To think Adolescence was a little overblown with sketchy acting?

I was interested in it and “enjoyed it”

but I thought it was a bit overblown and some of the acting…. Well, a bit shit really.

i feel like the only person on the planet to think this!

I haven’t watched it, but I’m aware of the discourse around it, and I’m not particularly enjoying the interviews with men in their 30s confessing they identified with the boy and can imagine ending up like that if they watched the wrong YouTube video.

i don’t want to overstate the case, because it’s only the writer and one other man I’ve heard this from, but hearing ‘normal’ men confess ‘yeah it’s not that difficult for me to imagine wanting to kill a girl because she wouldn’t go out with me’ is so fucking depressing.

Words · 22/03/2025 15:28

Very,very bad.

Iknowaboutpopular · 22/03/2025 15:28

As others have said, there were parts of it I thought very good and parts I didn't like at all. None of it was edge of your seat viewing in my opinion. Overall it left me feeling kind of disappointed, my husband said the same, he wanted more understanding of why the boy committed the crime. I think they could have gone further with it.

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 15:28

And the daughter aged 18 in the middle of the couple glued to her phone…. It had all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Look look look at how these teens are obsessed with their screens all the time

I can't watch him in anything. I don't get his appeal.

He was totally dreadful in White House Farm, his accent was borderline comedy

Thomasina79 · 22/03/2025 15:34

I was glued to my seat, the only thing which annoyed me was the sound quality, music too loud and actors mumbling. We had to put the subtitles on!

Augustus40 · 22/03/2025 15:34

I thought both the mum and the daughter were bad actors.

SiobhanSharpe · 22/03/2025 15:35

(Spoiler alert) I tend to agree with most posters here but I did really enjoy episodes 1 and 3.
Ep four was really overblown and dragged.
Yeah, we get it, the parents realised their mistakes. Too much was left unsaid and undealt with, IMO.

EasternStandard · 22/03/2025 15:35

I liked episode 1 a lot, 2 and 3 pretty good. Episode 4 undid that so I felt differently afterwards.

I was a bored in most of the episodes too. Nothing really surprised or shocked me.
In my opinion it wasn't hard hitting enough! They could've explored the school peer pressure much more forcefully and also the online influencers.
I thought these were superficially touched upon , because they're absolutely vile and far more powerful, and are absolutely poisoning young minds.
Great that conversations were started though and it's a jumping off point hopefully

I wasn't bored, but mostly I agree with this. I worked in a "related area", and what some people described as shocking was, imo, rather tame compared to what is really going on. People think that they know about misogyny and incels, and that the Tates are basically vile but pillocks (which is, to be fair, true). But the Tates are actually almost akin to the "moderate" wing - what is actually out there, and what young boys and men are accessing is far worse than most peoples nightmares. They prey on the very normal insecurities and fears of adolescents, warping them into dangerous and violent ideoologies and linking them to other extremist views and actions. And they are "out there" in their millions and millions and millions. They are not some small but vocal minority.

Andanotherone01 · 22/03/2025 15:38

Episode 1 was amazing television. I couldn’t look away from episode 3 - it made me so uncomfortable but was so compelling. 2 and 4 (4 in particular) dragged and could have been much shorter. I still thought the acting was brilliant though

Cocolapew · 22/03/2025 15:42

It was mediocre at best.

dontforgetme · 22/03/2025 15:44

Completely over hyped. Ep 4 was boring as fuck.

HansHolbein · 22/03/2025 15:45

We were disappointed. I don’t think I liked the way it was filmed. All the talking from the house to the paint shop was dreadful. Episode 3 was ok.

I felt like there was a lot of unfinished business 🤷‍♀️

IdaGlossop · 22/03/2025 15:47

I am watching it for a second time, after being impressed the first time. Its main appeal for me is its 'terrible things happen to ordinary people' storyline. I began watching it thinking it was about knife crime. It's actually about so-called toxic masculinity. This time, what's standing out are the clues that pave the way to the main character ending up as the murderer of a young girl.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 22/03/2025 15:49

It doesn’t matter whether you like it or not doesn’t matter whether you thought the act were crap. The fact is it’s got people talking all over the world that is pretty impressive.

I never said it mattered (although needless to say it “matters” to me!)

It's completely subjective obviously and you can take issue with the script, the shooting and the over-promotion but I can't see how you can have arrived at the conclusion that the acting was shit...

Stephen Graham and the boy who played Jamie were both superb. Far better than anything I've seen on TV for a long time.

Radish81 · 22/03/2025 15:51

i am not alone!

And how someone views an actor is also entirely subjective

XelaM · 22/03/2025 15:52

To everyone who likes episode 3 - why? I don't get the scenes with the weird and very unprofessional psychologist at all. Her line of questioning made no sense and her reaction to his outbursts was way over the top.

BreezyShaker · 22/03/2025 15:52

The plot moved at a snails pace, no twists, predicable. I knew the way the hot chocolate cup was placed on the table it was going flying minutes before it happened. Was an ok watch but so overhyped. These sort of incel crimes are vanishingly rare as well.

Whoarethoseguys · 22/03/2025 15:53

I have only just started watching it but so far the acting has been excellent. Very naturalist.

HansHolbein · 22/03/2025 15:54

@XelaM I was surprised at her reaction. Surely she would be experienced with this sort of stuff? Looking frightened in parts and then crying at the end? Unless she was newly qualified or something…

Allthecolours2025 · 22/03/2025 15:56

I enjoyed it but .. I wasn’t entirely convinced by the premise . And it was never explored why the boy was out at 10.30pm on a school night and why his mother (who was at home) didn’t know he was out . Unless I missed something..
