To think this photo is not appropriate to advertise a dress?

Is it just my raging feminist thoughts with this photo that is being used as one of the pictures of a dress offered for sale on a high street store website. Is this appropriate? I don't think it is but one might say that that is my weird view and actually it is a perfectly okay pic? (!)
I think it looks like a 'come fuck me' picture and that is not okay?!

What on earth in that photograph makes you think "Dave"?! Just because the model has an athletic, muscular figure? I've seen and known quite a few women who look like this. There is no way I'd look at any of the photos in this thread and say they're male at all!
Back in the 70s, one of my mums friends was a masculine looking woman! But she was definitely a woman! People can't help their looks and if I was the model, I'd be very upset at slurs like this.

ImmediateReaction · 27/03/2025 08:27

Bored person sat on toilet with HUGE feet

ImmediateReaction · 27/03/2025 08:28

The feet made me think man. The pose is odd

EdinburghTimezone · 27/03/2025 09:50

The photo is unattractive and makes me think the dress is unflattering too. Nit sexual but maybe designed to show off the models long legs.

Boomer55 · 27/03/2025 09:57

I don’t know what the dress would look like on, but her legs and feet look enormous. 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t say the photo was provocative or alluring.

RachelLikesTea · 27/03/2025 09:59

'raging feminist thoughts'?

Should we return to Victoria dress and stiff upright poses, then?

You know this for a fact?

Toseland · 27/03/2025 11:38

No I don't know for a fact. But such a masculine model puts me off buying. I think M&S are purposefully trolling us.

EdinburghTimezone · 27/03/2025 12:23

Here we are discussing the advert, so perhaps it has succeeded by getting our interest.
Have to say though that I'm not interested in the actual dress and have not noticed which brand it is, if any.

OpalMaker · 27/03/2025 12:25

Because of course, a woman who isn’t sat all prim and proper must be thinking “come and fuck me”.

rolloverbeethoven · 27/03/2025 12:40

Big feet are on trend though, aren't they? Big feet and big bums. Honestly, I'm quite the fashionista these days! Grin

This is a shocking thing for you to post

Panterusblackish · 27/03/2025 15:13

Actually I think it's a really feminist picture.

To me she looks sat in a pose that would be fine for a man, but would have my other screaming to put you knees together. She looks unburdened by expectation of croquettishness

I’m pretty certain it is a man in the photo…

Why is it shocking?

Carity · 28/03/2025 14:26

Good question.
it looks like a man. ( bra ad) Either way the ugly lighting and pose is putting me off.

Funny, I’ve always loved the androgynous Bowie, Lennox, and that novel Orlando where the hero changes sex through different times. but that’s spoilt for me now - now I don’t see street rebellious cheekbones and a little bit risqué, I see aggressive and ugly, and people like m and s buying into a top down movement that they don’t understand and that’s all about getting men into women’s spaces and making money from untested medical treatments.
no thanks m and s. It’s not cool to normalise men in women’s dresses so men can barge into women only spaces and we feel it’s acceptable because it’s ’normal’ . I don’t want to see men who get turned on by dressing as women represented in women’s panty adverts. Eewww.

Did you actually look at the rest of the photos of this model on M&S website or just the one posted here?

Why is it shocking?

I think the post would be fine, and even agree with the sentiment without linking it back to a specific individual, that seems unnecessary

Yeah I think the op despite proclaiming to be a feminist is actually being quite anti feminist with the 'omg she's sitting badly! Put your knees together!' thing

McQueensMuse · 21/03/2025 18:54

I don’t find the picture offensive.
It does remind me of how men sit on public transport though.

That was my first thought
Bit of "woman spreading" going on there 😁

🤣 Not seen that post as not seen all the replies, sounds about right for MN though - the trans investigators "we can always tell" brigade have come out to play 😂

Gettingbysomehow · 15/08/2025 12:47

M@S is well known for absurd model poses and Im just shrieking stand up so I can see the dress!!!! It's an extremely unflattering pose for the poor model, her feet look gigantic becsuse they are forefront of the photo. It's generally unattractive and I've never ever been that shape or height so I can't see the dress on myself.
