As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

If I had a booked one I'd probably go, but no, I wouldn't book in foreseeable future on account of the current government, which is a shame because I love the states.

PinkPonyPugClub · 25/03/2025 12:04

I'm a US citizen and won't go back until the tangerine fever dream is over.

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2025 12:06

I do hear a lot of this talk so I think YANBU.

Politics aside the prices for holidays have really gone up lately and I know a lot of people who are having to reconsider what they can manage.

Boohoo76 · 25/03/2025 12:07

I’m booking for this summer today. I work for a U.S. company so boycotting the USA would be like shooting myself in the foot.

Parker231 · 25/03/2025 12:07

We live in Canada, close to the US border. We are no longer going over for shopping (use to go at least once a fortnight). Border crossings have dropped significantly.

Visit Canada everyone - we have everything you could want from a holiday!

Snorlaxo · 25/03/2025 12:08

I would assume that Canadian tourists not visiting would make a bigger difference and be more likely because of the tariffs and talk of making them the 51st state.

MsJinks · 25/03/2025 12:09

The US has always had what U.K. folk will perceive as stricter border force personnel - so I'm told. I was advised never to crack any joke with them or anything for instance. Saying that I've never been and never been really fussed whether I did or not.
Seems pointless saying I wouldn't go now, but despite that I went ahead and have said so to people and said it's because of the current administration - though more recently because my phone may not stand up to scrutiny of my opinions, plus today I see JD is not fond of Europe, and I'm not sure if some people/places may start to dislike Europeans.
However, this thread made me think and I have to own I always wanted to visit Russia (not after Ukraine war) and I don't admire their regime, I previously also wanted to see Syria (till the war!) but ditto so I'm not sure not approving of the admin is actually a real reason to not go to the US. It's possibly as it's weirder today when we don't 'approve' of the way the US is going, as it's so new perhaps, as it's a 'friend' being odd (under estimation imo) maybe, so we can't think of visiting as it's so shocking to us, whereas some other countries we may have or want to visit, with very different ideas of administration to us, have always been that way so it's not a disconcerting shift.
I don't know but I feel I don't want to go there anyway - so wouldn't for free at the minute.

I’m going to visit my sister who lives in the US with her American husband. My main anxiety is my fear of flying!

However, having read recently about people having problems with anti Trump comments on their phones, I’m going to make sure that I delete any funny video clips and jokes my friends send me that are anti Trump! I’ve seen sent quite a few this week which are very funny but I don’t thing US immigration will find them funny!

I wouldn't stress too much about your phone.

Again the media are omitting key details and facts.

To be in a position where CBP will ask to view your phone (You can say no) then you will have had to have been showing some sort of red flags and have something pop up on the system to get pulled into secondary.
They aren't just asking people at the desk or in the line.

Again, the media are using the phone bits as a reason whilst glossing over actual violations and red flags as to why the person was pulled in the first place.

Interestingly, this isn't new and has been happening for years. And the media funnily enough were 🤐 and didn't report this story (I'm guessing it didn't meet their agenda). But a UK citizen was denied entry to the US and sent home in Dec (Biden Administration) after photos found on his phone. He was initially flagged for travelling to the US for another trip so soon after a long trip and was questioned on that to ensure there was no Immigrant intent/desire to adjust status. They checked his phone and found photos of cannabis use (ironically from his previous trip to a state where it is legal). Cannabis is still federally illegal so he was sent packing.

MyIvyGrows · 25/03/2025 12:12

I did say this during his last term and ended up visiting twice. Feels slightly different now but I’m not in a financial position to visit any time soon so it’s a moot point.

lunar1 · 25/03/2025 12:12

I won’t be taking my mixed race family to America, absolutely not worth the risk of ICE deciding they don’t like the look of our family. There are plenty of places in the world to spend money.

GCAcademic · 25/03/2025 12:14

I'd planned to go to a couple of conferences next year for work. I don't intend to go now. I'll be using my research allowance elsewhere. I've never liked the immigration interrogation and won't be subjecting myself to an even more aggressive form of that, particularly as I'm not white.

Suzuki76 · 25/03/2025 11:32

Nah. The pull of New York city breaks and Disney/Universal in Florida isn't going away!

This.

I’m a Brit living in the US and my family & friends are visiting this year as normal. No one has changed their plans.

SunnyViper · 25/03/2025 12:17

I’m not going while the orange one is in charge.

Sortumn · 25/03/2025 12:17

If it makes Florida quieter (we don't do Disney anyway) then I'll be happy to visit.

theresapossuminthekitchen · 25/03/2025 12:21

I’m not ‘boycotting’ but I’m definitely not going to book a big expensive holiday to a place that is currently so unpredictable. We would want to visit National Parks mainly and they’ve just pulled thousands of jobs, so I’d not be confident that they’d be open/safely maintained, etc. I wouldn’t worry about immigration issues, although I’d be extra careful in filling everything out.

Thistooshallpass. · 25/03/2025 12:24

We were thinking of a US trip this summer - city and beach as a family of four. After the deplorable and unprofessional treatment of Zelensky in the Oval Office and Musks unhinged power we decided we were not going to give the lunatics any of our money .

Boohoo76 · 25/03/2025 12:07

I’m booking for this summer today. I work for a U.S. company so boycotting the USA would be like shooting myself in the foot.

I also work for a US company but seriously considering other options (I live in UK)

We do 1000s of lines and import goods and components from many countries - including China

Trump’s stupid tariffs are actually decimating my company’s business and putting 100s of his US citizens’ jobs in jeopardy

I have distant family there and have visited many times before, but am not planning any holidays there whilst he’s in charge. Plenty of other amazing places to go!

Sunli · 25/03/2025 12:24

I’m planning a visit for next year, it’s been on the wish list for years so still going to go ahead and book, and just make sure I fill in everything correctly etc

That one news report was incorrect. He was detained for possessing materials he had taken from a USA univrsity without permission.

So don't pack items stolen from a USA university and you should be fine.

Arcticrival · 25/03/2025 12:26

Makes me laugh. Don't go to the US then when Trump in in charge. I'm sure they don't care if you visit or not, all this vitriol towards him is fine but you seem to forget that over half the country voted for him to get into power. What we think doesn't really matter.

And visa talk -the woman arrested on the canadian border had been working despite not having a work visa. course she was arrested. If you have the correct ESTA/visa you have nothing to worry about

EvenLess · 25/03/2025 12:26

I had planned to visit this year to celebrate my cancer going into remission and to see friends (we lived there for a few years) but I'm feeling more and more uncomfortable about it, so think it's best left.

BarbedButterfly · 25/03/2025 12:29

We won't be going. My partner is very anti trump on social media so not worth the risk. Plus there are many other nice places to give our money to

Tooty78 · 25/03/2025 12:30

If you are a law abiding tourist who hasn't misrepresented their Esta (drugs etc), has no intention to illegally work or overstay and adjust status or if you are a law abiding lpr then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

I totally agree the media is scaremongering as usual.
Going through immigration isn't pleasant, the American staff seem particularly ill humoured more so than any other country we have travelled to.
My problem is I have lost my travelling mojo, and cannot muster the enthusiasm for holidays. If it does return, we will be going to the U.S.A. as it's our favourite destination and we have close friends that live there.

BarbedButterfly · 25/03/2025 12:30

Oh and only 32% voted for Trump, not half the country

MissyB1 · 25/03/2025 12:31

Ds school have cancelled their trip to New York this year, the email just said "after due consideration the decision has been taken...."

I'm relieved, and actually so is ds.
