To think Adolescence was a little overblown with sketchy acting?

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 14:34

I was interested in it and “enjoyed it”

but I thought it was a bit overblown and some of the acting…. Well, a bit shit really.

i feel like the only person on the planet to think this!

Agree not realistic - white kid 13 from 2 parent working family isn’t typical for this kind of crime, maybe 16 gang member knife carrying mental health etc etc, I think the producers chickened out because of the mood in the country at present

You are quite wrong I'm afraid. Knife crime was not the prominent issue here.

I've obviously missed something as I don't understand the praise. I thought it was ok. If people have never heard of incels or children having unsupervised access to the internet, it's strange. It seems to have blown some people's minds.

Yes this is how I feel it was all so basic. No depth. No examination or analysis. Just very superficial.

It’s as the female police officer said in ep 2, it’s all about men and boys like Jamie.

The victims barely get a look in.

No wonder society talks about, it centres men.

That's the point!!

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 22/03/2025 18:57

thankyounextplease · 22/03/2025 16:09

I completely agree, I found it awful.

It's a shame because episode one was great (aside from the dubious acting in parts) and it could have been a brilliant series.

Felt like a first draft.

Having either the girl's perspective as flashbacks or the girl's parents' perspective showing the other side would have helped a lot I think.

Edited

What do you mean, other side? There’s no other side it’s simple. A boy killed a girl.

Jobs4kids · 22/03/2025 19:00

It was OK with some great acting, particularly from the boy, but certainly not a "masterpiece" as the hype would have us believe.

Oh, and how many 17 year old are called Lisa these days 😁

I’ve never known a tv programme be promoted so relentlessly.

Agreed. I haven't watched it, but am seeing mentions of it all over the place and know exactly what happens!

Snugglemonkey · 22/03/2025 18:20

Yes, it would seem you have.

It wasn't clear. I know a fair bit about the toxic masculinity and incel problem, but to someone who's not familiar, I don't think this drama would get the message across at all. There are parents and grandparents who know nothing about it.

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 16:33

Oh this made me smile

if you don’t like it, you must somehow be inferior to me because I enjoyed it

you “thinking”? I wonder what that looks like

I was interested in listening to your opinion and view on the show (different than mine, I thought it was brilliant and actually drew very close to secondary schools i have worked in) but strongly dislike your sarky tone in this comment.

It was a valid point - people have different tastes in what they consider entertainment on tv. Some people watch for distraction, others want something thought provoking. It wasn't a personal attack on anyone, yet your point was exactly that.

528htz · 22/03/2025 19:29

I think someone should do a better version with better acting, scriptwriting and character development over a few series. Start at the beginning and follow the characters through adolescence and into young adulthood and show how this mindset starts and develops and the harm it can lead to. Needs to be more believable than this drama.

Someone on Radio 4 was comparing it to 'Kathy Come Home' in terms of its importance, but, not even close.

Maybe reread that poster’s comment slowly

Some people genuinely don't when they're watching tv and is actually why they're watching it? They use it to switch off and as a distraction? Nothing wrong with that might I add, just not what this particular show is aimed it.

Baconmaple · 22/03/2025 19:39

But the suggestion was that anyone who didn't like the show was incapable of thinking, that they weren't intelligent enough to enjoy it.

I read it differently, in that they don't enjoy thinking while watching tv - as in that's not why they're watching tv and therefore didn't enjoy it. Not that they are incapable of thinking. They just like shows they can switch off to watch.

you “thinking”? I wonder what that looks like

That however was rude and condescending

Yep
hands up on that one
and no regrets because to myself and others the inference was definitely… if you don’t like adolescence it’s because you don’t like to think

rather than us just thinking it was a bit shit

Weirdly although I found episode 4 painful, the inane and drawn out conversation actually helped build the pressure for me

kirbykirby · 22/03/2025 20:17

Yep. It's really being pushed for some reason. It's fiction ffs!

CaptainBeanThief · 22/03/2025 20:21

Me and my husband binge watched it because, we thought it would get more "in depth" but it didn't.
It was hard to keep engaged all the way through and they wasted a lot of the time/scenes in my opinion which they could have got alot better acting out of.
I "got" the overall "idea" of which they were trying to get across but it could have been done much better, it didn't add up properly and some of the scenes didn't follow on or add up to me but I couldn't stop watching as I felt as if "something bigger/better was coming next" but it didn't, it was boring.
I still enjoyed it I guess but it definitely doesn't deserve all the credit it is getting.

Ireolu · 22/03/2025 20:23

We didnt like it. I thought it was over acted and lacking in nuance. Disjointed and boring in the end. Subject matter is important and it has people talking so that's good.
