As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

We went to florida last year and were talking about going again either 2026 or 2027 now that nintendo world is open at Universal. But we've decided to hold off, so yes, that is tourism money that we've decided to spend elsewhere.

The ESTA that I completed last year specifically stated they had the right to go through your phone and your social media channels - but I'm most worried by the fact that the foreign office have outright said that they believe the USA is at high risk of terrorism attacks

I would question whether any travel insurance would be valid for a trip to the USA, and therefore I wouldn't travel under those reasons.

Nah. The pull of New York city breaks and Disney/Universal in Florida isn't going away!

We love disney and were thinking of next going next year or 2027. After everything going on the US I will not be going until at least 2029 when trump is out (hopefully 😬)

the pull of Disney does not pull me enough to go over there right now and I hope other people will be the same.

People get denied entrance to Canada ad Mexico. They just don't advertise it.

‘Denied entry’ is very different to ‘shackled and detained without a phone call in a cold cell for days’. Admittedly they were always doing that to brown people. It’s news now they’re doing it to white people.

My Hispanic friend is going (pre-booked, only way to see her family) and is genuinely scared. She is Salvadoran (dual nationality) and doesn’t relish being deported there to a prison.

Apart from everything else, the administration is showing utter contempt for Europeans. Why give them money and support?

YourIcyReader · 25/03/2025 13:30

No I wouldn’t book to go just out of principle. Lots of other places to visit instead 🤷🏻‍♀️

ZebedeeDougalFlorence · 25/03/2025 13:33

I won't be going there any time soon.

All my American friends are keen to visit us in the UK.

uk border police have the right to go through your 'phone.
Most countries do
UK current terrorism level is "substantial" which menas an attack is likely.

Insurance is valid for the US.
I think maybe get off the Guardian and its ilk

Noperope · 25/03/2025 13:37

No, I wouldn't go right now. I saw this infomercial that is being shown in America right now. It reminds me of the type of thing you'd see played on repeat in an abandoned shopping mall in a dystopian movie. It's really scary what's happening over there right now and no one is doing anything as it's almost like they can't quite believe it.

Can I signal my virtue here too please? 👋🏻

I haven't booked a holiday to the US. But I just want to come on here to say that if I had done I would DEFINITELY cancel it because I want you all to know that I am a right thinking person and also that I fully support the current thing, and now I shall bask in the glow of my self satisfaction 🙌🏻

Nearly88 · 25/03/2025 13:38

100% we were planning this summer and cancelled, we'll be happier elsewhere

FrozzyBrain · 25/03/2025 13:39

I decided not to visit during Trump 1 and again won’t be going for as long as the orange maniac is in the White House.
The world is a big place. Plenty to explore outside the US.

strawlight · 25/03/2025 11:59

We have a bunch of big birthdays coming up next year and the plan was New York and Niagara Falls for 8 of us.

Took a vote the other day and 6 don’t want to set foot in the USA while that maniac is in charge. So we’re not.

Niagara is just as good from the Canadian side.

what was wrong with that?
Appeared to me to be like a ppb emphasising that they are cracking down on illegal immigrants.

I take it you approve of law breaking and entering a country illegally?

CranfordScones · 25/03/2025 13:43

I won't be going there. And I'm attempting to avoid buying American.

But I'll still order even the most trivial item from Amazon rather than incur a tiny inconvenience to my life. I'll then rationalise it with a virtue signalling post on social media about UK workers.

At a quick glance I thoughtthat said Nigeria is just as good from the Canadian side,
Was very geographically confused for a moment!

Donotwantnot · 25/03/2025 13:45

I’ve got two US trips booked for this year. Wonderful place, great people. You do you.

ButThisIsMyHappyFace · 25/03/2025 13:45

Is everyone who says they won’t go to the US on principle also excluding all other countries with questionable governments? That’s an awful lot of countries. If you’re restricting your holidays to fully democratic countries with a free and fair judiciary and low levels of corruption, that’s basically Western Europe, some of the Caribbean, Japan and Australia/NZ.

No holidays to Turkey, Egypt, the entire Arab world, most of Africa, most of Central and South America, almost the entirety of Asia… In fact, I hope none of you have ever been to those places because if you were fine with them but not with the new (loathsome) US administration, then you are a hypocrite. 🤷‍♀️

Of course they aren’t. They’re just mindlessly spitting out what MSM tells them. It’s the current trend to be pissy about. It will change.

I’d like to coin a new phrase, ‘vice signalling’. It’s when people signal that they are mean-spirited and sarcastic by criticising others who are trying to do good.

Coming onto a thread to tell people off for sharing how to stick it to Trump even if they are tiny tiny things, doesn’t make you some paragon, it makes you churlish.

Thecatatemyplants · 25/03/2025 13:47

I'm still going. Why on earth wouldn't I? If you would honestly not go somewhere purely because you think the current administration is crap, then I'd strongly suggest no one visit the UK either 🤣

I'll still be going as I love parts of the US, as do friends and family.

Imagining that cancelling your holiday makes you a moral crusader makes you a narcissist. Cheerio.

Overtheatlantic · 25/03/2025 13:47

I’m surprised by the Americans saying they won’t go back while trump is in office. That’s your country too, not just his. He’s a traitor. I’ll be damned if someone like that is going to keep me from my country. He can get to fuck.

caravela · 25/03/2025 13:48

I am an academic and meant to be going to give some guest lectures in September. It has been agreed and dates confirmed but nothing has yet been paid for.

I will now not be going. The chances of me (a middle aged white woman with an Anglo name) being detained or refused entry are very small, but the impact it would have is too great. Even the prospect of spending several hours waiting while someone rakes through my phone to see if they can dig up anything on me puts me off, even if they then let me in.

I feel bad for the people at university I was going to speak at, but for me it just isn't worth the risk or the stress worrying about it. Plus: it's only March and things have escalated rapidly. God knows how things will be by the autumn at this rate.

I’ve been to all those places. When I’m there I do home stays, buy local, talk to locals and spread the word. I distribute my cash carefully.

None of those countries is trying, with any level of realism, to be Nazi Germany in the 1930s. There is no imperial dream from any of them that is threatening Denmark and Canada FFS.

The case I know about was a woman from France who was detained in Mexico and held in Mexico, in a jail, for a few days before being deported back to France. So, I guess other countries use jail also if they are going to deport you.

You think they should be housed in a five-star hotel with room service?
