Question about removal men - will they take my food shopping?

Changednameadviceneededxx · 26/03/2025 11:55

Just that really

I should be moving shortly, fingers crossed, and have agreed £500 for removal men to take our stuff

It costs extra because they need to remove my fridge doors

I am going to do a HUGE food shop of heavy items, such as bottles and tins and jars, bags of rice and pasta, just all of the heavy shopping, as its a 2nd floor flat, no lift

Aibu to think that they would take that stuff? It would be in heavy duty shopping bags

Tia x

£500?! You got a bargain!

I paid that 15 years ago for a man, his mate and a van.

My most recent move 6 months ago, I paid close to £2K. That was just for a simple move from one side of town to the other, and no packing service. That was out of a first floor flat and into a house.

I'm gonna call them 😬😬

But upthread you said tins and pastabake!

Why all the crying emojis OP???

Oh yes and pasta bake etc, but it won't perish for ages

They're laughing emojis!

is it even big enough? I did two runs from our two bed house to current house with our man and van service then a third run to pick up my stuff from my old former marital home. Not involving 10kg bags of rice.

as far as heavy ingredients are concerned, I’ve switched to 4kg brown basmati bags as local Sainsbury’s has it and I can’t carry any more!

A Luton van would be too small?

Fucking hell. 40kg of rice would probably take me years to go through!
Some of it may get manky with veewels as pps said... What a waste
Will you even fit into the flat😂

Normla people do it that they stock up bit by bit. So did I when I had to carry my stuff up to 4th floor. Simply grab this and that when wheopping and eventually you have nice stock🤷 Free exercise!

Then why do you need so much food?? 🤣

😄 I like to buy in bulk! This shopping should last for the rest of the year, and I'd only need to top up with meat and fresh and frozen ingredients

Although apparently rice isn't non perishable so now I'm stressed

Also, if the stair situation is bad now, how will you cope as you age? Lifts do break down. Tears will get you nowhere then!

I posted this thread truly curious about this smallish problem and now I have more problems

Ageing and rice weevils and the fact that apparently this 😭 emoji is not seen as laughter but crying

I don't know how I will cope with age but I'm 30s so hope not to worry about that for now!

😂 Cryong with laughter.
For future reference😂

this smallish problem
Sounds like 100kg + problem😂

Darkclothes · 26/03/2025 16:24

Can you still eat rice with weevils in it?

It's perfectly safe to eat the weevils, but there is a squeamish factor and a texture factor involved with doing so; as a result you may hear people suggesting to discard the rice and start over. 😱

I once bought rice from a bulk food shop, where you scoop the rice, flour, sugar etc into your own or their containers to reduce plastic waste. The rice had weevils in it. I threw it all away- never thought eating with the weevils in it was an option for added protein!

It's a 2nd floor flat, with no lift, and I am a teeny and tired woman 😭

Won't the delivery driver take it up the stairs ? You would probably need to ask your removers I suppose if it's all boxed up they would, but what about fresh food ?

Clarinet1 · 26/03/2025 16:32

I have lived in a second floor period conversion walk-up flat and used Tesco and Ocado regularly who both brought my (large-ish) online shops upstairs. If you’ve already got lots of rice perhaps pack that in a couple of boxes but hold off on the tins etc.
I am small and not in the best of health but can you really not manage, say, four or five tins up the stairs once or twice a week?

Who's eating rice with weevils in it? 😄😄

I will return two bags, can't cope at all at the thought of these weevils

How do they get in through, I wonder, as the bags are sealed

I think the trick with food shopping is little and often. Get a pass for Tesco or wherever then shop up to your minimum limit I think £40 or £50 but a mix of expensive and cheap so it’s just a couple of crates worth. Delivery driver will take it upstairs for you, as faster, rather than knock and ask you to come and collect it at stair door. Then repeat every other day till fully stocked.

It's £25 minimum with Morrisons. I pay for a delivery pass and get unlimited deliveries. I usually book two deliveries a week as standard, but have been known to do a top-up if I have forgotten something or DS eats the fridge in the middle of the night.

CarrieOnComplaining · 26/03/2025 16:46

OP, this is honestly truly bonkers.

So you buy this huge stock of 40Kg of rice and fill your nice new flat with pallets of tomatoes - at which point will you start to do top ups? When it is all gone and you order another massive bulk delivery? Which the delivery people will carry upstairs for you?

Or each time you use tin of tomatoes will you buy another to top up your stash? In which case the massive store is pointless because you are carrying the top up tins anyway.

Let's say I use 5 tins of tomatoes -
I'd replace them with 5 tins on my next shop, and put them towards the back of the cupboard

It will be far less heavy to carry, the same with rice

It works in my mind 😄

If you put the things in boxes they will.

Awakeatnite · 26/03/2025 18:31

Why would you do that. Get the food delivered to your new address

2024onwardsandup · 26/03/2025 18:32

My groceries always get delivered to my door when I was in a top floor flat
