I want a copper mixing bowl even though I dont do a lot of cooking and am not a professional, or even a good amateur

I went down a rabbit hole last night looking for mixing bowls. I was just after an extra one, bog standard, a nice high sided one that wont result in me and the kitchen and the cat being splattered when beating things with an electric whisk.

A recipe I was following yesterday specified that I must beat some egg whites in a metal bowl and I wondered why.

I now find out that its recommended to beat egg whites in copper bowls as a preference, something to do with something, cant quite remember.

That detail has gone from my mind as Ive been looking at well expensive unnecessary shiny copper mixing bowls, that actually dont even have bases and so cant stand themselves up properly

so

YABU - you're wasting your time and money when you only make the odd batch of muffins, stop acting like a magpie

YANBU - its lovely to have overpriced shiny things in the house.

I make loads of things because i have a Kenwood (the KMix) so I can throw all the ingredients in while I do something else and because the bowl goes in the dishwasher. So (shopping maths) you may well save more than you spent because you'll be making things from scratch, plus you'll be eating more healthily and who can put a price on that really?

This is very very true, such wisdom in these words.

I make everything from scratch already but even so, perhaps time saved I can calculate by charging myself around £40ph (not unreasonable I feel) which means that Im quids in again.

I now want a copper mixing bowl.

Before opening this thread I only wanted a Mason Cash set of bowls "In the Forest" especially the fox one

and a red KitchenAid hand mixer in fact this whole site is fatal for my credit card

And a Caran d'Ache pencil sharpener

I’ve just bought the owl one 😬

AdoraBell · 31/03/2025 10:59

YANBU to want this OP if you can afford to get one then go ahead and buy one.

hididdlyho · 31/03/2025 11:01

I just use a pan on the rare occasion a recipe calls for a metal bowl, but that's because our house doesn't have much storage. I did buy a nice ceramic mixing bowl a few years ago, then didn't want to use it for baking in case I broke it, so it gets used as a fruit dish. Still makes me smile when I walk in the kitchen.

BigDahliaFan · 31/03/2025 11:04

I really want a Kenwood Chef - I bake maybe 4 times a year. I also want a shiny coffee maker - I don't drink coffee.

The one Im looking at is 60 quid

But while looking, you know amazon brings up other things you might be interested in, so it also brought up a Kenwood mixer, 250 quid, looks really nice. Comes with a metal bowl....

So really if I dont buy the copper bowl and buy the Kenwood, Ive only spent 190 quid on the Kenwood havent I. Thats how shopping maths works isnt it.

That’s my kinda maths 😄

Just been to look at copper mixing bowls.

There is a range of prices, some way less than £60, and plenty of choice of new and antique to choose from.

Go for it OP. If you don’t use it you can sell on.

LuckyOrMaybe · 31/03/2025 12:51

Enjoy your Kenwood mixer when it comes. I'm sure you'll get plenty of use out of it.

And thank you for reminding me what I can get for my birthday in just over a month - I've had a Kenwood for years but only plastic bowls. I think I can justify asking for a stainless steel bowl now.

I probably make royal icing a couple of times a year, and a stand mixer makes an enormous difference. Saves quite a bit of time over a hand mixer even for cake batters in my experience - because I toss the butter and sugar in and can be getting other things out of the cupboard while they mix and so on.

I use pyrex bowls for everyday mixing, and also have 3 inherited ceramic ones ("Easimix" which evidently go on for ever given there seem plenty turning up online, after a quick look). The large one must be at least 40 cm and comes out for the Christmas cake - I make a huge batter for three cakes at once and the big bowl is needed at the end to mix the fruit in. Sometimes it doesn't quite fit ...

LuckyOrMaybe · 31/03/2025 12:52

Reviewing your subject heading - I'm sure your Kenwood will turn you into a good amateur cook if you genuinely aren't already :)

ScrollingLeaves · 31/03/2025 13:15

This thread is good for the soul somehow.

I had a Mason Cash bowl (a big one) that I rarely used because it was heavy and awkward to get out of the only space in my kitchen where I had room to store it. It also got marked by the beaters of my elderly Kenwood Chefette that I inherited from my mum and that I wished would break so I could justify getting a better one with all the bells and whistles, I'd give my left hand for dough hooks, me hearties! Then one day I went to get it out and found the bottom had fallen out of it 😠 From that day on Mason Cash were dead to me, although if they had a badger design I'd forgive them instantly.

Don't have room for a big stand mixer 😢

Regarding copper bowls, I don't need one but I've been to loads of National Trust properties and they're often just lying around.

I should have reviewed the subject heading anyway because I realise that I said cooking when I mean baking. I do a lot of cooking, Im a really good cook, but wouldnt need the stand mixer for that. Its baking that Im a bit shoddy at, even though I enjoy it and would like to do more of it. I find the electric mixer hard work and it was dirt cheap so really only has one speed, its rubbish!!

The problem with the ones that are way less than 60, is that they're either very very small and the size of a small bowl of nuts, or they're copper coloured on the outside and stainless steel on the inside, or they're from china and how do I know that is actually copper that they are flogging me?

maybe you should buy my copper bowl from me! was a wedding present - has to hang (no base)... even has a vintage-ish ding on the side...

seriously tho, we have one, DH uses it several times a year but I NEVER do. It's pretty, but it needs its own special cleaning to keep it all shiny and pretty (you rub it w lemon and salt) - it's kind of nice but definitely doesn't bring enough joy!

stand mixer on the other hand (like you we have a Kenwood), now that really HAS been a good buy!

Get a copper mixing bowl then. It’s hardly the decision of the century is it.

Oh you're a joy
A right chip pisser

The KA copper bowl has a handle @soupyspoon Just got a marketing email from Fortunm’s which included a KA with said copper bowl.

Hold on, I didnt realise there was special cleaning involved.

I mean I know I wouldnt put it in the dishwasher, Im not keen on the dishwasher anyway, but special cleaning?

I might be going off this idea.
