To knock on a door at 7am on a Sunday

Hi

My cat has been missing since yesterday evening and I’ve just found him up an incredibly tall tree up the road. I’ll contact an emergency tree surgeon asap. How early is it reasonable to knock on a neighbours door on a Sunday? AIBU to knock at 7am? They live a few doors up so I’ve never met them

My friend who is a fireman who gets cat up tree calls all the time said there’s a reason you don’t see cat skeletons in trees. They usually get themselves down. That said if it was my very non savvy, slightly overweight ragdoll mix up there I’d be calling someone. Not a tree surgeon though, probably a roofer or window cleaner who has very tall ladders and would do me a favour on a Sunday. Tree surgeon isn’t really needed.

answer to question I would say 9am

You think they would do a 7am call out on a Sunday as a favour? As in no payment?

Sweetlikeblueberries · 23/03/2025 07:59

NOW can we have a picture? I think it’s against Mumsnet rules to post a thread about a cat without picture of said cat

Picture of cat in the tree early hours of this morning as requested…

10 at the earlier. Cold calling anyone at 7am, on any day of the week is crazy.

Go stand under the tree with your cat's favourite food. Unless he was flown up by an eagle, he got up there, he can get down.

Edited

Sadly that’s not necessarily true. Going up is much easier than down, and he’s probably terrified to move.

And now he’s curled up with his sister

What beautiful cats! I am glad he is home and safe ❤️

Call the fire service not a tree surgeon - tree might be protected

So glad you found your cat ❤️

Many fire services will not rescue cats from trees now as it’s a strain on their limited resources! In my experience most cats will get themselves down after a while!

WinterFrogs · 23/03/2025 08:06

I am truly surprised at the number of people who would be unhappy at a knock on the door on a Sunday.

Very cute. How did he get down? Rescue or by daredevil encourage by food?

I'm not.

I'm glad the cat is now home and thank you OP for updating with a photo.

MolluscMonday · 23/03/2025 08:11

I know this cat is down now, but to others- please don’t call the fire brigade out for this, especially not at the end of a potentially hectic night shift! As someone said earlier- you never see dead cats up trees! Just open tuna and leave it at the bottom.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 23/03/2025 08:13

10am. I'm still in bed at 9am on a Sunday. Unless my house was on fire, I wouldn't appreciate strangers (or anyone) coming around.

At least the fire brigade would already be on their way ;-)

Thursdaywatchthewalls · 23/03/2025 08:16

So glad he’s down OP. It’s a worry when they don’t come home. Tuna works for most things here.
Very cute photo, do you think he’s dreaming about his adventure.
i wouldn’t have minded you knocking but I also wouldn’t have minded you doing what you need to do in the garden without asking.

Boredlass · 23/03/2025 08:16

Sunday is just another day. They might be up because they’re working. I wouldn’t care if you knocked at that time

luckylavender · 23/03/2025 08:20

CatRescueNeeded · 23/03/2025 05:54

Yes, it’s in their garden so will need to speak to them before a tree surgeon hopefully turns up

ok, I’ll wait until at least 8 then. Poor cat sounds so scared!

cat is aboit 3 storeys up - a ladder isn’t going to do it!

8 still too early & Fire Brigade not tree surgeon

TweezerMay · 23/03/2025 08:24

Aww what beautiful cats. So glad he managed to figure it out. What a stress for you!

Trendyname · 23/03/2025 08:31

CatRescueNeeded · 23/03/2025 06:00

I know it wants to come down by the heartbreaking noise it’s making, plus he’s never out of the house for more than a couple of hours (and never overnight)

I think it's emergency for you. It's not end of world for neighbour if they wake up early to help a distressed living being. What would you do if there was a child involved?

Trendyname · 23/03/2025 08:33

Just read your update that he is back home safe. Great news.

AlteredStater · 23/03/2025 08:46

LuckysDadsHat · 23/03/2025 06:00

The fire service won't come out for this, unless a danger to human life. A tree surgeon will climb the tree safely and get the cat out. They are not going to cut down the tree.

Edit to remove as cat safely found!

llovemermaidgin · 23/03/2025 08:47

There are arseholes on MN, there are peeps that want to help and then there are those who love the drama.
It was a worrying time for you OP, but sometimes the simplest answer to a problem is so obvious you don't consider it. In the case of animals, usually food.
So glad your boy is safe and back with his sister. Gorgeous cats😍

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 23/03/2025 08:47

I wouldn't answer the door if someone knocked at 7am!

Only when the curtains are open and it's an acceptable time (9am?) would I go round to a neighbours if I knew them. Probably later if we'd never spoken.

LollyLand · 23/03/2025 08:49

No way! I wouldn’t be answering and I’d tell you to piss off if it was over a cat.

7am on a Sunday will have people thinking it’s an emergency.
