To think Adolescence was a little overblown with sketchy acting?

I was interested in it and “enjoyed it”

but I thought it was a bit overblown and some of the acting…. Well, a bit shit really.

i feel like the only person on the planet to think this!

Well, I don’t agree with you but that doesn’t mean you’re wrong!
It’s entirely subjective.

scorpiogirly · 22/03/2025 15:04

I usually like Stephen Graham but after 10 minutes I turned it off out of boredom.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 22/03/2025 15:04

It was certainly an original take on knife crime in the UK.

Chocolateismylovelife · 22/03/2025 15:05

Yes agree. Episodes 1and 3,were good , the others too drawn out.

BruisedNeckMeat · 22/03/2025 15:05

I’ve never known a tv programme be promoted so relentlessly.

MichaelandKirk · 22/03/2025 15:06

Quite honestly I didn’t rate it and massively drawn out.

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 15:07

Episode 4… bloody hell that dragged

it was decent tv

but I find the obsession with it baffling

And omg the wife’s sniffing in the last episode drove me round the bend!

Liked the first episode, and I thought episode 3 was great. The young boy was a superb actor and Erin Doherty is good in anything she does.

I don’t dislike Stephen Graham but I can’t help but think the whole thing was a bit of a vanity project for him and his acting skills, especially episode 4. It was like watching a one man play really even though there were other characters in it 🤣 he did co write it as well.

i’m sure we all know what a great actor he is by now but it just felt a bit much.

ByLoyalGreyViper · 22/03/2025 15:09

Hope this isn’t a spoiler post from me.

I’m watching it now. Ep2 seems to have a whiff of victim blaming about it.

I think the actor who plays Jamie is very good.

StrawberryWater · 22/03/2025 15:09

Was an episode too long but honestly I loved the acting and it was good tv.

Ghostofallnightmares · 22/03/2025 15:09

I was a bored in most of the episodes too. Nothing really surprised or shocked me.
In my opinion it wasn't hard hitting enough! They could've explored the school peer pressure much more forcefully and also the online influencers.
I thought these were superficially touched upon , because they're absolutely vile and far more powerful, and are absolutely poisoning young minds.
Great that conversations were started though and it's a jumping off point hopefully

Costacoffeeplease · 22/03/2025 15:09

I don’t understand the hype either

A lot of it was quite unrealistic and it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity really.

HomeBodyClub · 22/03/2025 15:09

It’s popular because it’s overhyped. Boring and shit acting.

I didn’t like anyone in it.

I think that may have been intentional. There is always a level of victim blaming in the aftermath of a female being murdered in real life, whether through the media or public opinion or from the authorities.

Bodumb · 22/03/2025 15:12

I found the execution of the warrant in the first scene, utterly unrealistic and all the school stuff a load of crap

Good point.

The school stuff wasn’t believable, I agree.

batsandeggs · 22/03/2025 15:14

I thought it was fine but I actually think it could have maybe gone even further. I’m glad to see it promoting discussion about what kids are being exposed to etc but it could have gone further, things are worse than even portrayed I reckon. It was good, but I did expect more.

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 15:14

Thank you!!

relieved I’m not alone

I have heard not one single dissenting voice to the “this is the best thing ever!!!””

Itiswhysofew · 22/03/2025 15:19

I can't watch him in anything. I don't get his appeal.

DancingLions · 22/03/2025 15:20

The young lad was a good actor, not disputing that at all. But the hype surrounding him especially is insane. "Best actor of a generation" etc etc. It's a bit much.

I had to laugh at how quickly they'd gone through the cctv, got the warrants etc. In real life that would take a week at least! Not a few hours.

I'm enjoying it, only seen 1&2 so far but it is massively over hyped. I've seen other shows recently I've enjoyed more.

Baconmaple · 22/03/2025 15:21

I thought it was very tedious and drawn out while at the same time totally lacking any depth. You are left at the end of it with no clear understanding regarding the boy and his actions. First episode was quite good except for the arrest and then the rest was a total waste of time.

PartyPopper57 · 22/03/2025 15:23

You’re not the only one OP. I thought it was good but not fantastic. Episodes 1 and 2 were great but it tailed off in episode 3 and the last episode was really boring.

domesticslattern · 22/03/2025 15:26

My DD said that the school scenes in Episode 2 felt like watching GCSE drama. Hard agree.
I think a lot of the threads at the moment to do with this show are placed/ hyped by marketers. Interesting to see "Mumsnetter" quoted in a Netflix print ad in the Guardian today.
