Feeling very uncomfortable and almost violated after visit today by BT Engineer

DontGoChasinWaterfalls · 25/03/2025 16:10

I need a sense check and to realise I'm not overreacting.
BT engineer came today to upgrade my service to fibre optic broadband. He was late first of all which could've been accepted if he acknowledged he was late and apologised. He stepped into my house with his work boots on and I asked if he would mind wearing shoe covers as I have grey carpets. I'd never ask workmen to take shoes off and I provide the blue shoe coverings. He huffed and said he has to go in and out my house. Immediately I felt uncomfortable but explained I have a small child who sits and crawls on the carpet. He reluctantly agreed.
He somehow managed to jam the lock on my porch door by trying to leave it on the latch. After 15 minutes I managed to release it. He then tells me he needs a colleague to come to do something outside with the plyons and phrased it as "if it's after 2pm they won't bother coming". He eventually starts work after 40 minutes after faffing and I go upstairs to do some work.
5 minutes later I hear a panicked call asking if he could use my bathroom. Before I could say anything he was half way up the stairs. I froze and he directed himself to the bathroom. He was in there for 20 minutes and I was now downstairs feeling quite upset. Eventually he comes downstairs and doesn't say anything. I went upstairs to survey the damage and it was horrendous to say the least. To make things worse he rooted through my wardrobe to find the toilet paper.
I feel disgusted and sick..but feel like I'm overreacting as I don't know if he was unwell or has a medical condition.
He's got to come back tomorrow and I don't want him here.
aibu to call OpenReach to request another engineer???

That is awful OP, definitely worth making a complaint x

I don't understand the toilet paper situation.

Are you saying that you didn't have any toilet paper in the bathroom, so the poor chap, caught short, needed to find some? It doesn't sound awful.

How did he leave the bathroom in a 'horrendous' state?

Poor chap 🙄

And it doesn’t take much imagination to work out the “horrendous situation” does it given it involves a toilet and a strange man having a shit!

EffinMagicFairy · 25/03/2025 17:42

Service engineers / trades are so worn down, they have time pressures placed on how many jobs they will clear in a day, jobs can take between 20mins to 4/5 hours, they turn up at house which has never been surveyed, internet packages have been sold by salespeople not knowing how it’s going to be installed, what wires already in place, etc, they never know what batshit or nice customers are going to greet them on the day, or whether customers will actually be in for appointed time, making them late for their follow on appts. Cleanliness in some houses is non existent, think hoarders, multiple pets with faeces not cleared up (inside and out) where they are expected to work. They never know what is behind that closed door when they first turn up. You’ve had a bad experience, by all means complain but sometimes working conditions in houses of general public aren’t great, they can be filthy along with rude arsey customers from the outset.

There was loo roll and spare in the bathroom- OP has explained all this. How was OP to know he’d go through the whole lot then rummage around in her bedroom.

What if she’d been in there naked? According to some on here that would probably have been fine too. Then off she goes to clean up all his shit. This site is so weird sometimes.

Wait he went through two rolls of loo roll?! I missed that bit. Jeez.

PrincessScarlett · 25/03/2025 17:48

I hate tradespeople using my loo but I do think you have overreacted saying you feel violated. He didn't rummage/root through your bedroom/wardrobe. He saw the open wardrobe with toilet paper on show and took it because he couldn't find any in the bathroom.

He may have cleaned up his skid marks if you had a toilet brush.

He should have apologised though. He's either extremely embarrassed or a complete pig.

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 17:48

Rivertrudge · 25/03/2025 17:04

If he had a sudden attack of diarrhoea and there wasn’t enough loo paper out, what would you have liked him to do?

Fuck off to the local public loo! Not do his rancid runs in MY loo! 😬

retirementislooming · 25/03/2025 17:49

Honestly, I wonder how some people get through life, reading about total non events like this.

He arrived 36 mins late (not hours). He needed a number 2. He saw spare paper and took it. End of story.

🙄

Letmecallyouback · 25/03/2025 17:49

I dread to think how some people cope in the real world.

This bloke had time to spend 20 minutes in the OP's shitter though.

Sort of blows your theory of them being 'pushed for time' out of the water somewhat.

mswales · 25/03/2025 17:52

How could he leave the toilet in a clean state if there was no toilet brush? What was the “damage” to the bathroom beyond the dirty toilet?

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 17:52

Letmecallyouback · 25/03/2025 17:49

I know right. What if the OP had told this man he can't use her toilet?

AmusedGoose · 25/03/2025 17:57

Your being unreasonable. Poor chap probably had a dodgy tummy. Most big companies constantly track engineer staff out in the field so he was probably stressed. Its difficult being in the field at the best of times never mind if you are ill. Also if you are so precious about your carpets I suggest you buy some plastic covering when trades come or at least put down mats. Although we put down a mat to protect our carpet from the baby's sick and dribble! Lighten up.

Delatron · 25/03/2025 17:58

I think people are missing the update - there was loo paper in the bathroom. There was more loo paper in the bathroom cabinet. Yet this man decides to go in to her bedroom and get more paper from her wardrobe. And not make any attempt to clean up after himself…

Rightsraptor · 25/03/2025 17:59

Good luck getting hold of Openreach: they're well known for being impossible to contact.

WTF was he doing rifling through the OP's wardrobe though? And why was he in her bedroom. She must absolutely report this.

LoveFridaynight · 25/03/2025 17:59

We had a carpenter round recently to do some work and he asked to use the toilet. It didn't occur to me to care. I certainly wouldn't have expected him to find a public toilet.
It wasn't left in a brilliant state but I just cleaned it. I couldn't get worked up about it.
He needed a shit, he didn't know you had extra toilet paper in the cabinet but had seen it in your bedroom.
No, he shouldn't have been rude and arrogant but he doesn't sound that terrible.

Exactly. He's an utter pig. Probably did all this deliberately. Vile.

FavouritePJs · 25/03/2025 17:21

was it BT or Openreach (assume Openreach)? I work for Openreach so feel free to DM me if you wish to raise a complaint. Sorry you’ve had such an awful experience.

I wonder if you can identify this workman from the time he showed up for this particular job? Thus ensuring he is advised not to attend the OP's house again, and hopefully, this incident will not affect his career adversely, for having the misfortune of needing the toilet whilst at work.

lazyarse123 · 25/03/2025 18:00

Ring your provider and complain. He's completely out of order.

Poppins21 · 25/03/2025 18:05

Rivertrudge · 25/03/2025 17:07

She’s said the wardrobe was open and the loo paper was visible. If he suddenly had diarrhoea and there wasn’t enough loo paper in the bathroom, what do you think he should have done?

Not gone into someone bedroom and taken toilet roll.

twattydogshavetwattypeople · 25/03/2025 18:05

Differentstarts · 25/03/2025 16:46

The poor bloke probably has some kind of medical condition. people are going to have to get a lot more tolerant of this over the next few years

Then why would he pick a job that involves travel and visiting other people's homes?

Chumbawomble · 25/03/2025 18:07

Repellent behaviour. I would definitely complain to Open Reach.

As an aside, some of their vans are driven very badly.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/03/2025 18:07

If this was a woman who had left shit in the toilet you'd all be calling her a dirty mare.

It's not the fact he used the toilet but left it in a state.

The way people stretch to absolve filthy fucking gits so long as they're men is disturbing. These aren't public toilets, he was in someone's home, where is the respect?

ohyesido · 25/03/2025 18:09

Shudders, I find it uncomfortable when workmen ask to use my toilet too. Oddly enough any women who visit my home never ask, only the blokes.

Marking territory perhaps

Onestepatatime18 · 25/03/2025 18:10

I agree this man was totally disrespectful & should have been more tolerant of house rules. As far as the walking on the carpets are concerned as long as people give their feet a good wipe on the mats & they haven't got wet mud on their shoes I dont ask trades people to remove them or issue them with plastic covers. They often have to be in & out of the house & it can become a nuisance taking them off & on when theyre rushed for time.As long as they do a good job I'm happy.
