To knock on a door at 7am on a Sunday

Hi

My cat has been missing since yesterday evening and I’ve just found him up an incredibly tall tree up the road. I’ll contact an emergency tree surgeon asap. How early is it reasonable to knock on a neighbours door on a Sunday? AIBU to knock at 7am? They live a few doors up so I’ve never met them

I can't believe posters think the tree surgeon would cut the tree down with the cat in it although I suppose if they started to the cat would probably descend extremely quickly. Tree surgeons can climb up to retrieve the cat.

Thought fire service dont turn out for cat rescues these days

Ah I hadn’t realised !

Sparkle123r · 23/03/2025 06:46

If you knocked on my door at 7am on a Sunday, without it being an emergency with threat to human life then I would be fuming. My husband and I work 6/7 days a week and it's rare that we have a Sunday morning where we don't need to get up. You don't know your neighbours or their lifestyle.

You know where the cat is, go back in a few hours. In reality the cat is unlikely to be stuck, and just needs encouragement.

Equinoxkombucha · 23/03/2025 06:47

Your Cat has survived all these hours perfectly fine. Wait until 9am before approaching your neighbours. What do you expect them to do anyway? It will probably cause the cat more stress if it has people gawping at it and cooing at it trying to coax it down. Put out the stinky tuna and see if it comes down on its own and if not call a tree surgeon.

Why do you want a tree surgeon? Why are you knocking for neighbours? Cats usually come down on their own after a bit. Your best option would be to put a ladder or even just big branches against the tree to make an easier exit and lure the cat back down with food.

This isn’t correct. They often get stuck for days at a time.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 23/03/2025 06:55

For those wanting a picture because 'catsxare cute'
Go to insta/youtube or the myriad os social media sites with endless bloody cat videos.
Andxas for the rationale that a picture mmay aid several thousand harassed mothers to offer advice on the best way to get the cat down...
Really? That's the best excuse you have for nosiness?

Startinganew32 · 23/03/2025 06:56

Not everyone is a horrible twat - I’d have no issue at all if you knocked on my door early for this. Although they probably can’t do much to help. At least try the local fire station (not 999 obviously) to see if they might help.

I’m not commenting on the timing, but cats do get stuck up trees and often do not come down by themselves.

Cays come down on their own. You just have to be patient. The cat is fine.

10 at the earliest, unless they show movement.

Cook some fish on the stove, keep it warm in a dish, with a lid, wait til you near the tree, let cat smell fish. Leave dish on floor and everyone bugger off.

Cat will get down. Eventually.

Cat will get down. Eventually.

Actually, often not. A misconception.

I agree, I wouldn’t mind.

Oh shut up you miserable git 😆

lunar1 · 23/03/2025 06:58

You could knock on my food at 3am for a distressed animal and I’d come out and help!

Wow. Charming. Your parents must be so proud.

Thanks all. Leaving a ladder propped against the tree with some food at the bottom worked - he just came in

10 at the earliest unless you see movement. I'd be a tad peeved at someone asking a favour at 7am on a Sunday morning.
Day of rest and all that!

Or put a note in the door or text.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 23/03/2025 07:02

Surely the tree surgeon would t get there until after 9 anyway?

That’s sad when it’s for an animal in distress.

Cross posted. Glad you've got him.

sashh · 23/03/2025 07:02

I would prefer to be woken up than wake up to someone putting a ladder up to a tree.

But then I am a cat slave. I got up at midnight to let madam in (There is an open window so she can come and go).

Rule of thumb - is there a light on?

AltitudeCheck · 23/03/2025 07:03

Please update us!

I agree, pop a note through the door explaining and why you are in their garden and ask them to give you a text / call when they're awake. I expect most people are actually awake far earlier than 9am, just perhaps not dressed and ready to open the door but happy to send a quick message. I'd rather be woken by a note coming through the letter box than by finding a tree surgeon in my garden!

Cats are masters of the pitiful wail, they regularly convince people that they are homeless waifs that haven't been fed in days (despite scoffing 3 meals a day and living a comfortable existance at home!)

Know that whatever you do you cat will probably come down of its own accord but only after you've made a huge fuss, involved the FB and half your street and spent a fortune on emergency tree surgeons will it saunter back down the way it came like it does this every day, turn its nose up at the tuna/ fish you've been waving about, walk straight past you and go back home for a long sleep! Because.... well, cats!

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 23/03/2025 07:03

Good news OP.

Now wait for another million posts offering you advice 😄

SkylarkKitten · 23/03/2025 07:07

I am inclined to agree that the cat will come down by itself. My one eyed cat (1 years old) sits in our elder tree (around 16-20ft) watching the world go by. To come down, he climbs across branches until he find the trunk, then either climbs down backwards, or runs straight down it.

EDITED
I knew the cat would come down after I'd typed a long post of advice. How very Cat 😂
