Feeling very uncomfortable and almost violated after visit today by BT Engineer

I need a sense check and to realise I'm not overreacting.
BT engineer came today to upgrade my service to fibre optic broadband. He was late first of all which could've been accepted if he acknowledged he was late and apologised. He stepped into my house with his work boots on and I asked if he would mind wearing shoe covers as I have grey carpets. I'd never ask workmen to take shoes off and I provide the blue shoe coverings. He huffed and said he has to go in and out my house. Immediately I felt uncomfortable but explained I have a small child who sits and crawls on the carpet. He reluctantly agreed.
He somehow managed to jam the lock on my porch door by trying to leave it on the latch. After 15 minutes I managed to release it. He then tells me he needs a colleague to come to do something outside with the plyons and phrased it as "if it's after 2pm they won't bother coming". He eventually starts work after 40 minutes after faffing and I go upstairs to do some work.
5 minutes later I hear a panicked call asking if he could use my bathroom. Before I could say anything he was half way up the stairs. I froze and he directed himself to the bathroom. He was in there for 20 minutes and I was now downstairs feeling quite upset. Eventually he comes downstairs and doesn't say anything. I went upstairs to survey the damage and it was horrendous to say the least. To make things worse he rooted through my wardrobe to find the toilet paper.
I feel disgusted and sick..but feel like I'm overreacting as I don't know if he was unwell or has a medical condition.
He's got to come back tomorrow and I don't want him here.
aibu to call OpenReach to request another engineer???

It is not the use of the toilet . It is the disrespect of leaving it dirty and also going into her bedroom to find loo roll.

It’s absolutely mind blowing to me how someone with a working and convenient toilet would deny visitors using it? Why? It’s odd! I mean fair enough he left it in a mess and that was very rude but things like that don’t usually happen 🤯

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to refuse the use of my toilet to a guest in my house, tradesman or otherwise. It’s so paranoid and inhospitable to make someone go out of their way to find a public toilet when you have a perfectly serviceable one literal feet away 🤣 especially if they were desperate.

Mind you, people don’t answer their own doors on here so this shouldn’t surprise me 🤣

Guests are allowed to use my toilet.

Work people aren't.

It’s all that’s wrong in society , an individualistic I am alright jack. Isn’t it . These trades people are working, paying taxes, improving your lives and homes and yet some people can’t even offer basic decency to them. This thread has saddened me to be honest.

Aww.

I pay taxes too. Can I come shit in your loo?

kerstina · 28/03/2025 10:57

I think OPs feelings are valid but most workmen are respectful I have never had a messy bathroom of all the people working in my home over the years. I would hate if someone was sick in the bathroom as I would hate it but wouldn’t let my neurotics stop someone going in there. It’s just the posters who say they just don’t let them that I find sad.

user9632579 · 27/03/2025 22:43

Off you pop then.

It's not the customer's problem if a trades person needs the toilet.

You sound vile. I’m actually more disgusted with the attitude of some posters who clearly think a lowly tradesman is not worthy of using their precious toilet. Get a grip. We all crap.

Idc. I have OCD and I'm autistic. Never will I let them use my toilet again.

"Them" 🙄 You do know your guests and lowly trades people shit the same? Being autistic and having OCD are not an excuse for unkindness.

I have a 6 year old. She sits on the floor, crawls on her hands and knees, bum shuffles, rolls around on the floor, does roly polys, cartwheels... etc etc etc..

I wouldn't worry... Think about the school carpets and how kids all keep their school shoes on, then go and sit on the carpet 🤢 in the same shoes that have walked over wet school toilet floors, kids stood in dried dog muck on their walk to school etc... I'd just hoover once he'd left.

I think his customer service (or lack of!!) would have made me frustrated, but I'd just back off a bit tomorrow and pray for him to be done quickly!! Xx

Work people?
Nice attitude. Suppose they desperately need the loo. Would you be happy with them just shitting in a different room or on your lawn?
I suggest you don't have "work people* in your house with that attitude.

Chipsahoy · 28/03/2025 15:19

Well I understand you op. And I have been raped. 100s of times actually so I do know violation. I’d find this violating too.
im very very fussy about who comes in my home, probably because of my experience. Anyone I’m not comfortable with doesn’t get to stay.

greengreyblue · 28/03/2025 17:27

Violation takes all forms. Let’s not try to compare rape with other types of violation. We all know it’s not on the same level but violation is not binary, there are many shades .

Work people is not an insult and it’s better than workmen as it overs all genders. . Let go of your pearls.

My pearls? I'm not the one who has issues with people using my bathroom.

Lollipop81 · 28/03/2025 18:04

Well he could have had an attack of the runs so that I would forgive. But rooting around in your wardrobe!!!! WTAF, no that is going way too far. He should not have been doing that.

Bubbles90 · 28/03/2025 18:08

Report him and ask for another engineer. I wouldn't let him back in my house.

We had a British Gas engineer once who was really rude, late, in a rush and also did a horrendous dump in our loo. He had to go up in the loft and we could here him shouting and cussing (we had young children at the time). Whilst up there he dropped his phone/pager thingy down into the cavity wall, it was irretrievable and he tried to blame us.
Years later we had to have the downstairs skirting boards removed. Guess what we found?

no idea what you found, but i am 'invested' in your answer 🤔🙏

Tandora · 28/03/2025 18:13

You sound extremely uptight. What do you mean you “froze” when he asked to use the toilet? This all sounds very over the top.

IdaGlossop · 28/03/2025 18:23

So much for the classless society. I'm incredulous this attitude persists, 50+ years after my mother kept two special mugs for 'workmen' in one of the kitchen cupboards, probably because their workmen germs might infect us. I think of people who do work in my house as guests too.

Laura95167 · 28/03/2025 18:30

I mean he clearly needed to go urgently and a toilet is for pooing in. Not really sure what you could suggest his alternative was

Yes he should have asked for permission to use the toilet and sometimes when people need to go, then NEED to go. I was told that from a work colleague who had chron's, but equally they could have an onset of food poisoning requiring an emergency bowel evacuation.

No issue with using. Op had no issue with using. She had issue with leaving it in a mess and gou. Hi to her bedroom. RTFT
