Question about removal men - will they take my food shopping?

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:55

Just that really

I should be moving shortly, fingers crossed, and have agreed £500 for removal men to take our stuff

It costs extra because they need to remove my fridge doors

I am going to do a HUGE food shop of heavy items, such as bottles and tins and jars, bags of rice and pasta, just all of the heavy shopping, as its a 2nd floor flat, no lift

Aibu to think that they would take that stuff? It would be in heavy duty shopping bags

Tia x

I don’t see the issue

pack tins into cardboard box, seal and mark as “heavy - kitchen”

Stravaig · 26/03/2025 12:59

I think it's easy to think that your specific heavy or bulky things are especially bizarre or annoying, but they won't be.

I have several dozen bricks that get boxed up (in multiple small book boxes) when I move. Old, hand-made, sea-tumbled, salvaged from corroded beach defences, used with planks for an improvised bookcase, and too gorgeous to part with while I figure out their next incarnation.

I've felt self-conscious about those. Forty kilos of rice, pffft!

I hope the move goes smoothly ~ happy home-warming 🪴🍾

Okay will do this, hoping my boxes are strong enough now 🙈

This is the bizarrest thread. I’ve read all your replies and you don’t seem to acknowledge that food deliveries will bring up the stairs to your front door so it’s a complete non-issue - you move in and arrange a delivery for that evening surely? I’m really not sure why you’re making extra work for yourself and the removals especially when they are so cheap!

Epidote · 26/03/2025 13:13

Look the contract. Pets and food are usually beyond the scope those contracts.

SeaBaseAlpha · 26/03/2025 13:15

Sainsbury’s delivery faq:

We will always deliver to the front door of your house or flat.

CarrieOnComplaining · 26/03/2025 13:16

Put it in boxes so they can’t see what it is

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 12:39

😭😭😭 I'm not trying to

But I admit, this moving business has made me very grateful for removal persons

And also stop with the tears emojis, ffs!!!

viques · 26/03/2025 13:19

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 12:50

😬

It's all non perishables

Pasta rice, tins, laundry detergent

Pasta and rice are very perishable. I give you the rice weevils.

Lovelysummerdays · 26/03/2025 13:19

I think the trick with food shopping is little and often. Get a pass for Tesco or wherever then shop up to your minimum limit I think £40 or £50 but a mix of expensive and cheap so it’s just a couple of crates worth. Delivery driver will take it upstairs for you, as faster, rather than knock and ask you to come and collect it at stair door. Then repeat every other day till fully stocked.

IMissSparkling · 26/03/2025 13:20

This sounds like a ridiculous plan and a load of extra hassle for both you and the movers. Just do the food shop after you move like a normal person.

Mydustymonstera · 26/03/2025 13:21

This is such a bizarre problem!!

online shopping. I’m on 3rd floor and Morrisons Sainsbury’s and Asda all deliver to my flat door.

Instinct1 · 26/03/2025 13:23

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 12:50

I grew up in a flat and remember my brother going downstairs for the food shop

I dunno, in my house now, they just bring it to the door - one time they brought it inside but it was so awkward, I wasn't sure what to say so just rambled about the weather

I live in a 3rd floor flat and have for over 15 years. We have a weekly Asda delivery but have had deliveries from all the supermarkets over the years. They ALL bring it up the stairs to the flat door. They have a trolley bumpy thing which moves up the stairs itself.

vickylou78 · 26/03/2025 13:24

Just do the food shopping after you move!! Ask the Tesco/Asda man to carry it in for you!

Am I the only one that thinks £500 to move what sounds like at least a two person households worth of stuff including white good and furniture is too good to be true? I'm sure there'll be a catch somewhere

It does seem ridiculously cheap. I’m assuming op is doing the packing and it’s a man and van type situation.

They will definitely add on extra £££’s though if they’ve priced on what op has now but they then have several additional trips up the stairs with a bulk order of groceries.

minnienono · 26/03/2025 13:30

is it even big enough? I did two runs from our two bed house to current house with our man and van service then a third run to pick up my stuff from my old former marital home. Not involving 10kg bags of rice.

as far as heavy ingredients are concerned, I’ve switched to 4kg brown basmati bags as local Sainsbury’s has it and I can’t carry any more!

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/03/2025 13:39

£500 for removal is cheap. On the other hand, if it’s a Luton van, possibly not. I think it’s pointless to buy a load of stuff and transport it. Apart from anything else, you’ll be busy sorting out furniture, bed, kitchen en stuff etc.

Get a delivery and bring it up to the flat in boxes. It’s always going to be an issue if you’re in a flat without a lift though.

But upthread you said tins and pastabake!

Why all the crying emojis OP???

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 26/03/2025 13:54

Boxes labelled "kitchen" yes, fine.
Bags, no.

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:57

It's a 2nd floor flat, with no lift, and I am a teeny and tired woman 😭

Then why do you need so much food?? 🤣

It’s very very cheap! Our cheapest move has been nearly 4x that.

prettyneededchill · 26/03/2025 13:57

PsychoHotSauce · 26/03/2025 12:45

Hold on, that's a bit unfair. I've just moved out of a first floor flat, really old building, with super steep, narrow, death-trap stairs. Lugging even 3 or 4 shopping bags up them involved clutching the bannister to help haul myself up and having a bit of a sit down when I got in, and I'm reasonably fit and young-ish! 10kg of rice would be pretty difficult... I've probably have to try and slide it up at an angle if it's in a box...?

10kg is lighter than most young toddlers! Women haul that around all the time…

Ilikeadrink14 · 26/03/2025 13:59

myplace · 26/03/2025 12:11

They quoted based on what they saw when they visited. If there’s more stuff than fits in the cupboards they may quibble.

Tesco usually come up a flight of stairs, I believe.

Tesco deliver to the door and I am on the 8th floor! There is a lift though! One day, a delivery lady carried my order all the way up the stairs because she wouldn’t use the lift. I felt sorry for her.

MiddlingMarch · 26/03/2025 14:01

When we last moved, the removal firm wouldn't move perishables - specifically food from the fridge or freezer, fruit or veg or bread. They did pack and move tins of food. It was in the contract.

They did, however, pack the bin with half full bin bag before DH or I realised. And tried to pack a cool bag of fridge food until I wrestled it out their hands.

Ilikeadrink14 · 26/03/2025 14:02

Also, if the stair situation is bad now, how will you cope as you age? Lifts do break down. Tears will get you nowhere then!
