I want a copper mixing bowl even though I dont do a lot of cooking and am not a professional, or even a good amateur

I went down a rabbit hole last night looking for mixing bowls. I was just after an extra one, bog standard, a nice high sided one that wont result in me and the kitchen and the cat being splattered when beating things with an electric whisk.

A recipe I was following yesterday specified that I must beat some egg whites in a metal bowl and I wondered why.

I now find out that its recommended to beat egg whites in copper bowls as a preference, something to do with something, cant quite remember.

That detail has gone from my mind as Ive been looking at well expensive unnecessary shiny copper mixing bowls, that actually dont even have bases and so cant stand themselves up properly

so

YABU - you're wasting your time and money when you only make the odd batch of muffins, stop acting like a magpie

YANBU - its lovely to have overpriced shiny things in the house.

Thats the sort of thing I would do as well, I would go and order something thats worth more than my car!!! And then just look at it!

My stainless steel mixing bowl cost me about £6 from IKEA a hundred years ago. Egg whites beat up and stiffen better in a metal bowl - plastic bowls can sometimes have residual grease (yum) and egg whites HATE fat and it stops them puffing up nicely.

Copper is apparently best as bits of copper come off and stabilise the foam. I don’t like the thought of eating copper with my lemon meringue pie!

But I am a full believer in Things That Bring You Joy so embrace your inner magpie and go get your bowl, OP!

Treat yo self!

Mumdiva99 · 30/03/2025 19:09

How much is the overly expensive copper bowl?
I can't vote until I know.....
A not used kitchen aid for £900 probably unnecessary.....a £40 bowl that brings joy - a splurge but if you can afford it, why not.

The one Im looking at is 60 quid

But while looking, you know amazon brings up other things you might be interested in, so it also brought up a Kenwood mixer, 250 quid, looks really nice. Comes with a metal bowl....

So really if I dont buy the copper bowl and buy the Kenwood, Ive only spent 190 quid on the Kenwood havent I. Thats how shopping maths works isnt it.

🤭🤭 i am exactly the same

My ninja toaster that I needed just sits there looking pretty

I'm now off the carbs and dd hates toast 🙈

Get a copper mixing bowl then. It’s hardly the decision of the century is it.

Poonu · 30/03/2025 19:19

Can anyone recommend a fancy blender that I can put in the dishwasher

Pipsquiggle · 30/03/2025 19:20

It's worth getting a couple metal mixing bowls. I got my stainless steel ones from Sainsbury's nearly 25 years ago. Also worth getting a bigger stoneware one e.g. mason cash - great for doughs and larger cake mixes

soupyspoon · 30/03/2025 19:20

I see the voting is evening out now. It started off showing I was completely and utterly unreasonable but now its 50/50

I think its right to give a running update.

Calling Helsinki, give us your votes tonight please?

It’s exactly the sort of thing you should buy. Very good for a person to indulge the magpie urge occasionally!

But. EBay. It’s exactly the sort of thing some people stop appreciating after a bit. Save yourself a fortune and get to feel virtuous too!

Well the Mason Cash ones caught my eye of course last night but I have difficulties with dexterity and grip so would never manage the weight of them and they dont have handles or pouring spouts.

voting is now 52/48. This is a definitive and binding result as we all know. @soupyspoon is now obliged to buy 🤷‍♀️

This is really good advice. Particularly the indulging bit.

Oh yes. And to enact the decision as quickly as possible otherwise it wouldnt be the will of the people.

But now Im toying with the old stand mixer debate, see how quickly I change my mind about these things.

Nope

buy the bowl

mixer is an old, stale debate. Best left

Moanranger · 30/03/2025 19:27

I have a copper mixing bowl (had it for 20+ years) which I use specifically for whipping egg whites (some other stuff, too, as it is big & therefore useful) The copper aids in the whipping process (this is due to ion charges) the copper doesn’t come off or anything.
Get one, you will like it!

soupyspoon · 30/03/2025 19:29

What about a stand mixer AND a copper bowl

I nearly wrote bowel there.

I can't vote on this, because, YABU because 60 quid for a bowl!! I would faint! But also, YANBU because I am tight, the heart wants what it wants and you might blow more than that a week on, idk, whisky for all I know, in which case it's a drop in the ocean.

If it was the Kenwood prospero plus mixer with the glass blender jug, food processor attachment, mincer, juicer and coffee grinder. Buy it. It's compact and it does everything.

Edited

Does your vote change if I tell you that the current mixing bowl (bowel) I have is a plastic one that was 8 quid?

So one v cheap bowl and one slightly more. Erm much more.

Sort of even stevens isnt it?

I ended up with it when it was time to replace my £12 electric hand whisk. No regrets 😂
