I want a copper mixing bowl even though I dont do a lot of cooking and am not a professional, or even a good amateur

I went down a rabbit hole last night looking for mixing bowls. I was just after an extra one, bog standard, a nice high sided one that wont result in me and the kitchen and the cat being splattered when beating things with an electric whisk.

A recipe I was following yesterday specified that I must beat some egg whites in a metal bowl and I wondered why.

I now find out that its recommended to beat egg whites in copper bowls as a preference, something to do with something, cant quite remember.

That detail has gone from my mind as Ive been looking at well expensive unnecessary shiny copper mixing bowls, that actually dont even have bases and so cant stand themselves up properly

so

YABU - you're wasting your time and money when you only make the odd batch of muffins, stop acting like a magpie

YANBU - its lovely to have overpriced shiny things in the house.

Get one if it’s going to make you happy and you can afford it (I suppose not necessarily in that order) I am a great believer in having things in your home that make you happy when you look at them (and use them of course 👀)

I ended up with it when it was time to replace my £12 electric hand whisk. No regrets 😂

Well luckily for me I dont like it

And thats another problem Im totally style over substance. That Kenwood stand mixer, the bowl hasnt got a handle and I did tell myself that I really need bowls with handles because of my hands

I have seen other mixers where the bowls have handles but I dont like them as much.

It's worth getting a couple metal mixing bowls. I got my stainless steel ones from Sainsbury's nearly 25 years ago. Also worth getting a bigger stoneware one e.g. mason cash - great for doughs and larger cake mixes

I'd love a Mason Cash bowl - do you know if electric beaters mark the inside of one though?

Thats lovely but I would never be able to pick it up comfortably due to the weight, and certainly not with a ton of batter in it.

What you want is something nice to look at and a dopamine hit

I bought a big mason cash mixing bowl (in the sale at Sainsburys) and about a week later I knocked it out of the cupboard and smashed it. 😪

SiobhanSharpe · 30/03/2025 20:27

I have my late DM's Mason Cash bowl, it's huge but if you're going to use it it's almost compulsory to beat cake mixture in it by hand, with a wooden spoon -- nothing else feels quite right.
(and I have an all-singing, all-dancing Kenwood processor for most uses. Functional but not pretty.)
Of course, the thing about the beautiful copper bowls is just that. They look stunning in the right kind of kitchen, even if you can't actually put them down on a flat surface. But, what the hell, if you make loads of soufflés or meringues it seems they really do the business when it comes to egg whites.

KittenPause · 30/03/2025 20:27

Just make sure you never put anything tomato based in a copper bowl

That is the risk with ceramic or glass, thats the sort of thing I would do.

Stunning. And the loop! The 40cm version though, my very goodness. I think I need the smelling salts

TennesseeStella · 30/03/2025 20:42

Step away from the bowl!
Just for now. And if you still want one in a week, buy it then.

KittenPause · 30/03/2025 20:45

is it ok to use a handheld electric whisk in a Mason Cash bowl ?

Im backing away, but still looking at it

And is it ok to use an electric whisk in one, all the pictures Ive seen is of some one in a rustic kitchen using some sort of switch to beat the egg whites.

Make sure you check the size of it, I just looked on Amazon and saw an "Extra large" copper mixing bowl for £60. But then when you look at the size of it it's under 8 inches, so it's teeny tiny!

OwlBasket · 30/03/2025 20:55

Bugger. https://link.marktplaats.nl/m2248281016?utm_source=ios_social&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialbuttons&utm_content=app_ios Bugger. Bugger bugger.

I neither need it nor can really afford it. The size is preposterous for domestic use. I will not be buying it. But ooh how I swoon. FFS

Flightsoffancy · 30/03/2025 20:59

I have my great grandmother's Mason Cash bowl which is approx 100 years old. I agree about a wooden spoon feeling more appropriate, but I do use an electric whisk in it. Just getting it out makes me feel all Downton Abbey.
I now also want a copper bowl. So pretty, and quite sciencey with the ions. (N.B. I can't remember the last time I whisked egg whites)

Yes the one Ive seen is 24 cm, when I check that, its 9 inches!!!

For 62 quid

And postage thank you very much.

How I wish I could go back in time, so I don't open this link and therefore am unaware of this very expensive item that I now need to buy.
