To knock on a door at 7am on a Sunday

Hi

My cat has been missing since yesterday evening and I’ve just found him up an incredibly tall tree up the road. I’ll contact an emergency tree surgeon asap. How early is it reasonable to knock on a neighbours door on a Sunday? AIBU to knock at 7am? They live a few doors up so I’ve never met them

The Fire Service will probably charge, and the Tree Surgeon is for climbing up to catch puss I suspect. Not to cut it down!

I think calling the fire service is irresponsible. The fire service is for responding to fire-related emergencies and a handful of other emergencies where their equipment would be useful/vital (e.g. serious traffic collisions), a cat up a tree is not an emergency, that is like calling the police and telling them your 8 year old son won't go to bed on time.

What danger do you think the cat is in? It's not going to fall, but if it did it wouldn't be hurt by a drop from that height. When falling from a height it's your overall mass that creates the impact, and cats are light.

The "heartbreaking noise" is you reacting as if this was a human child. It isn't. Cats can make noises that sound like a human in distress but they really aren't that distressed. Your cat is a bit grumpy, not terrified.

You don't need a 3 storey ladder, because you don't need to actually reach the cat. A normal domestic diy ladder such as one of your neighbours will have if you knock after 9 or 10am will be sufficient. Prop it up against the tree. Don't climb it, just lean it against thetree where the cat can see it, and leave it in peace for at least an hour because it won't want to try coming down while there's weird stuff happening and strange people about. After an hour, stand at the bottom of the ladder with an open can of tuna. The cat will probably then happily jump from its branch to the top of the ladder and then come down easily

Next step if that doesn't happen : as soon as an unknown human is about 6 foot up such a ladder the cat probavly see the advantages of using their shoulders as a springboard/bounce point.

RSPCA advice is not to do anything until the cat has been up there more than 24 hrs.

This.

Yes, it’s in their garden so will need to speak to them before a tree surgeon hopefully turns up

ok, I’ll wait until at least 8 then. Poor cat sounds so scared!

cat is aboit 3 storeys up - a ladder isn’t going to do it!

The Fire Brigade will help

Alexaremovethenotifications · 24/03/2025 18:45

I wouldn’t be impressed if you knocked on that early, I’d be concerned there was an actual emergency.

Given the fact the cat made it down very quickly shows how unnecessary disturbing the neighbours would have been!!

Orangeandpinknails · 24/03/2025 18:55

I don't mean to be rude and I know its probably all done now but... you can't go calling a tree surgeon for someone's tree! I assume they don't want bits chopped off their tree!?

I wasn’t planning to chop bits off their tree! RSPCA recommends contacting a local tree surgeon as someone who has the skills and equipment to navigate tall trees and rescue cats!

He somehow got down on his own though

I know it is sorted now but they would have the equipment, sure early on a Sunday morning I doubt it would have happened instantly but not a bizarre option

As fire-fighters say "You never see cat skeletons in trees". Your cat will find a way down.

Tree surgeons can rescue cats stuck up trees - no chopping needed! They just have the required long ladders and safe climbing equipment. Sometimes cats won’t come down on their own - there was one near me recently who a tree surgeon got down after days and days of it being stuck!

AlleycatMarie · 24/03/2025 20:38

So glad to read this had a happy ending @CatRescueNeeded (and if it was my cat I would have absolutely knocked at whatever time of the day or night!)
Beautiful cats x

And now he’s curled up with his sister

Glad to hear-and see-there was a happy ending to your post. Fingers crossed your kitty won't be so daft as to go climbing such big trees again!

10 at the earlier. Cold calling anyone at 7am, on any day of the week is crazy.

Go stand under the tree with your cat's favourite food. Unless he was flown up by an eagle, he got up there, he can get down.

Edited

Cats claws only work when going up. They can't swivel their claws like some wild cats can to come down forwards. If they've climbed up in a rush they would not have the confidence to come down backwards.

The fire service won't come out for this, unless a danger to human life. A tree surgeon will climb the tree safely and get the cat out. They are not going to cut down the tree.

Actually they do. If you ring the non-emergency line, it counts as community engagement

Ownedbykitties · 24/03/2025 22:35

I'm not a morning person but if you knocked on my door at 7 AM because your Dcat was stuck up a tree, I would not mind stall. Poor little cat. I hope s/he is down very soon.

FormidableAnt · 25/03/2025 07:15

So, OP, did your cat come down? I was hoping he's OK.

Why do you assume a tree surgeon would start chopping bits off a tree to get at a cat? The point is they'd have all the climbing equipment to get up the tree to rescue it .

I don't see how chopping it up would help.

Unless a cat is up a 60ft palm tree it's non swivelling claws ate unlikely to be an issue.

Most trees have branches that the cat can graduate down though. Cats just don't like climbing downwards (preferring to jump down). Bit of food and their person will help them brave it and discover they can. As this cat did.

I did laugh that it was a ginger cat. I'm still waiting to meet a ginger that's not an (adorable) idiot 🤣.

....wow... all this about a cat stuck up a tree!

Are you 12?

Are you suffering from post Lockdown depression?

Can't you get a man?

Are you into Wicca?

Doesn't your mother love you?

Or is there something else troubling you?
If none of the above apply, then please, please grow up.
