To knock on a door at 7am on a Sunday

Hi

My cat has been missing since yesterday evening and I’ve just found him up an incredibly tall tree up the road. I’ll contact an emergency tree surgeon asap. How early is it reasonable to knock on a neighbours door on a Sunday? AIBU to knock at 7am? They live a few doors up so I’ve never met them

So pleased to hear he is safely home. We have a huge tree in our garden and wouldn’t have minded a 7am visit, one of us is always up at 6am to tend to our dogs.

Call the fire service not a tree surgeon - tree might be protected

So glad you found your cat ❤️

Fire service won't help. Tree surgeon won't take the tree down, just climb it 😂

llovemermaidgin · 23/03/2025 08:50

For future reference,OP don't bother knocking a front door at anytime of the day on any day. If an MNer lives there they probably won't answer anyway no matter what their home situation and a 6'6" rugby playing spouse to hand.🙄

Overtheatlantic · 23/03/2025 08:50

I’m so glad he’s home safely. I would have answered the door and helped with the ladder!

brettsalanger · 23/03/2025 08:52

does the fire brigade really come out for cats up a tree. I thought that was just a Fireman Sam type story!

our house would be fine with a 7am knock, but it’s far to early for the majority. I would pop a letter through for them

My friend who is a fireman who gets cat up tree calls all the time said there’s a reason you don’t see cat skeletons in trees. They usually get themselves down. That said if it was my very non savvy, slightly overweight ragdoll mix up there I’d be calling someone. Not a tree surgeon though, probably a roofer or window cleaner who has very tall ladders and would do me a favour on a Sunday. Tree surgeon isn’t really needed.

answer to question I would say 9am

That made me laugh. My brother is a firefighter and the cat skeleton is always his response to rescue requests too.

Unless ofcourse my brother is your friend - interesting plot twist 😂

Ah sorry - fair enough - didn’t realise this at first 😭

curious79 · 23/03/2025 08:53

Wait until 12. See if the cat comes down.
As I understand it, the fire brigade don’t want to be pestered by pet incidents these days.
You should try and call local RSPCA

BeTwinklyKhakiPanda · 23/03/2025 08:53

For this, I'd be okay with 7am. Glad to see he's safe.

Thanks all. Leaving a ladder propped against the tree with some food at the bottom worked - he just came in

They're little buggers, aren't they 😂

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 23/03/2025 08:56

It’s always an orange cat! They are so bad!

pleased he’s safe.

FWIW I’d have knocked at 7am if needed for my cat…. Not my dp or first born… but definitely the cat 🤣

9am is socially acceptable.
8am if there's actual danger.
7am is not acceptable and you don't need a tree surgeon.

"Stuck up a tree" cats are not really stuck 9 times out of 10. How sure are you that it wants to come down. Have you tried opening a tin of tuna nearby?

Yeah this. ^ Several years ago, DH was flapping about in the kitchen and saying that our cat (13-14 at the time) was 'stuck' on the garage roof. I said she will be fine, she got up so she can get down. He didn't listen (because men know better!)

Cue a scream 2 minutes later. DH had gone to 'rescue' said kitty, and had tumbled down a small hill in our garden whilst going behind the garage with a CHAIR to try to stand on to get her, and he banged his head. Spent half the day in A & E (10 hours!) and he lost 2 days pay from work, as they kept him in for observation.

And.... kitty hopped off the garage roof, by jumping on the wheelie bin, and then onto the ground from there. 🙄😆

SO glad your cat is down now.

How did you get him down @CatRescueNeeded Did he come down by himself?! Did he come down the ladder? Did you need to talk to the neighbour?

Wow. Charming. Your parents must be so proud.

Well what you said wasn't pleasant. And not everyone here is a mother either.

I am truly surprised at the number of people who would be unhappy at a knock on the door on a Sunday.

At 7am? I can understand most people would be unhappy with that!

Although......... If someone had got their wee kitty trapped up a tree, (in my garden,) and they had been there all night, and the owner was desperate to get in my garden to rescue them, (and had to wake me at 7am on a Sunday,) then I would make an exception!

Thought fire service dont turn out for cat rescues these days

They did come and rescue our cat. He got his head stuck in a patio table (where the parasol goes). And he was wedged just couldn't shift him. The fire brigade cut him out.
Mind you this was about 10 years ago so don't know if they do it now. Hope your cat comes down okay. Have you tried dreamies? Our cat loved those.

I love your sense of priority. 😂

Me if there was a fire: cat first, then my record collection and 45 years worth of diaries, then DH. 😆

Not strange at all, cats are cute ! And seeing the tree may help suggestions etc

I’m not sure a distressed cat is a ‘cute’ photograph opportunity!

She's not going to ask the tree surgeon to cut the tree down!

Nowthereistwo · 23/03/2025 05:51

Why are you knocking and What do you expect them to do?

Do not knock anytime before 8 unless you see signs of life earlier.

This.

Cats are so annoying. It will probably get down on its own. It's not your neighbours problem.

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 23/03/2025 07:11

Some PPs are really dense for thinking a tree surgeon would come out, chainsaw blazing and cut a fking tree down with a cat still in it!

For anyone hard of thinking - tree surgeons are experienced tree climbers and it is this skill that will be employed. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Edited

😂

Cucy · 23/03/2025 09:14

So glad your cat got down safely ❤️

Thank goodness you had a tall enough ladder!

MissPobjoysPonies · 23/03/2025 09:15

OP glad he’s home BUT you didn’t mention he was a Ginger Tom. Honestly, they are such drama llamas (experience here) If I’d seen this earlier I’d have been able to tell you

  • noise - drama
  • tree - artention
  • food - always works
hope you all get some sleep :)

I think I read somewhere that the fire service actually DOES do this so before you fork out any money, at least ring them and ask. Don't knock on your neighbours tll 9 though.

The fire service came out for my friend’s cat which was stuck overnight in a storm on the apex on the top of her house 😿 It’s probably a good training exercise for them if they’re aren’t any fires for them to fight just now.

Hope your cat is ok OP.
