As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

Changed booking from USA to Canada last month. Really glad I did.

annapolis · 25/03/2025 12:33

It’s not just the border entry you have to be worried about. Two Canadian musicians had a worrisome encounter when pulled over by police in Ohio: https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7488950

I am not planning to go to the US anytime soon.

National parks in the US are an amazing experience to do a fly drive.

Cities are all much of a muchness to me.

I doubt whether Yellowstone, Yosemite, Arches or Bryce are going to be short of tourists and my guess is that the people saying they will not go to the US are the ones that would never have gone there anyway.

curious79 · 25/03/2025 12:36

Off there this Saturday
Fabulous place. Not everyone is nuts.

Raindropsandeardrops · 25/03/2025 12:37

I wouldn't cancel and lose the money but I would change it if that was an option and I wouldn't book to go.

We live in Canada, close to the US border. We are no longer going over for shopping (use to go at least once a fortnight). Border crossings have dropped significantly.

Visit Canada everyone - we have everything you could want from a holiday!

We are looking at Canada for our big adventure holiday next year. Our local travel agent is promoting Canada quite heavily and we are looking at a 14 to 16 day trip including going to see the bears salmon fishing. Any recommendations for other places to go in Canada especially for someone who loves photography, wildlife and the outdoors?

I can't speak for others but I certainly won't be avoiding the US as a holiday destination at all.

I suspect lots of people will very visibly talk about boycotting the US but then won't actually do so and will have lots of justifications for why that's absolutely fine.

Or they weren't going to the US in the first place. #emptygesture

If I had already booked I wouldn’t cancel, but I have told our kids there’s no way I’m going to book anything there at the moment. I feel I would be hypocritical enjoying a holiday there when all I do is stare at the news and think WTF.

We’ve booked first this year but we won’t go again. I really wish we could cancel but lose a lot of money.

It honestly doesn’t sound that worrying from the read through, they were driving while on the phone and distracted which was the reason for the pull over, when I lived abroad people would ask if I preferred there or the UK, I think it’s a fairly normal question people tend to ask jokey.

Dweetfidilove · 25/03/2025 12:42

I had cancelled plans to see my sister in Florida, but my daughter has been given an amazing educational opportunity hlin the summer, so I'll have to go.
This is in NY though, so keeping everything crossed I won't encounter any moronic behaviour. We'll stay within a small area.

varden · 25/03/2025 12:45

I'd say most Americans are feeling awful about what's happening. That's the sad thing.

In solidarity with them I won't go to the US until Trump and his successors (if similar) are gone. That's my gesture. I'm avoiding US goods where I can identify them, but it's not always possible to forensically examine everything I buy. But I'm trying.

Unless you have infirm relatives in the US whom you want to see, or have already booked and paid to go, I wouldn't set foot in the country voluntarily. I'd hope businesses do the same and have conferences etc. outside of the US. But money talks and bullshit walks so they might have to keep this up for the sake of mammon.

That's my take on it. Others will feel differently.

I've always wanted to go to Haida Gwaii, it looks incredible.

That looks right up our street, thank you x

Doitrightnow · 25/03/2025 12:48

We were considering the US for a holiday this year. We decided against it for various reasons but the current regime has put me off considering it again until Trump is gone.

U53rName · 25/03/2025 12:50

If you were alive in the 1930s/1940s, would you have gone on holiday to/put money into the German economy?

Ultravox · 25/03/2025 12:55

I’d planned to go to NYC for my 50th next year but definitely not going there now.
I think anyone visiting USA for a holiday (rather than visiting family or on business) sends the message that they tacitly support the Trump administration which I certainly do not.

Best place in the whole world for a holiday is the Canadian Maritime- Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Not a chance of me or my family visiting until the Tangerine Nightmare is over.

I'm glad my family are coming over to the UK this year.

If you are a law abiding tourist who hasn't misrepresented their Esta (drugs etc), has no intention to illegally work or overstay and adjust status or if you are a law abiding lpr then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

The media are revelling in the opportunity to cause fear and panic by omitting key details.

All of the cases to make mainstream media have had underlying issues (criminal, drugs, terrorism, unauthorised work, incorrect visa) that was in violation of section 8 of the INA and would make them inadmissible or deportable regardless of what president is in charge.

I have travelled extensively under Obama terms 1 and 2, Trump 1 and Biden. The worst experience I had was under Obama 1. Pulled straight after going through CBP and was questioned pretty strongly and had my suitcase emptied and gone through. Only thing of note I had in there was tea bags.
Ironically my best experience was through Trump 1. Slight paperwork mix up but sorted easily and let through without any bother.

I love the US, there is so much to see so we’ll continue to visit. We have travelled a lot and I’ve found Americans in general to be some of the most welcoming and friendly people in the world. Our friends moved there in 2018 and they love it. I’m sure some people will stop visiting but it’s got so much to offer in terms of holidays that people will always go there.

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 25/03/2025 12:58

Flamingirene · 25/03/2025 11:37

Go to Canada instead. I expect the US will have a tourist boom in 4 years when everyone who wanted to go will finally book their holidays 🤣 (like me)

I have just come back from Canada. I wouldn’t feel comfortable flying to the US right now. Immigration is a pita (it might be easier to do via Dublin though!)

I'm afraid it's naive to assume the States will simply return to "normal" in 4 years and all people have to do is wait it out.

Tigergirl80 · 25/03/2025 12:58

It’s not somewhere I’ve ever wanted to go tbh anyway. I would struggle with the long hall flight. If we did Disney dc with health conditions wouldn’t get much out of it because of the constant heat. Euro Disney was enough for them I would happily go there again. I would also be worried about safety with the gun laws. The annoying orange is one of many reasons I wouldn’t choose to go there I’m white British btw

to holiday there every year as I always have.
