Question about removal men - will they take my food shopping?

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:55

Just that really

I should be moving shortly, fingers crossed, and have agreed £500 for removal men to take our stuff

It costs extra because they need to remove my fridge doors

I am going to do a HUGE food shop of heavy items, such as bottles and tins and jars, bags of rice and pasta, just all of the heavy shopping, as its a 2nd floor flat, no lift

Aibu to think that they would take that stuff? It would be in heavy duty shopping bags

Am I the only one that thinks £500 to move what sounds like at least a two person households worth of stuff including white good and furniture is too good to be true? I'm sure there'll be a catch somewhere

Yes I thought it was cheap

Zippedydodah · 26/03/2025 12:24

I assume that the £500 doesn’t include packing anything at all, just the removal.

I agree - I assume they're not packing as well but that seems very cheap to me.

Makes sense to me. If the removal people take it then that'll save the op having to worry about carrying heavy loads of food upstairs, at least for a while.
Then she can decide what to do in the future.

😭😭 i wasn't expecting to be lightly roasted like this

This is my thinking - if I've got several bags of the heavy stuff, I will only need to do small top up shops for the next year at least

Really?

They've got a Luton van, and they're taking down my assembled ikea furniture and reassembling it? 😬😬

I don't think that packing is included

Yeah just the removal

I'm going into a period flat on the 2nd floor so I couldn't attempt that myself 😭

Have you booked for them to pack the flat up for you, @Changednameadviceneededxx? If so, they will box up all the shopping you have mentioned. Otherwise, I would agree with the previous poster who has suggested you box it up - they will definitely take it then.

Will box some of it up, they did say that I can pack them into bags though, but I do think that 4 x bags of 10kg rice will be considered excessive 😬😬😬

I just don't want to have to worry

But what are your plans for getting heavy shopping upstairs in the future?

Seems a bit odd to me! Most people run down their food supplies in preparation for a house move, not buy loads in that has to me transported!?

I know, it's just my thinking that if I've bought all of the non perishable stuff, I won't have to manage up the stairs with it on my own in future

It's a 2nd floor flat, with no lift, and I am a teeny and tired woman 😭

Please don't take us back to the 1950s...

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 12:05

What's the wording of your contract with them?

If it's all contents then on the day you bag it or box it up for them to take away.

If there have already listed the things they are collecting then you do need to speak to them!

'Hi, I've booked your removal service on X date but does it include foodstuff from the fridge and freezer and kitchen cupboards. I will have it bagged up but just wanted to check it was all included with your device. Many thanks. June'

I did this, thank you

They've told me heavy duty bags should be okay, but I've got a lot of them so will see if I can box any of them up 😬😬

😭😭😭 I'm not trying to

But I admit, this moving business has made me very grateful for removal persons

Whow! 40kg of rice for a teeny woman! 😆

TickTockPolly · 26/03/2025 12:40

Did the removal company come and look at your current place to quote? If so they’ll have based it on your current possessions. If you add a load more in then they may expect to be paid extra and may even need another van.

dialfor · 26/03/2025 12:41

Why would you not just have it delivered to your new place?

Zippedydodah · 26/03/2025 12:24

I assume that the £500 doesn’t include packing anything at all, just the removal.

That's still cheap. My son is having to pay £350 to move from a tiny 1 bed flat which is just one sofa, one bed, a chest of drawers, a drier, shelving unit, desk, chair, bedside table and TV stand. He's moving everything else himself in his car doing multiple trips with his clothes, bedding, books, food, etc. £500 sounds ridiculously cheap especially if disassembly/reassembly of furniture. I don't suppose they've asked for cash and are doing in on the fiddle are they? No income tax...no VAT!

Please don't take us back to the 1950s...

Hold on, that's a bit unfair. I've just moved out of a first floor flat, really old building, with super steep, narrow, death-trap stairs. Lugging even 3 or 4 shopping bags up them involved clutching the bannister to help haul myself up and having a bit of a sit down when I got in, and I'm reasonably fit and young-ish! 10kg of rice would be pretty difficult... I've probably have to try and slide it up at an angle if it's in a box...?

I think I just don't understand, will Tesco/Asda/whoever not carry the shopping to your actual front door if you order it? I am fairly sure they will, they take it all the way into the kitchen for my granny.

So then it just doesn't make sense to me why you'd inconvenience yourself by having masses and masses of food to store for months, rather than just do a food shop online periodically once you've moved in.

Viviennemary · 26/03/2025 12:47

I think it would be cheeky. Because they will have done an estimate based on the contents. Not including a massive extra food shop. Imagine if they were delayed by roadworks for hours and the stuff is frozen or chilled,

But you will when it runs out, no? Unless by teeny woman you mean you’re only a weeny mouse and 40kg of rice is your lifetime supply?

😄😄😄 they did offer a 10% discount for cash but that's the price they quoted me

I did think it would be more

It's a Luton van - would that be big enough for a sofa, two armchairs, a table, fridge freezer, cooker, washing machine and then tonnes of boxes and ikea furniture? 😬😬😬

I grew up in a flat and remember my brother going downstairs for the food shop

I dunno, in my house now, they just bring it to the door - one time they brought it inside but it was so awkward, I wasn't sure what to say so just rambled about the weather

Storig food isn't a problem, I prefer to have things in bulk in my home

I hate running out of stuff 😄
