Question about removal men - will they take my food shopping?

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:55

Just that really

I should be moving shortly, fingers crossed, and have agreed £500 for removal men to take our stuff

It costs extra because they need to remove my fridge doors

I am going to do a HUGE food shop of heavy items, such as bottles and tins and jars, bags of rice and pasta, just all of the heavy shopping, as its a 2nd floor flat, no lift

Aibu to think that they would take that stuff? It would be in heavy duty shopping bags

I mean, sure but you’ll have to pay for it. As in, it will be included in the quote for your move. And needs to be packed appropriately.

But why not just have your food shopping delivered to your 2nd floor flat. They’ll put it literally on your counter for you. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And it’s included in the £5 or whatever delivery charge.

This thread has really tickled me 😂 (laughing emoji FYI)

I’ve had rice weevils and it was an absolute nightmare. I had to throw everything away. Flour, cereal, cupcake papers. Everything!

Will box some of it up, they did say that I can pack them into bags though, but I do think that 4 x bags of 10kg rice will be considered excessive 😬😬😬

I just don't want to have to worry

I think you'll be fine. I'd probably tip them £10 each anyway once the move is completed
Plus coffees/teas/biscuits

purser25 · 26/03/2025 19:59

Hate to worry you but beware of mice in the rice however I think you have a cat

Anything like rice or flour will get weevils if kept for a long time. Just get smaller bags if you struggle with carrying stuff. 40kg is ridiculous

But upthread you said tins and pastabake!

Why all the crying emojis OP???

Pasta bake is a jar/ packet/ tin.

100percenthagitude · 26/03/2025 13:19

And also stop with the tears emojis, ffs!!!

She can use which emojis she likes. Who do you think you are?

user9632579 · 27/03/2025 01:18

OP, you've got the worst replies.
It's totally fine. As long as it's not too much extra. If it's more just email them and they can tell you how much extra it will be although I doubt it would be more than £10/£20

healthybychristmas · 27/03/2025 02:32

They are taking the contents of your home so that includes the food. Stop worrying about it.

Tbrh · 27/03/2025 02:46

Magnastorm · 26/03/2025 12:03

I don't see why not. It's just stuff they need to load onto the van.

But... surely the logical and fastest thing to do is ask the actual company....?

This. And also realise if it's based on time/weight your essentially paying extra for that.

Yes I thought it was cheap

How are movers so cheap?
Get a home delivery next day.

JMSA · 27/03/2025 04:19

£500 is cheap. Don’t take the piss. Plus, it’s weird not to just get it delivered to your new address. The supermarket delivery guys will bring it up the stairs.

Glittertwins · 27/03/2025 05:45

£500 is very reasonably priced as others have said. But the size of their van for that price is not your problem. They should have come over to your current place to review contents/amount and made arrangements to have the appropriately sized van for everything (extra rice won’t make much of a difference there 😉).

pearbottomjeans · 27/03/2025 05:51

They’re not gonna leave stuff behind, otherwise what’s the point of movers, so yes. They’re moving heavier stuff than bottles.

FarmGirl78 · 27/03/2025 07:16

NoKnit · 26/03/2025 12:17

Am I the only one that thinks £500 to move what sounds like at least a two person households worth of stuff including white good and furniture is too good to be true? I'm sure there'll be a catch somewhere

Definitely. That's knock-off rate where I live, which is the cheap and cheerful NorthWest. I'd be worrying if a proper company quoted me that much.

You mentioned cat litter

aliceinawonderland · 27/03/2025 09:44

Interesting that a lot of posters say that online supermarket delivery men carry shopping up lots of flights of stairs.
Is this the case in blocks of flats where there’s no lift?

Of course.

They are paid to deliver to your door. If your door is on the 10th floor and there’s no lift, they still have to deliver it to your door.

If they left it at the bottom they wouldn’t have delivered it to you, because that isn’t where you live.

I've been told no before 😄

But will see how it goes on my first monthly shop

I'm taking a video of all of my stuff for them

And someone mentioned that stuff would be stacked, so I'm hopeful
