As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

Many popular destinations have questionable leaders in charge and human rights abuses. It's largely ignored by tourists and instagrammers though.

There is another total megalomaniac in charge in Turkey, if you don't know already you should read up about Erdogan's push for absolute power also. And there's Orban in Hungary. Think about them when you're going to Budapest, Istanbul and the resorts.

So that's two countries with wannabe dictators. Add on Trump's America. There are many more but we know about North Korea already. What about the rest of them?

There are two separate issues here. One is a boycott, which is an excellent way of expressing one's preferences and the other is the fear of being mistakenly imprisoned without trial by ICE.

One of the most off putting things for me is the sheer hubris. I get it that we are only seeing what a minority of the Country is projecting but it is so grossly unappealing. I work with the US and over the years I have noticed this change as well - a sense that they think they are always the smartest person in the room when in reality they rarely are. This to me is the Trump administration and their followers all over. I would hate to be be ensconced in that behaviour and would not pay to holiday there. Although maybe this is a reason to go - to see that actually most of the country is lovely but it just presents itself so unattractively on the global stage.

schnubbins · 25/03/2025 16:47

I lived in California for 6 years mid 00's .I have lots of friends there still but there is absolutely no way I am setting foot in that place in the near future . We visited the last time in 2016 just before the election and Trumps first term . The whole rhetoric around the elections and gun ownership was just so frightening .If I never went on holidays again .I wouldn't go there.

I do know that it isn't grammatically correct, but I dislike it when a tool comes on here to act like the grammar police.

You epic fail is just because you are you, not what you've written.

Being able to copy the dictionary doesn't mean you understand it.

You epic fail is just because you are you, not what you've written.

Some people might consider this a reportable personal attack, but I won't bother because I think your unpleasantness should stand.

p.s. I assume you mean't 'your' not you?

Tool.

lawpluslaw · 25/03/2025 17:30

Mightymoog · 25/03/2025 15:59

but why were you telling me your favourite word is tool?
I never mentioned grammar.

well the point is that I don't think the reactions are rational and justified, hence why I called it hysterical.
And i like the word hysterical

You told me a word you like. I told you one I like. I did not mention it being my favourite.

The grammar thing was just a helpful hint. Saying hence why is essentially saying therefore why, which you wouldn't (or shouldn't) do. If you're going to be condescending by coming on and calling a group of women discussing their concerns hysterical, you should be beyond reproach.

Have a nice evening

oh, I finally understand.
Your reply was so poorly written I didn't understand it.
Now I get it.
Yes, quite often I make a spelling mistake or will double up on words.

Is that why you were calling me a tool?
if so, do you not think that's a very unpleasant way of addressing someone?

Anyway, glad i finally figured out what you were trying to say,
enjoy the rest of your evening.

Feel free to pick apart any spelling/ punctuation because we all know that's the most important thing in a discussion

CJsGoldfish · 25/03/2025 20:45

There is so much defending of the indefensible. And denial.
Like many voters for the Leopards Eating Peoples Faces party, there will be a point where 'they' will feel the consequences 🤷‍♀️

Detention and removal of possessions etc is part of the 'Securing our Borders' EO. Moving from denying entry to detaining people 'to the maximum extent of the law'
Of course the implementation of the anti-immigration measures means an increase in actions such as investigating tech devices etc. More detainees, for any reason they can find (and there is absolutely no doubt how petty the orange twat is) is a win for the MAGA sycophants and anti immigrant isolationist folk. The only surprise is that now white folk aren't safe from being thrown in detention and are being denied the ability to return home instead

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/03/2025 22:54

YANBU @PeeJamas, many people, worldwide, are giving America a swerve atm. The USA is looking at a big hit to travel and tourism.

Not all of it due to boycotts. USA is becoming increasingly expensive and unstable as well as more hostile at immigration. Its just not worth it. Travellers can get less stress and more bang for their buck elsewhere.🤷‍♀️

helenafalco · 25/03/2025 23:10

I was in America over Christmas and New Year and was hoping to go back before my ESTA expires in late 2026 but am not going to bother the world is too big to put up with the shenanigans i have heard are going on with tourists, and too be fair I won't be going to Spain anytime soon either.

That's interesting my African American friends say its very much the opposite. Still, big places, I suppose it depends where you are & on economic position

@PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe Some parts of the US are very diverse and I’m sure that makes a big difference. My friend is from a medium-sized town in the Midlands and it’s been less comfortable there. I’m not sure exactly what’s happened, she’s just said that they’ve experienced racism.

Your anecdata probably isn’t as accurate as your Border figures. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/cross-border-trips-decline-235k-february-1.7485695

I generally don't pay much heed to LifeExperience since they described Frank Luntz (a Republican Party strategist) as a "left wing pollster" and Harris-Harvard (a centre or right-leaning pollster, depending on who you ask) as "extreme left".

Annajones101 · 26/03/2025 01:38

Oh look, more sanctimonious, ‘we’re better than you’ finger pointing from people on an increasingly irrelevant, on its way towards becoming a third world hellhole, small island towards the Americans.

I’m sure the American will be devastated at the loss of the people of this great nation not wanting to holiday in their country. If I were you OP, I’d worry more about living in a country that is in deep trouble, rather than passing judgement on people who ultimately run the world economy.

Lentilweaver · 26/03/2025 01:49

If we only talked about people who give a shit about us, we wouldn't tallk about anything. There are discussions daily on the royal family.Do you think they give a shit about us? We are still entitled to talk about them though.

lawpluslaw · 25/03/2025 14:41

The information he is alleged to have held is from a US lab. They are essentially alleging industrial espionage. It would be US authorities making the charges.

Your clearance level and administration/investigation is all done by the home country. You can provide proof/paperwork of clearance level. But ownership is held with your home country .

This would only be the case if the information was from your home country. I could accuse a US researcher of stealing something from the UK on entry, but the US would be under no obligation to investigate. It would be on the shoulders of the UK to make their case and request extradition if the subject didn't want to come voluntarily.

Edited

The information held might be from the US lab but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is of US origin.

The US, much like the UK are pretty savvy security wise. The scientist will only have had access to material and relevant areas which was suitable to the level of his clearance and national caveat.
So classification wise the highest caveat on it could be 2eyes (USFR). He would have had zero exposure to USEO stuff.

Not necessarily. It would be much easier, less costly, quicker and more sucessful approach for them (or anyone) to be sent back and allow the home country vetting agency to charge an individual with a security breach and violation of whatever the relevant act is in the home country.

Eg. Let's just say a UK individual did similar on something like Red Flag. It would get logged and they'd be sent back for NSV to essentially lead on the violation of the UK S Act.
Easier, quicker and less costly process.

Robinredd · 26/03/2025 02:22

I haven't been to the US in 10 years and I wasn't planning any trips but there's no way I would with Trump in office.

Freshstartyear25 · 26/03/2025 02:30

We have family in the US, FIL is having a big birthday in the summer and we’re already booked to go. I don’t care what anyone else does, I’ll still go as I please

Bazinga007 · 26/03/2025 02:34

We were looking at Disneyland California for 2026, but have now also looking at the possibility of Disneyland Tokyo instead.

beachcitygirl · 26/03/2025 02:48

I wouldn’t go near the US voluntarily at this point

DeepRoseFish · 26/03/2025 02:55

I will not go and may never go now. Fuck that.

BlondiePortz · 26/03/2025 03:17

Isn't Florida full of them?

2021x · 26/03/2025 03:56

In reality the only thing that has put me off is the the US reserves the right to download data off of your digital devices. That coupled with some stories about people with visa/green cards being arrested who have held anti-Trump views means that if I was to go I would make sure to take a dummy phone/laptop just in case.

SmoothEncounter · 26/03/2025 10:41

@Mightymoog the poster @lawpluslawis pointing out your grammatical errors delightfully. Your lack of comprehension does rather negate your previous declarations. Grin

Two things can be true at once. Why does our country have to be perfect to have valid criticisms of another country and how it’s being run? Bizarre.

Fancycheese · 26/03/2025 10:48

And OP, I won’t be going anywhere near the US while the orange buffoon and his administration are in power.
