As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

I've been a lot. Have close friends there and am going on a trip in April because it's non refundable.

However that will be it.

We were planning Seattle for a big anniversary next year but despite many past holidays in the US given the state of it, its off our list. And I'm pretty sure my life is real.

Hopefully many other people with decent ethics will do the same.

Oh that the poster who said people aren't going because they don't like Donald is either naive or as thick as mince. The death of a democracy sparked by a man who is close ally of Putin is hardly a mere dislike of a leader.

And just for shits and giggles our firm has decided to not quote on any US work. I'm sure others feel the same.

As you’re obviously making digs about the ethics of others, maybe if your ethics were so ‘decent’ you would write off what you’ve lost and not go this year. Your ‘decent ethics’ only apply if you won’t lose money though. Excellent. 😂🙄🙄

Pumpkincozynights · 25/03/2025 15:56

I’ve already booked, going to see family. I think that is different to just holidaying there.
I won’t be cancelling.

silverbirds · 25/03/2025 14:42

Living under a massive rock here and wondering why nobody is booking holidays to America?

Because I am brown and often mistaken for an illegal immigrant by very aggressive, often armed people. So is my sister who is an American citizen.

lifeturnsonadime · 25/03/2025 15:59

I think a lot of this is scaremongering and virtue signalling, it was the same at the start of his first administration.

We booked a holiday to the US earlier this year and haven't thought twice about not going.

I don't approve of many of Trumps politics but I can't imagine for a minute that me boycotting would make a scrap of difference either. Immigration to the USA has always been on the stricter side, so long as you follow the rules nothing is going to happen.

I do know that it isn't grammatically correct, but I dislike it when a tool comes on here to act like the grammar police.

You epic fail is just because you are you, not what you've written.

but why were you telling me your favourite word is tool?
I never mentioned grammar.

Why the US?

Why not? It's a large and very beautiful country.

BruFord · 25/03/2025 15:19

@LifeExperience That's interesting, were they afraid of not being able to renter the country, despite being American?

I went abroad two weeks ago and Passport Control seemed no different to last year when I last traveled. They took our photos, checked our passports and on we went. It took about a minute.

Obviously I wasn’t staring intently at the Visitor’s line, but people appeared to be moving through. I think it’s unlikely that most tourists would have a problem tbh.

Re. The Canadian actress. Something’s odd about that situation as she’d previously had a visa revoked (that’s what I’ve read anyway, could be untrue) so she was very unwise to try and renter the country. I don’t understand why she was arrested but surely most countries that had previously revoked your visa wouldn’t let you in? I don’t know what would happen in the UK, for example, if someone with a revoked visa attempted to enter. Would they also be arrested or just stuck on a plane right away?

Edited

No, it's more the fact that, like other countries, some people are going to keep their vacation money in the states. Though I am sure a lot will still travel OOC.

Many other countries are more amazing

raspberrykombucha · 25/03/2025 16:02

No, wouldn't go if you paid me. Would happily go to Europe and Canada.

Ethics are very flexible it seems, especially when it comes to money. LOL!

PerfectforStealth · 25/03/2025 16:02

I won’t be going, would not make any plans too. Apart from the safety concerns there is absolutely nothing in the least bit appealing about the US at the moment. It feels like no sacrifice not to go- it feels to me like the second Back to the Future film where Marty travels forward and his hometown has become this hideous vegas like hell hole full of self centred egotistic arseholes. I realise this is not all Americans by any stretch of the imagination but that is what springs to mind. So it is a no from me.

Many are, indeed. But we're choosing to go to the US this year 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are there not many many brown people in US?
Don't you just show your passport to prove you're not illegal immigrant or are you planning on illegally crossing the border?

HangryLilacGoose · 25/03/2025 16:06

Some people would have holidayed in Nazi Germany if it had a Disneyland.

People abusing you on the streets for being a 'dirty.Mexican' , as has hapoened to my very legal sister when Trump last came to power, don't .ask to look at your passports.
The white privilege.on this thread.🙄

varden · 25/03/2025 16:08

Many popular destinations have questionable leaders in charge and human rights abuses. It's largely ignored by tourists and instagrammers though.

There is another total megalomaniac in charge in Turkey, if you don't know already you should read up about Erdogan's push for absolute power also. And there's Orban in Hungary. Think about them when you're going to Budapest, Istanbul and the resorts.

So that's two countries with wannabe dictators. Add on Trump's America. There are many more but we know about North Korea already. What about the rest of them?

oh right, only you were saying it was you being aggressively asked by armed people which , given the topic, sounded very much like you had been abused by border force in some way.

Lentilweaver · 25/03/2025 16:14

Americans of East Asian origin attacked in the pandemic for " spreading Covid" should have just shown their passports to their attackers, of course. That would make everything fine!

@lunar1 I live in the US and I honestly think that you’d experience less racism here than you do in the UK. My friends are a mixed race couple (she’s white British, he’s African-American) and they say that their children have experienced more racism in the UK than here. It’s been a big factor in them deciding to settle in the US rather than the UK.

That's interesting my African American friends say its very much the opposite. Still, big places, I suppose it depends where you are & on economic position

I think you can add China, Hong Kong and most of the Middle East.

Then there was the recent tragedy in Dubai, but they don't respect women, so that's a problem.

I would not travel to Germany or any country that claims "misgendering" someone is a crime. People can "be" whomever they wish, but shouldn't expect me to go along with the delusion. Nor do I wish to be at a hotel and have a dud in the pool's Women's locker room changing with his itty bits hanging out. I would be arrested for explosive laughter and sarcasm overload.
