As per title really,

AIBU to think that the UK will avoid USA for holidays moving forwards?

  1. You are being unreasonable suggesting this
  2. You are not being unreasonable suggesting this. 😆

some Canadian colleagues are not going on a work trip out of principle. Luckily I have other reasons why I can’t attend. Certainly won’t be looking to book any personal trips there for the foreseeable.

Parker231 · 25/03/2025 12:55

Best place in the whole world for a holiday is the Canadian Maritime- Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

I’ve just googled those places and how stunning and especially good for photography. We’ll be going for sure 🙏 🇨🇦

curious79 · 25/03/2025 12:36

Off there this Saturday
Fabulous place. Not everyone is nuts.

It’s not fabulous with Trump as President. Are you not concerned about the recent data leak or what Trump is threatening us here in Canada or those living in Greenland.

BruFord · 25/03/2025 13:04

lunar1 · 25/03/2025 12:12

I won’t be taking my mixed race family to America, absolutely not worth the risk of ICE deciding they don’t like the look of our family. There are plenty of places in the world to spend money.

@lunar1 I live in the US and I honestly think that you’d experience less racism here than you do in the UK. My friends are a mixed race couple (she’s white British, he’s African-American) and they say that their children have experienced more racism in the UK than here. It’s been a big factor in them deciding to settle in the US rather than the UK.

Snippit · 25/03/2025 13:05

Lentilweaver · 25/03/2025 11:31

I have family there in a red state and was considering visiting but now am not. I am brown, and dont fancy a tussle with ICE over whether I am an illegal immigrant. Or being told to go back to Mexico. ( happened to my family members)

Edited

That is truly awful 🥺

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/03/2025 13:05

I'm booked and paid to go, first time with my family. It didn't occur to me to worry about it. If I was to avoid any place that has different political views to me I'd never go anywhere. The fact is around half the people in the US absolutely hate the current President and regime so it's probably more acceptable to be critical and discuss openly now than in any other time in history. I found Americans I met in my life to be very nationalistic and often blindly loyal but that has changed and there is more critical thinking. In a way it's no harm.

JHound · 25/03/2025 13:06

BigDecisionWorthIt · 25/03/2025 11:50

If you are a law abiding tourist who hasn't misrepresented their Esta (drugs etc), has no intention to illegally work or overstay and adjust status or if you are a law abiding lpr then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

The media are revelling in the opportunity to cause fear and panic by omitting key details.

All of the cases to make mainstream media have had underlying issues (criminal, drugs, terrorism, unauthorised work, incorrect visa) that was in violation of section 8 of the INA and would make them inadmissible or deportable regardless of what president is in charge.

I have travelled extensively under Obama terms 1 and 2, Trump 1 and Biden. The worst experience I had was under Obama 1. Pulled straight after going through CBP and was questioned pretty strongly and had my suitcase emptied and gone through. Only thing of note I had in there was tea bags.
Ironically my best experience was through Trump 1. Slight paperwork mix up but sorted easily and let through without any bother.

I don’t think that’s OP’s concern is it?

Snippit · 25/03/2025 13:06

SmoothEncounter · 25/03/2025 11:33

After reading the story of what happened to the Canadian actress over her visa, there is NO way in hell I’m going anywhere near the US. Locked up for 12 days, one phone call, held in chains. Appalling.

W.T.F, 😳

CointreauVersial · 25/03/2025 13:10

I don't think it matters overmuch if you are just a tourist. However, the fact that it is so ridiculously expensive right now (food, hotels etc) is what puts me off.

DD1's BF is a US citizen, and lives in Florida. DD1 holidays there, but she spent a year studying/living in the US, and will not live there again permanently for love or money. Tightening immigration rules (on both sides) mean that they are unlikely to have a future together anyway.

Snippit · 25/03/2025 13:10

CheckedChecker · 25/03/2025 11:38

I am American and I really don't want to visit until it stops being an authoritarian state. Also, I don't fancy bringing my English fiance over. We have discussed that we would probably need burner phones because I believe this administration will take retributive action against people who do not support Trump or his policies.

This is so sad, no longer a land of the free.
My husband is going to watch a PGA golf tournament, I really don’t want him to go with agent orange on the throne, 🤦‍♀️🥴

PrettyDetails · 25/03/2025 13:11

BarbedButterfly · 25/03/2025 12:30

Oh and only 32% voted for Trump, not half the country

Just like only 33% voted for Labour.

Doingmybestbut · 25/03/2025 13:11

EvilNextDoor · 25/03/2025 11:30

Mines booked and paid for this year 🤷‍♀️

I may reconsider booking another for a while.

Don’t really care what other decide to do

Same.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 25/03/2025 12:10

I wouldn't stress too much about your phone.

Again the media are omitting key details and facts.

To be in a position where CBP will ask to view your phone (You can say no) then you will have had to have been showing some sort of red flags and have something pop up on the system to get pulled into secondary.
They aren't just asking people at the desk or in the line.

Again, the media are using the phone bits as a reason whilst glossing over actual violations and red flags as to why the person was pulled in the first place.

Interestingly, this isn't new and has been happening for years. And the media funnily enough were 🤐 and didn't report this story (I'm guessing it didn't meet their agenda). But a UK citizen was denied entry to the US and sent home in Dec (Biden Administration) after photos found on his phone. He was initially flagged for travelling to the US for another trip so soon after a long trip and was questioned on that to ensure there was no Immigrant intent/desire to adjust status. They checked his phone and found photos of cannabis use (ironically from his previous trip to a state where it is legal). Cannabis is still federally illegal so he was sent packing.

People get denied entrance to Canada ad Mexico. They just don't advertise it.

NagathaCrispy · 25/03/2025 13:14

I'm another one with relatives resident in the US. They would love me to visit, but I'm not keen, so I will meet them for a catch up while they are on holiday in Europe over the summer. I definitely will not be looking at the US as a holiday destination any time soon.

Whatafustercluck · 25/03/2025 13:18

U53rName · 25/03/2025 12:50

If you were alive in the 1930s/1940s, would you have gone on holiday to/put money into the German economy?

If you're drawing similarities between today's US administration and the rise of the Nazis in 1930s/40s Germany, then you're absolutely spot on. I was commenting earlier on another thread that Goebbels has nothing on Trump and JD Vance.

Mightymoog · 25/03/2025 13:20

BarbedButterfly · 25/03/2025 12:29

We won't be going. My partner is very anti trump on social media so not worth the risk. Plus there are many other nice places to give our money to

do you really think they are stopping every person at security and looking through their 'phone.
Or doing random checks?
Really? You can't see that that is very very unlikely.

Cookerhood · 25/03/2025 13:21

I won't be going while the orange one is in charge. Why would you when there are so many other places in the world? All my Canadian friends have cancelled their US trips.
I plan to go to Canada this year or next.

Mightymoog · 25/03/2025 13:22

@Lentilweaver what were the circumstances of your family being told to go home? Told by who?

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 25/03/2025 13:23

I love the US, some stunning scenery and the people we've met have been lovely.
We're going back this summer and looking again for 2027

Sunli · 25/03/2025 12:42

It honestly doesn’t sound that worrying from the read through, they were driving while on the phone and distracted which was the reason for the pull over, when I lived abroad people would ask if I preferred there or the UK, I think it’s a fairly normal question people tend to ask jokey.

Full disclosure, I live in Canada about 2 hours from the border. It used to be taken in a jokey way but not anymore.

When Trump first talked about making Canada a 51st state it was met with eye rolls. It certainly isn’t anymore.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 25/03/2025 13:23

annapolis · 25/03/2025 12:33

It’s not just the border entry you have to be worried about. Two Canadian musicians had a worrisome encounter when pulled over by police in Ohio: https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7488950

I am not planning to go to the US anytime soon.

Don't drive distracted, don't text and drive and watch where you are going. Easy-peasy for folks with a normal IQ. 😆

Lordofmyflies · 25/03/2025 13:27

We wont be going to the US whilst the orange man is in charge. We went in December to experience Christmas in NYC which was magical but it is ridiculously expensive now. The cost, paired with the lunacy, has changed our opinion for the next few years. The world is a big place and there's plenty else to see.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/03/2025 13:29

I’d still go to visit a sister, but she lives in a very blue, east coast state. I wouldn’t go otherwise.

The country I certainly would boycott at the moment is Turkey.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 25/03/2025 13:30

Had to cancel my US holiday in February for personal reasons. Hoping to rebook soon for next year. Have no fears of travelling there and love the US.
