As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

Mines booked and paid for this year 🤷‍♀️

I may reconsider booking another for a while.

Don’t really care what other decide to do

Lentilweaver · 25/03/2025 11:31

I have family there in a red state and was considering visiting but now am not. I am brown, and dont fancy a tussle with ICE over whether I am an illegal immigrant. Or being told to go back to Mexico. ( happened to my family members)

Suzuki76 · 25/03/2025 11:32

Nah. The pull of New York city breaks and Disney/Universal in Florida isn't going away!

SmoothEncounter · 25/03/2025 11:33

After reading the story of what happened to the Canadian actress over her visa, there is NO way in hell I’m going anywhere near the US. Locked up for 12 days, one phone call, held in chains. Appalling.

Qmalrg · 25/03/2025 11:34

I think overall, some people might just choose somewhere else. I mean you can have a fantastic holiday in Canada for example if you are after something that is like America.

But there are plenty of tourist destinations in the world, no actual need to go to America, especially if you have already been.

I think if I'd booked, I'd probably still go, but seeing as I haven't, then I would probably choose somewhere else.

Whatafustercluck · 25/03/2025 11:35

Lots of people with relatives in the US, so they'll continue to go. But we might choose to visit other countries instead for a while, or postpone plans to visit the US for a few years. Personally, I've always wanted to visit Canada 😜

Quite a few people I know are limiting as much as possible their use of American products and services (and yes, I know it's almost impossible to avoid them all). And I've just asked my pension provider to move my investments out of the US. Some people will sniff and roll their eyes, but a small act of rebellion makes me feel more in control. We've become too dependent on the US, as recent events have shown.

Decapitatedsausage · 25/03/2025 11:36

If I had already booked I wouldn’t cancel, but I have told our kids there’s no way I’m going to book anything there at the moment. I feel I would be hypocritical enjoying a holiday there when all I do is stare at the news and think WTF.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 25/03/2025 11:36

We have booked for this year and it is non refundable so are going. No way I’m going again with current administration in charge

Flamingirene · 25/03/2025 11:37

Go to Canada instead. I expect the US will have a tourist boom in 4 years when everyone who wanted to go will finally book their holidays 🤣 (like me)

I have just come back from Canada. I wouldn’t feel comfortable flying to the US right now. Immigration is a pita (it might be easier to do via Dublin though!)

OrigamiOwls · 25/03/2025 11:37

We were considering American for later on this year, but have chosen Canada instead.

LeggyLemur · 25/03/2025 11:37

I can't speak for others but I certainly won't be avoiding the US as a holiday destination at all.

I suspect lots of people will very visibly talk about boycotting the US but then won't actually do so and will have lots of justifications for why that's absolutely fine.

Flamingirene · 25/03/2025 11:38

You’ll love it @OrigamiOwls

CheckedChecker · 25/03/2025 11:38

I am American and I really don't want to visit until it stops being an authoritarian state. Also, I don't fancy bringing my English fiance over. We have discussed that we would probably need burner phones because I believe this administration will take retributive action against people who do not support Trump or his policies.

JHound · 25/03/2025 11:39

I think you are being unreasonable in expecting much difference. I really would be surprised to see any change in UK tourist numbers to the US. There are loads of British Laurence Fox types who don’t care about disrespect to the UK. They just love Trump because the “WOke mOB” apparently dislikes him.

JHound · 25/03/2025 11:40

Also it depends why people visit. A lot of people visit family and friends and won’t be willing to not see family due to the Orange Man and his arse lickers in power.

I think so too. We were going to move our (planned) 2026 trip to Disney World to 2029 - but might do 2030 instead to avoid the bump.

Snorlaxo · 25/03/2025 11:43

People will still go on their Disney holidays and do their sad faces in the news if denied entry because people think that it won’t happen to them and do things like carry drugs, not get travel insurance etc

Lentilweaver · 25/03/2025 11:44

I have asked my family- sister- to visit me here. Would rather spend my.money in a country that wants it.

Ohblahdeeiblahdoe · 25/03/2025 11:44

We've had fabulous holidays in the US in the past but I'm not going to give another penny of my money to that lot.

LeylaOfCircassia · 25/03/2025 11:50

Its never really been on my radar as a place to visit, other than if there was an ethical way to visit and learn about First Nations. The rest, has never really appealed. Whilst appreciating it is different, the things that might have appealed - Disney when kids were young, we can do in Paris, Las Vegas for a big birthday for DH who enjoys a casino, we went to Monte Carlo and would maybe do that. Outside of those things and having no family there I can leave it.

That said, I do have family in Turkey and I have continued going throughout the last 20 years but this last week or two have made me question whether I can for a while, so I do feel for those with family in the US.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 25/03/2025 11:50

If you are a law abiding tourist who hasn't misrepresented their Esta (drugs etc), has no intention to illegally work or overstay and adjust status or if you are a law abiding lpr then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

The media are revelling in the opportunity to cause fear and panic by omitting key details.

All of the cases to make mainstream media have had underlying issues (criminal, drugs, terrorism, unauthorised work, incorrect visa) that was in violation of section 8 of the INA and would make them inadmissible or deportable regardless of what president is in charge.

I have travelled extensively under Obama terms 1 and 2, Trump 1 and Biden. The worst experience I had was under Obama 1. Pulled straight after going through CBP and was questioned pretty strongly and had my suitcase emptied and gone through. Only thing of note I had in there was tea bags.
Ironically my best experience was through Trump 1. Slight paperwork mix up but sorted easily and let through without any bother.

Flamingirene · 25/03/2025 11:52

Thank you for your post. Always good to have balance @BigDecisionWorthIt

ginasevern · 25/03/2025 11:53

Do you mean avoid it as in boycott it for political/moral reasons or avoid it through fear of .... whatever. Quite frankly any tourist abiding by the law and just doing normal touristy things in the States is not going to get into trouble.

Ihateslugs · 25/03/2025 11:57

I’m going to visit my sister who lives in the US with her American husband. My main anxiety is my fear of flying!

However, having read recently about people having problems with anti Trump comments on their phones, I’m going to make sure that I delete any funny video clips and jokes my friends send me that are anti Trump! I’ve seen sent quite a few this week which are very funny but I don’t thing US immigration will find them funny!

strawlight · 25/03/2025 11:59

We have a bunch of big birthdays coming up next year and the plan was New York and Niagara Falls for 8 of us.

Took a vote the other day and 6 don’t want to set foot in the USA while that maniac is in charge. So we’re not.
