you are wearing.

Clogs have been 'in' for a few years now. Many wearing them with socks. Yet you've completely missed that and do not appear to know what C85's are. So you don't follow trends and that's fine but there's no need to be aggressive on a trend based thread.

Give it until 2032 and you'll probably be wearing them under the guise of 'I don't follow trends or fashion'.

It was an attempt at humour, one person at least posted that they would roll their eyes at the floral dress/denim jacket/white trainers combo. Calling me aggressive is just plain silly 😂 people having a different opinion isn’t aggressive, maybe try not to take yourself so seriously!

A couple of years ago almost every middle aged woman was wearing the floral dress and white trainers.

Looked like a bunch of unimaginative clones….

And most of us will be again this summer because -

-the shops are still selling them
-we care about the planet more than fast fashion
-we don't need to look 'imaginative' for people like you who look down on us.

Presumably your 'look' is unique and not following some trend of teenager 'clones' or women not yet middle aged?

HTH

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 31/03/2025 09:57

You bought a pair of white New Balance trainers, which were all the rage a year or two ago.

Yet it's everyone else who's gullible to marketing and influencers.

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice I had/have no idea if they were in or out or 'all the rage'.
I needed a pair of comfortable shoes for a lot of city walking I often do (often 6 miles in a day.)

I can't wear ballet flats and I don't like open toed shoes in the city (too many experiences of people standing on my toes.)

They fitted the bill as I have very narrow feet and struggle to find any shoes to fit.

I ordered loads of styles and brands to try on and those worked for me.

Maybe not insult posters without knowing the full circumstances?

HTH.

And spectacularly missing the point that a bunch of young people out together often look like mindless clones too! Ageist fucking nonsense.

Veja trainers have been out for around 4 years in London.

Sorry I'm not trying to be rude.

I'd say white trainers are out however there are exceptions like Reebok C85's.

Clogs are in for women, in a big way.

Not taken as rude at all. I'm actually secretly glad to hear that Vejas are out because the couple of women I know who wear nothing else are definitely giving off the 'I'm so on trend and you're not' attitude. Quite nice to hear they're also wrong!
Plus white trainers were a nightmare to keep clean.

We just can’t be bothered shopping anymore. We re wear the same stuff for eons rather than polluting the planet with polyester tat.

Wear what makes you happy. Why do you care what others think?

I presume you don’t include yourself in this group of people who obviously should just be shunned and not allowed out 😂

Jeez. I missed that post! Deeply unpleasant.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/03/2025 14:12

Over 30? Lost (or never had) youthful good looks? Bigger than a size 8? Fuck off home and stop scaring the young and ‘fashionable’ people.

Candlecharge01 · 31/03/2025 14:15

You will have to prise my floral dress, white trainers and denim jacket combo out of my cold dead hands.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/03/2025 14:20

I still like floral dresses (in fact, I’m just about to order some fabric and make a couple more) but tend to wear them with DMs or black or pink trainers, rather than white ones. I prefer my white trainers with plain black dresses. And my denim jacket is a washed black oversized DKNY one. Fashionable? No idea. Do I care? Nope.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/03/2025 14:21

Also, the OP hasn’t been back. My money is on Daily Heil journo.

BlackDollsEyes · 31/03/2025 14:28

Surely what is 'in' and what is 'out' is dependent on your crowd (to a degree)?

e.g. Very few people in their 40s feel comfortable wearing the same things that are fashionable for teenagers. What you see as fashionable is likely to be what you see your peers wearing a lot of and possibly what you think looks good on them.

So even if you are wanting to stay fashionable, it doesn't really matter what a younger colleague thinks because they are not really the judge of what is 'right' for someone older to wear.

Personally, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone in floral dress and trainers, even though that's not my own style. It certainly wouldn't stand out to me as old fashioned.

Besides, trends used to last decades, then they lasted years and now they seem to last about 4 mins Grin

Dare I hazard a guess that you’re not yet middle aged? It comes for us all at some point! Hopefully..

Well thank goodness if we are seeing the back of white trainers at least!

I'm sick of the sight of trainers.

They are OK in their place and I understand they are comfortable but I don't understand how women were brainwashed into thinking they actually look good with dresses. Give me a pair of Roman sandals or chunky sandals with a dress any day.

I just can't get away from thinking wearing trainers in summer must result in disgusting smelly, sweaty feet.

Where do you live that you actually get a summer hot enough to sweat, Dubai? I consider it lucky if it's not raining.

😂I only wear white dresses on holiday (can’t be trusted in them for more than a couple of hours)!

Well I was brought up in the NE of England and when I was younger often in summer I was barefoot in the house and garden. And actually occasionally in the street, although that fill me with disgust now.
I live in the W of Scotland now and still like to be barefoot in the house in Summer and it's plenty warm enough here outside for sandals in summer. Although admittedly not in the rain: I can't abide the way feet slip about in sandals in wet weather.
I walk about a lot, I'm generally on the move. And I find trainers hot and unpleasant in warm weather. Similarly I've never understood how people can wear " summer boots" as I've seen some people do.
