I want a copper mixing bowl even though I dont do a lot of cooking and am not a professional, or even a good amateur

I went down a rabbit hole last night looking for mixing bowls. I was just after an extra one, bog standard, a nice high sided one that wont result in me and the kitchen and the cat being splattered when beating things with an electric whisk.

A recipe I was following yesterday specified that I must beat some egg whites in a metal bowl and I wondered why.

I now find out that its recommended to beat egg whites in copper bowls as a preference, something to do with something, cant quite remember.

That detail has gone from my mind as Ive been looking at well expensive unnecessary shiny copper mixing bowls, that actually dont even have bases and so cant stand themselves up properly

so

YABU - you're wasting your time and money when you only make the odd batch of muffins, stop acting like a magpie

YANBU - its lovely to have overpriced shiny things in the house.

It's worth getting a couple metal mixing bowls. I got my stainless steel ones from Sainsbury's nearly 25 years ago. Also worth getting a bigger stoneware one e.g. mason cash - great for doughs and larger cake mixes

I want a tala Made in the UK pink bowl - just because they look pretty. (And I try to support what's left of UK manufacturing )

So what do i need a large mixing bowl for ?

I have wanted one too for a while. I completely understand this strange desire!

It can multi-task , you can soak your feet in it too Grin

Bugger. https://link.marktplaats.nl/m2248281016?utm_source=ios_social&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialbuttons&utm_content=app_ios Bugger. Bugger bugger.

I neither need it nor can really afford it. The size is preposterous for domestic use. I will not be buying it. But ooh how I swoon. FFS

That is a work of art.

AdaColeman · 30/03/2025 21:33

I've got a copper bowl, mine has dimples!
I didn't buy it though, I inherited it.
It is a lovely thing. 💕 💕

Difficultsituation89 · 30/03/2025 21:40

I got a kenwood k mixer from Amazon warehouse for a discount. Brand new, just the box had been opened. I wouldn’t be without it, love it for making pizza dough and glad I didn’t spend a bomb on the kitchen aid I wanted now 😂

CarrieOnComplaining · 30/03/2025 21:45

I want a copper mixing bowl now.
Despite almost never ever whisking egg whites. I will never attempt my own royal icing again. Never.

And they can’t go in the dishwasher. But they must be a doddle to wash, compared, say, to a roasting tin with welded on burnt bits? And especially as mine would never get dirty.

OP, would yours be on display on lovely shelves alongside carefully collated storage jars and lovely pottery?

I think I would vote no if you were planning to shove it in a cupboard.

Here you go OP. I would take the Eurostar to Paris to buy it. Fun day out.

My mother had one exactly the same as that. It was her grandmothers. She was head cook for Marks and Spencer’s.

Oh no that would look amazing in my kitchen, why do I click on these things?

😄 I know, i would use it once a year, like my sandwich toaster, but it'd just be so beautiful as a piece of kitchen art 🤭

How I wish I could go back in time, so I don't open this link and therefore am unaware of this very expensive item that I now need to buy.

😄😄😄 I honestly feel like it's calling my name

Pipsquiggle · 30/03/2025 22:16

I have a Dr Oetker stoneware mixing bowl that I got about 20 years ago. I use a hand whisk in and no marks

@Needspaceforlego I use my big bowl for making bread and letting it rise and making large quantities of cake mix e.g a 3 or 4 tier cake etc.

YANBU OP!

I meant to quote that green kitchenaid mixer with the walnut bowl...

KittenPause · 30/03/2025 23:54

@upsofloating
@Flightsoffancy

thanks for confirming I can use an electric whisk in a Mason Cash bowl

I’m going to buy one because I really do need a bigger stable bowl. I currently just use PYREX or metal bowls

Mumdiva99 · 31/03/2025 07:21

I hope op bought the set of 3 from Ebay. They are gorgeous, cheaper than the 1 new one and preloved - which gives them history.
I just have an orange plastic mixing bowl from my mum - she had a set of 2. I thought they were tupperwear but I'm not so sure.... they are not dishwasher safe, are about 45 years old. They are high so cream and handheld mixer work together. But now I want a copper one too....

soupyspoon · 31/03/2025 07:42

I havent bought any copper bowls yet

I woke up thinking about the kitchen aid!!!!

I admit I bought the Kenwood standmixer last night, I found an excellent bargain, brand new on ebay, damaged box, with a discount code was nearly 100 cheaper than amazon. Cant wait for it to arrive.

It comes with a metal bowl. No handles though.

So shopping maths means Im nearly 100 quid better off than I was yesterday!

TroysMammy · 31/03/2025 08:09

How annoying to read this. I have 2 plastic mixing bowls, one pyrex, one Mason, one melamine but no metal bowl. Off to Google if one is necessary and use my mantra - Do I want it? Do I need it? Can I afford it?

KittenPause · 31/03/2025 08:23

I bought a Mason Cash bowl last night on the back of this thread. It was an absolute bargain.

I’ll be using it loads because I need a heavy bowl that just stays where it is when I’m mixing

i wasn’t sure re size so I bought the 26 which was only £11. It was the traditional beige cane design.

heldinadream · 31/03/2025 08:30

@soupyspoon did you miss this post? You must have missed it! It's the most stunning bargain as far as I can see (I had literally never thought about copper mixing bowls until five minutes ago in my whole life!)
These look made for your culinary desires. Three! 😂

Yes I saw this, but they seem a bit small and even though Im quite capable of buying unecessary things, I dont need 3

I keep a lot of tabs open though of things Im still looking at and they are one of them

As you were...😂
