In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

If you really like the shoes and you can afford them, it’s really not a waste of money. You’re allowed to have nice things! DH and I spent £20k on a cutlery set when we were young, pre-kids and had money. That’s arguably a ridiculous amount of money to spend on knives & forks, but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

£20,000 on cutlery?! Is that a typo?!

weshallovercomeaswevedonebefore · 30/03/2025 19:55

20k on knives and forks?! Really?!

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 19:56

That is a lot of money. I'm assuming it's solid silver at that price!
It does make me feel better that you say you are still using them 20 years later and get pleasure out of it - I suppose if you then look at it as a yearly cost.

I think the shoes make me feel so bad because they aren't things that last in that way generally because they wear out even if repaired.

I want to know more about the solid gold---- cutlery.

But OP, if they bring you pleasure then try to focus on that. Presumably if they're designer they also have some resale value so you can comfort yourself with that!

Bahahahah, your shoes fade into insignificance and cue lots of condemnation/disbelief or one-upmanship
OP close the thread now, whatever your shoes cost, the thread is no longer about your shoes .

Lindererer32 · 30/03/2025 20:01

Well, OP must feel better now?

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 20:01

@Lindererer32 a little bit

Jesus. I am never ever going to question spending money on more books ever again 🤣

Also here for the full story on the cutlery

BillyNoProblems · 30/03/2025 20:05

I love the idea of spending a fortune on cutlery, embracing life! I've just spent 25k on a car for my mum, took the money out of savings because I felt so strongly that I'd rather have her drive a safer car than her old, small car. Also, spent 3k on a handbag that I've kept under the bed for 2 years because it's too expensive to use. Got it out today and wore it for the first time and it gave me so much pleasure

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 30/03/2025 20:05

We spent just under £1000 2 years ago on two wooden "steamer" chairs which we didn't need and have barely used. We can't leave them out in the garden because they cost too much money but they are ridiculously heavy and difficult to move in and out of the garage. Complete waste of money and I really regret it. I think I had a moment of madness imagining myself as some sort of Edwardian heroine lying in a stately home garden rather than a fat middle aged woman with a small town garden.

Edited to add: £20k on cutlery?????

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 20:06

After @edwinbear s post about the cutlery, I googled silver cutlery to look at prices. It lead me to this on the Asprey site - if you would like to "Enhance your dining experience with Asprey's Bobsleigh Salt and Pepper Shaker set" (which is admittedly very cute) you can do that for ... guess how much?

. . . . .

yes

£7,950.

Jesus. I am never ever going to question spending money on more books ever again 🤣

Quite. Makes the £26 I spent on a paperback of The Chalet School and the Oberland (admittedly 20 years ago & I had very little money at the time but I was so happy to finally own a copy) pale into insignificance!

twistyizzy · 30/03/2025 20:13

Spent £10K on horse. Told DH it was £3K and said horse then promptly racked up 4K of vets bills in the first year!
Completely couldn't afford it.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 30/03/2025 20:14

We impulse booked a last minute 3 night trip to Venice, paying extra for a canal view.

I’m currently working extra shifts to pay it off, having put it on interest free credit.

It was the most amazing trip and I have no regrets, best trip ever. I also have had a significant bereavement and it has definitely made me rethink things. I’m trying to do things on my bucket list rather than thinking I’ll do it one day….that day may not come!

HappyHunting101 · 30/03/2025 20:14

I've never understood that stereotypical thing you see in movies where poor people are pocketing the silver knives and forks in fancy houses. I've always thought "what's the point, how much can they really be worth? And who would you sell them to?" I guess I was wrong and the right set are worth it 😄

I bought that lumea hair laser zapper thing for about £500 and have never really used it. That one bothers me.

modgepodge · 30/03/2025 20:14

Even as a yearly cost that cutlery is £1000 a year or almost £3 a day!

FinallyDecided · 30/03/2025 20:14

I went a bit mad on the Rosa Bloom website not long ago. Set me back about £500. Don't know when I'll wear any of it. No regrets.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 30/03/2025 20:16

Don't beat yourself up look at all these men having mid wife crisis buying sports car and weekends away with their mistress you are small time spender compared with it. You deserve a treat - wear and enjoy them!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 30/03/2025 20:17

I recently spent on a handbag, I really didn’t need it and I’m not even a massive handbag person. I’ve been having a tough time of late and I find I’m shopping a fair bit (need to rein it in) It wasn’t loads of money, few hundred but more than I have ever! spent on a bag. Although when I look at it I can’t help but smile. Haven’t even used it yet but plan to when I’m away in April.

I am trying to complete the set at the moment as I read through it! DH does not need to know how much some of the innocuous looking 2nd hand paperbacks cost BlushGrin

Titasaducksarse · 30/03/2025 20:23

£20k on cutlery is obscene but do you have stunning crockery too? If not and you're eating off ikea's finest then what's the point, my opinion only.
