To have complained about another mum’s swimming ‘costume’

Raven25 · 22/03/2025 13:48

This morning I went to a weekly parents/young children swimming session with my DD at a national hotel/leisure club chain. We go most weeks and there’s usually a similar crowd in attendance.

It is predominantly other Mum’s who go, with the odd Dad.

Today, one of the other Mum’s was wearing what I can only describe as a thong, in fact it was more of a g string and barely contained her modesty. My DD pointed at her from the pool when she was walking in the opposite direction and asked where her clothes were. I could tell others in the pool had noticed her and didn’t know what to think.

Everyone else was wearing all in one style costumes or the odd bikini which actually fits.

I found this completely inappropriate given it was a swimming session for toddlers/young children, that outfit was more appropriate for someone on only fans!

On the way out, I spoke to one of the staff on reception and asked them whether they enforce certain standards to which I was told it’s up to visitors what they wear but they draw the line at any full nudity - which I’d argue this was. They didn’t seem too bothered and the young female colleague listening in next to her said ‘it’s nice to see a mum with that much confidence’ which I felt was rude. It’s not about confidence, it’s about respect.

I’ve got home and told DH who thinks I was ridiculous to complain and says he’d be embarrassed to turn up there with me next time we go to the gym together!

Yes! And I’m calling this out and it’s MY posts that are being deleted here! There’s two of us though so I feel better!

Honestly it’s crazy. It’s exactly the same regular thing pervert posting about how ‘inappropriate’ the thong is. Why do people fall for it? Why does Mumsnet allow it? Traffic? Engagement? It’s gross.

You sound just like MY mum ... who'd be in her 80s now if she were still around. 😀

It’s sounds like Mumsnet’s regular thong pervert - BECAUSE IT IS!

Yes I called it out and it was deleted. Ad revenue targets get hit I guess.

I've nothing to add other than to say its absolutely disgusting subjecting young children to this display of nudity. If it was a man he'd be pilloried so why should a woman get off with it.

It was suspicious from the start, it was obvious when the thong woman herself posted.

She’s within her rights, sure.

That doesn’t mean that’s all there is to it.

I’m within my rights to say you are a handmaiden to the patriarchy.

Doesnt mean I should. 😉

You’re hilarious!
”handmaiden to the patriarchy”, my (never thonged) ass. Fucking fanny floss - but will I defend other’s right to wear’s? Sure!

What else is there to it that could possibly be your business? 🤔🤔

BECAUSE she wasn’t fucking nude. She was wearing a perfect normal bikini.

but apparently, the thread’s a figment of the ass bandit/thong obsessed gremlin of mumsnet anyway, so hey ho.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 22/03/2025 17:50

I have a weird opinion where I probably wouldn’t have an issue going to a nude beach with the kids - bits and bobs are natural.

it’s the weird peekaboo nature of thongs and under boob/ micro bikinis that make it very - look at me and sexual I take issue with! I agree with others that a man with his arse hanging out would be reported. Underboob = under bollock?!?!?!

Tell me I’m weird but - complete nudity= natural. Micro bikini Katie price style = sexual and a bit grim at the local pool.

But it’s not a normal bikini for a toddler swim class. If it was then the toddlers would be wearing them also. It’s fine for the beach or on holiday but not at a toddler swimming session. Context matters.

I dunno… equality for women? Their right just to be, rather than to view themselves as constantly on display? The bullshit that is ‘any choice made by a women is a feminist choice?’ The way that somehow, we’ve been convinced that whatever works for men is empowering for us?

and also, you understand that ‘mind your own business, nothing that anyone does is anything to do with you’ leads society into dark, dark places?

Vitrolinsanity · 22/03/2025 17:54

Well it wouldn't be my particular cup of tea, but I'd have zoned her out and concentrated on the point of being there.

A few years ago we were in Thailand, kids everywhere in the pool, and an Instagrammer rocked up in strings and bum length extensions and spent half an hour or so rolling around on one of the poolside four poster loungers. entwining herself around the posts. You get the drift.

One by one the kids in the pool took up posing on the ones either side of her. The staff were suddenly super busy being elsewhere, and every parent was engrossed in their books.

Crazyladee · 22/03/2025 17:57

MeliusMoriQuamServire · 22/03/2025 17:07

Hard no from me. I don't see arses hanging out, shorts up your arse with cheeks visible, those scrunch bum leggings, leggings pulled up to your armpits to display camel toes, tits falling out and similar stuff as 'empowering'. You're free to do so and to teach it to your kids, but I don't.

I see it as vulgar, desperate, gross, pathetic and attention seeking. And I'm not going to apologize for it. All the above attire is not 'comfy', what's 'comfy' about jean shorts halfway up your arse? It's not good looking, it's not even sexy. It's the lowest form of attention seeking.

I have the body to show off, yet I don't walk around trusting my pretty much naked arse to people's faces in toddler's swim class (or anywhere else). It's gross. And yes, I do judge, absolutely. I'd also judge a man, if he showed up in Borat's swimsuit, just as hard.

Have some self respect, you're not a piece of meat. You don't need to have all your goods on show publically to be valued. That's what I'm teaching my kids. IDGAF if that's 'misoginystic' or some such.

And no, if some woman is prancing around kiddie's pool with her butt on display - I'd definitely comment and see no problem if my kids do. You want attention? You got it. Does she have a right to dress however she wants? Oh absolutely. Just as I do have a right to tell her what I think of it.

Well you just have, considering she's commented on the thread. Good grief. Got carried away a bit there didn't we?
The "prancing around" apparently amounted to her walking back to get her water bottle and checking for something in the changing rooms.
I also don't recall seeing on the OP that the girl(@JessK98) was "thrusting her naked arse into people's faces at a toddler swim session"
I personally don't like bikini thongs, but I have a pair of denim shorts that are on the skimpy side. It took me a full year before I felt confident enough to wear them after slimming down and working on toning my legs.
I have a friend who at 53 wears scrunch bum leggings to the gym because they make her bottom look more shapely and that gives her a bit more confidence wearing them. Most of them these days have been designed without a front seam to avoid a camel toe. In your book, wearing these items is gross and pathetic? We also don't have any self respect and are pieces of meat. What are we in, the 1950's?? What happened to lifting other women up instead of tearing them down? You sound so judgemental and quite honestly, a prude.

cadburyegg · 22/03/2025 17:58

I wouldn’t have complained but YANBU at the principle. We spend years teaching children that what is underneath their underwear is a private area not to be shown to anyone outside their family. Anyone walking round with their arse hanging out in public sort of undermines the point.

I love it that your child asked where her clothes were 😅😅 out of the mouths of babes…

I used to swim every week and there was some young Russian ladies that wore the tiniest bikinis I've ever seen when swimming with their babies, fair play though cos they had cracking figures, i didn't complain though just thought they were very brave 😂

If people minding their own business re other folks' choice of swimwear is a dark dark place, then it's a dark dark place I'm happy to inhabit.

my whole point is that it's not an actual choice. It's a choice made within an environment that by any means it can enforces the idea that younger women are primarily sexual commodities.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 22/03/2025 14:46

All the cool girls will be telling you how nothing bothers them, and they are totally okay with their children being shown unsolicited body parts usually kept covered.

Until some one decides that showing isn’t enough, and wants touching…. There’s a good reason for boundaries around children.

But when you go swimming aren’t women naked in changing rooms in front of kids. I know I’ve been in plenty with my children with women getting dressed. It doesn’t bother them and why should it!

my best friend is Finnish and she finds it hilarious how weird Brits are over nudity, when she was younger she tells me you just got used to seeing naked bodies (mainly in saunas - men and women) and body shaming is just not a thing! I like the way that sounds (although I would never dare to be naked in a sauna!) 😛

Excitedbride2b · 22/03/2025 18:05

Mind your own business. Such a ridiculous thing to complain about, I wouldn't waste your time or theres

thestudio · 22/03/2025 18:05

I imagine the wanking's getting harder and harder work 😁

ELMhouse · 22/03/2025 18:08

I also love the female body in all its form. The other week at our pool there was a women who must have been over 70 odd she has a cracking figure and was wearing quite a small bikini. I just thought she looked fantastic and I was very jealous that she was so ‘brave’ (without trying to be too patronising!), she looked amazing despite the cellulite (as some rude poster mentioned above), wrinkles and loose skin! She looked fab!

NeelyOHara1 · 22/03/2025 18:08

Of course it's inappropriate in these circumstances, but everyone is supposed to be blasé about it or you're a shamer/jealous if female or a pervert if male.
