Question about removal men - will they take my food shopping?

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:55

Just that really

I should be moving shortly, fingers crossed, and have agreed £500 for removal men to take our stuff

It costs extra because they need to remove my fridge doors

I am going to do a HUGE food shop of heavy items, such as bottles and tins and jars, bags of rice and pasta, just all of the heavy shopping, as its a 2nd floor flat, no lift

Aibu to think that they would take that stuff? It would be in heavy duty shopping bags

Depends what your contract is so you need to ask them. Surely easier to do a big online shop for delivery after you move?

ObliviousCoalmine · 26/03/2025 11:57

I’d have it all delivered to the new place, why wouldn’t you do that?

StrawberrySquash · 26/03/2025 11:57

I would pack in boxes so that it can be stacked in the van. Bags are hard to manage. But otherwise I'd just view it as food you have in your home that needs moving.

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:57

It's a 2nd floor flat, with no lift, and I am a teeny and tired woman 😭

I think that you need to ask them not the internet. As pp suggested though better to do a food shop for the day after and just make sure you have coffee, milk, loo roll and get a takeway.

How are you going to manage the shopping going forward then?

I'd also pack into boxes or at least into plastic crates which can be stacked.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 26/03/2025 12:00

How much stuff is being moves? Are we talking a full property worth or just a few individual items? If it's a full property just box the food up and have them move it with the rest

Get it delivered to the new place.

I plan to do a huge shop so then I only have to top up the essentials monthly

Ie tins of tomatoes and pasta bake, big bags of rice

We had packing service too, and they took very scrap of thing. If you’re having packing too then they will take it. If not I’d expect them to take it packed into boxes

Magnastorm · 26/03/2025 12:03

I don't see why not. It's just stuff they need to load onto the van.

But... surely the logical and fastest thing to do is ask the actual company....?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/03/2025 12:03

Have you booked for them to pack the flat up for you, @Changednameadviceneededxx? If so, they will box up all the shopping you have mentioned. Otherwise, I would agree with the previous poster who has suggested you box it up - they will definitely take it then.

BMW6 · 26/03/2025 12:03

But what are your plans for getting heavy shopping upstairs in the future?

Seems a bit odd to me! Most people run down their food supplies in preparation for a house move, not buy loads in that has to me transported!?

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 12:05

What's the wording of your contract with them?

If it's all contents then on the day you bag it or box it up for them to take away.

If there have already listed the things they are collecting then you do need to speak to them!

'Hi, I've booked your removal service on X date but does it include foodstuff from the fridge and freezer and kitchen cupboards. I will have it bagged up but just wanted to check it was all included with your device. Many thanks. June'

Do you have a lot of storage in this new flat then and you're positive the floor can take the weight of what sounds like years worth of food 😧

Darkclothes · 26/03/2025 12:08

Le tins sounds interesting. 😆
Is that a cooked pasta bake you are referring to?

myplace · 26/03/2025 12:11

They quoted based on what they saw when they visited. If there’s more stuff than fits in the cupboards they may quibble.

Tesco usually come up a flight of stairs, I believe.

AudiobookListener · 26/03/2025 12:11

Removals firm won't care what your stuff is, but they will charge you extra if there is more of it than they expected/quoted for.

viques · 26/03/2025 12:13

I honestly can’t see the advantage of buying and then carting heavy groceries with you. For a start you will only have to unpack them, decide where you are going to keep them, and make sure you put the new stuff at the back to rotate with anything you already have.

Unless you are moving to a remote island with no shop and a boat every other Tuesday I would focus on clearing out and getting rid of the stuff you don’t want in your new home so you are not paying to have it moved ( like my friend who after three house moves eventually got round to unpacking the sealed and unlabelled boxes in the attic and found she had been paying removers to move large boxes filled with smaller boxes that they had bought for the first move and never used)

Makes sense to me. If the removal people take it then that'll save the op having to worry about carrying heavy loads of food upstairs, at least for a while.
Then she can decide what to do in the future.

Bruisername · 26/03/2025 12:15

I doubt they will carry it in bags so would box it up.

if it’s a lot they may charge more

NoKnit · 26/03/2025 12:17

Am I the only one that thinks £500 to move what sounds like at least a two person households worth of stuff including white good and furniture is too good to be true? I'm sure there'll be a catch somewhere

TheJollyMoose · 26/03/2025 12:17

YABU. This would be incredibly cheeky of you.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 26/03/2025 12:20

You do realise you can have food delivered to a 2nd floor flat? I do it every month! They don't just dump it outside the building.
