As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

I am wondering how Americans are going to be treated this year when they holiday in Europe .I can't imagine that they will be that welcome in some countries considering the shit show that has ensued from electing such a plonker.

I know the Canadian attitude is so far, ‘we don’t hate Americans, we hate Trump’. But I don’t know about the various European nations. If I was Latvian, Polish, Danish or Finnish, I’d feel a certain way.

Ultimately, Americans with passports are rarely the problem.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/03/2025 20:35

Yes but one can’t blame Americans who are not active Trump supporters.

Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Labor is saying we should pause our visits.

”Like most bullies, the regime can be constrained only if everyone stands up to the bullying – including you.”

I think the majority of people who are the first to shout 'I’d never visit the USA while trump is in charge/it's so sexist/awful/dangerous/full of guns etc are also not people who have or would ever visit the USA.

Partner works there a few times a year and it won't stop any time soon, nothing will really change.

If you read the whole thread you will see that many have changed their plans and are not holidaying in the US this year or those of us who live in Canada, are no longer going over the border for our regular visits for shopping/lunch.

I believe it about the Canadian border, but honestly the UK is turning into an absolute shit hole and with the cost of living crisis, more people than ever can't afford holidays in American tourist destinations. I would put money on a lot of the people who are claiming they are cancelling because of trump, actually being tighter for cash than they want anybody to know.

People are basically entirely selfish and won't stop doing something they enjoy if there are no negative consequences for them. I will update in August and see if there's a shortage of tourists after next visit.

The other half of the equation is people who declare that they won't visit USA and have actually never been and only ever had the loosest want/intention to visit. I see lots of people suggest they will be boycotting and wonder how they can if they never went in the first place. It's like me threatening to stop shopping at DFS having never once bought a DFS sofa.

not sure you’ve read the thread. Plenty of people who could go, choosing not to, me included. Been several times, had a couple of trips in my head that I now just won’t do. It’s a pity as the kids will be too old in few years time but ce la vie

and it definitely is due to trump. I just think I would look at people differently and think, “ my god you really voted for this” and let’s face it if they believe all the Maga crap they just don’t like us. Touché

All you people talking about flying here, there and everywhere - are you exempt from the climate crisis or something?

I dont have a car and have never eaten meat, so I allow myself trips to see my family.

Fairyliz · 28/03/2025 07:14

I have a DC there at the moment. Given the packed plane it doesn’t appear that many people are giving up their holidays.

Screwyoutwat · 28/03/2025 07:14

No chance would I be visiting America now, not only with Trump in power but with so many Americans voting for him it doesn't seem like the sort of place I would want to spend my precious annual leave, add to it gun crimes - no thanks I will stay in Europe.

We live in Canada, close to the US border. We are no longer going over for shopping (use to go at least once a fortnight). Border crossings have dropped significantly.

Visit Canada everyone - we have everything you could want from a holiday!

Where in Canada? Any recommendations please x

My all time favourites are the Maritimes - New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia

Shakeoffyourchains · 28/03/2025 09:29

I've been critical of Trump online. That pretty much rules me out from being able to visit for the next 4 years....at the very least.

Not sure how we've arrived at a place where you're genuinely at less risk of being abducted and held by the Chinese government than the American, but here we are.

We've only done Ontario and Quebec, Toronto and Montreal. but I'd thoroughly recommend. Eat all the Poutine...

I'm not sure you read my response. It is easy to claim trump / guns / disagreement with policy are the reason when in truth the reasons are financial. More people are facing higher cost of living and do not like to admit they can no longer afford things that they once could. To save face, putting a political spin on why you won't be travelling is seen by some as far less embarrassing than admittimg that they are having to make financial cutbacks and no longer have the disposable income to make such trips. For a lot of families this won't be 'they can't afford to go' in the sense that they cannot financially cover the cost of the flights accomodation etc, but rather that the money is now needed elseware and other costs have had to take priority. It is not considered a financially sound idea to blow thousands of pounds on USA trips in the current economic climate, unless you have absolutely no financial concerns.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/03/2025 13:23

Or concerns about security.

My family usually take it in turns each year. They've been doing it since the 90s with Covid being the only exception. Not this year though. They've agreed that it's best for the UK side to stay away for the foreseeable future.

The UK isn't the only country swerving America atm, the USA tourism sector is looking at a decrease of 60 billion dollars in 2025.Shock

alittleprivacy · 28/03/2025 13:25

I have no immediate plans but suspect that I will be visiting in the next couple of years. All of the scaremongering about tourists being detained is just that. With the exception of the German man, Lucas Sielaff, every single detained and deported tourist and visa holder who has been all over the news, was in violation of the terms of the waiver programme or their visa. And Sielaff was detained because he made a mistake and gave the wrong information to the border guard. It was very unfortunate for him but if you tell the border guard that you are doing something that's illegal, it's not surprising that they will treat you like you are doing something illegal.

If you look at the advisory warnings that have been put out by the UK, Germany, etc, about travel to the US all they warn is to make sure you are travelling within the law and have your documentation. It's good advice. When you cross a border, you should be 100% sure that you have everything in order, you should know exactly what you are permitted to do in the country you are a guest in. And you should have practiced your answers to expected questions, especially if they will be asked in a language you are less familiar with. It's common sense.

@Parker231 We’d like to take a week-long trip to Canada in early summer -we were thinking about Quebec, as we’ve always wanted to visit-but do you think we should go to the areas you recommend instead? We’d also love to see Nova Scotia, but is a week long enough? We’re constrained time-wise as DS is going on a school trip and we need to be back when he returns. It’s our first vacation as a couple for nearly 20 years! 😂

JamSandwich27 · 28/03/2025 13:33

Quebec is a gorgeous city- my PIL live there. You could combine it with a visit to Montreal (my home). A week would work for the two cities and you can get the train between them.

Perhaps leave Nova Scotia for a separate trip and combine it with the other islands.

BruFord · 28/03/2025 13:53

Thanks @Parker231, that’s what I was thinking, we need longer for Nova Scotia-plus the kids would want to come.

We’re thinking of driving up, although I wonder whether we’d be better off not having a car with an American license plate right now …assuming we’re allowed to visit, who knows that might have happened by then. Ugh, what a mess.

If you’re doing Quebec and Montreal I wouldn’t bother with the car and the hassle of parking. It’s only about 3 hours on the train between the two cities and good flights in and out of the airports.
