Feeling very uncomfortable and almost violated after visit today by BT Engineer

DontGoChasinWaterfalls · 25/03/2025 16:10

I need a sense check and to realise I'm not overreacting.
BT engineer came today to upgrade my service to fibre optic broadband. He was late first of all which could've been accepted if he acknowledged he was late and apologised. He stepped into my house with his work boots on and I asked if he would mind wearing shoe covers as I have grey carpets. I'd never ask workmen to take shoes off and I provide the blue shoe coverings. He huffed and said he has to go in and out my house. Immediately I felt uncomfortable but explained I have a small child who sits and crawls on the carpet. He reluctantly agreed.
He somehow managed to jam the lock on my porch door by trying to leave it on the latch. After 15 minutes I managed to release it. He then tells me he needs a colleague to come to do something outside with the plyons and phrased it as "if it's after 2pm they won't bother coming". He eventually starts work after 40 minutes after faffing and I go upstairs to do some work.
5 minutes later I hear a panicked call asking if he could use my bathroom. Before I could say anything he was half way up the stairs. I froze and he directed himself to the bathroom. He was in there for 20 minutes and I was now downstairs feeling quite upset. Eventually he comes downstairs and doesn't say anything. I went upstairs to survey the damage and it was horrendous to say the least. To make things worse he rooted through my wardrobe to find the toilet paper.
I feel disgusted and sick..but feel like I'm overreacting as I don't know if he was unwell or has a medical condition.
He's got to come back tomorrow and I don't want him here.
aibu to call OpenReach to request another engineer???

I don't believe some of this. I can see you felt annoyed and things escalated but I think you're exaggerating. I've been raped before and violated isn't a workman using your toilet or accidentally temporarily jamming a door.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 25/03/2025 19:50

Nonsense - I’m almost tempted to say that the Poo Troll is back

I doubt if the Poo Troll ever left.

You'll have a job number. Contact the call centre and make a complaint about him.

Job! 💩 Tee hee.

Sorry, couldn't resist 😳

Yep this is becoming very clear….

I don't want to generalise but I think it may be a 'boy' problem, if this lad is quite young like OP says he's probably never cleaned a shitty skidmark in his life.

My nephew used to be like it, how my sister tolerates it I never know, I'd be dragging him back in to sort it out if he was mine, and I work in retail in a male industry and some of the blokes are fucking disgusting even though we have a toilet brush.

We call one guy Barry Shitstains.

TimetoPour · 25/03/2025 19:54

I would be pissed off with this too. Anyone visiting is free to use my bathroom but I do think it is incredibly rude to leave it a mess.

We had work men in a while back that used to arrive at 9.30 and by 9.35 the boss was in the toilet- every day. Shit stains and absolutely stinking. Not bothered to open a window or clean up. They also never washed their hands properly then dried them on the hand towel. Day 1 I was annoyed, day 2 I was fuming. Day 3, when he said he was going, I said no problem- I’ve left the stuff in there so you can clear up when you are done. He still went every day but did start cleaning up after himself.

As for going in your bedroom- what a cheek! I would ask for someone else too.

So a workman used your loo and left the bath mats crumpled and a bit of water on the floor. Honestly “violated” is such a ridiculous exaggeration I’m inclined not to take this post seriously. I don’t think he should have been rooting in your wardrobe but that’s about it.

Openreach are a disgrace. I'm glad the OP used the correct language of time slot, not appointment as some people do. No time slot is offered that excludes the school run, and my experience of them in business is that no-shows are frequent.

Ofcom of course do nothing about it, and I would be happy to see primary legislation to get acceptable standards from Openreach.

Personally I doubt the 20 minutes in the bathroom was for a poo. Not that you can prove it.

I’m trying to get into a discussion on Openreach, just offering some advice and help should it be required.

“I don’t want to generalise” - goes on to generalise.

I have 2 sons, one adult and one teenager. I don’t know how the adult lives in his own home but when he’s back here he leaves the bathroom as he finds it. My teenage son may leave his lotions and potions on the side but he leaves the place clean and ready for the next person.

Ok, asides from the slightly odd ins and outs of the OPs situation - how on earth are there this many people who thinks it's unacceptable for a workman to use their bathroom whilst doing work in their house??! What is wrong with you all? It's a toilet, it is literally made for shitting and pissing in. Then the wonders of modern plumbing whisk it all away. I can not even contemplate the insanity of being affronted that a tradesperson might need to relieve themselves whilst at work all day. Asking someone into your home to help you, then insisting they pack up work and run around trying to find a public loo instead of using the perfectly workable facility in your home. What the hell is wrong with you inhumane people???? (Some small level of understanding for the PP with OCD)

Totally agree. What is wrong with people. Try to imagine how he would feel having to ask to use your toilet . A basic human need and some would deny him that!

Rivertrudge · 25/03/2025 17:07

She’s said the wardrobe was open and the loo paper was visible. If he suddenly had diarrhoea and there wasn’t enough loo paper in the bathroom, what do you think he should have done?

This. It sounds like he was unfortunately caught short. Referring to yourself as being violated is a massive overreaction and an insult to those of us who have genuinely been sexually assaulted

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 25/03/2025 20:08

DontGoChasinWaterfalls · 25/03/2025 16:16

I feel like he violated my house.. I suppose is what I mean.

Ridiculous. You will hopefully never realise what violated actually means

AthWat · 25/03/2025 20:13

Redpeach · 25/03/2025 16:33

20 mins to do a shit? What's wrong with him?

He's on company time; that's quick, if anything.

Worriedgrandmasss · 25/03/2025 20:14

DontGoChasinWaterfalls · 25/03/2025 16:38

Absolutely not! There is plenty of bleach and cleaning products in the bathroom though!

And this is the answer …no loo brush so how do you clean skid marks ?I certainly wouldn’t be putting my hand down my loo or anyone else’s🤢

ProfessionalPirate · 25/03/2025 20:18

Knittingpasta · 25/03/2025 16:15

I have ASD and a phobia about non family members using the bathroom! I can lock the door from the outside so always do that if anyone is coming round then I just say someone is in there

How does that even work? Surely they would just wait for them to finish but then… nobody ever comes out?

SuspiciousChipmunk · 25/03/2025 20:19

Taking a 20 min dump in your house is disgusting. Call centre staff would get a talking to if they did that on shift.

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 20:26

twattydogshavetwattypeople · 25/03/2025 18:05

Then why would he pick a job that involves travel and visiting other people's homes?

Excellent point! Get a job where he is near a shitter all day! (Preferably working from home so he can stink out his own gaff!)

Have you ever worked in a call centre? Staff are treated appallingly. Do you really think it's ok to get a stern talking to for a normal bodily function?

Correction - not trying!

Doingmybestbut · 25/03/2025 20:46

I had a really weird open reach engineer once. Really confrontational and made a big thing about did we have a dog because he wouldn’t go into a house with a dog. We do not have a dog but I rather felt he was in the wrong job.

Doingmybestbut · 25/03/2025 20:47

I seem to remember you get a text asking you to rate the engineer?

researchers3 · 25/03/2025 20:57

RunLikeTheWild · 25/03/2025 17:02

he left the window wide open but still a horrendous smell, there was marks in the toilet bowl, the bathroom mats were crumpled up as he didn't bother straightening them up after finishing, water all over the floor and sink, towel crumpled up, air freshener knocked over. He's also very young so no doubt probably still lives at home and doesn't know how to tidy up after himself but just an assumption. @DontGoChasinWaterfalls

You just needed to straighten things up a bit?

Tbh I was expecting a lot worse, I imagined the walls and towels streaked with poo and vomit, blobs of excrement on the loo seat and floor, dirty pooey finger marks all along the walls etc

I must have lower standards as I find myself straightening up the bathroom often with young adult children and their friends in the house!

But no one enjoys having strangers and tradesmen in the house, and it's obviously extremely uncomfortable for you.
So it might be helpful to find it a technique to help you manage your anxiety and to realise nothing terrible comes from having trashmen in the house, that you are still safe and in control in your home.

Really? You really imagined shit all over the walls?

SpudsIlike13 · 25/03/2025 21:01

You sound a bit nuts! 🥜
