To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YABU - listen to …..
YANBU - no one can match them!

Have you heard the original by Garth Brooks?

Paul Durham of Black Lab is another singer with a voice guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. Same with Justin Currie, especially his solo stuff, his Parkinsons Diagnosis is so awful.

Honestly had no idea that was a cover! When I eventually sit down to do some work today I will definitely listen to it, thank you.

Yes Marti Pellow!! Lock me in a room with him! Just to sing for me and me only! 😂😂

He could sing, later....

Phil Collins did not write Groovy Kind Of Love
"A Groovy Kind of Love" is a song written by Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager based on a melody by the classical composer Muzio Clementi.

Justin Currie is a songwriting god.

Female singers:
Kate Bush
Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries

It does make me wonder why so many people aspire to fame as there is no training course in dealing with it and being unable to handle/having difficulty handling fame can have terrible consequences. I wouldn’t thank you for it.

Yes, sorry I’ve apologised upthread for my mistake.

I agree thats its not just voice, plenty of excellent singers are bland. I find current singers are just too try hard in an attempt to have a personality.

Quacking4it · 21/03/2025 12:38

Matt Bellamy from Muse. Very talented

SpencerTheRover · 21/03/2025 12:42

@beguilingeyes
I may have found my tribe.

’Dead Inside’ was one of his most divisive and controversial tracks but it was also beautifully written. The YouTube picture was beneath him though.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/03/2025 12:43

You can form an orderly queue behind me ladies for Marti Pellow. I mentioned him first I'm claiming dibs 😂😂😂

Helterskelterthroughtheday · 21/03/2025 12:46

Adam Lambert is astonishingly good live and has that rare mix of charisma and voice. Elton John's voice live is much better than I imagined.

I'm thinking back over the best singers I've seen, probably Ruby Turner wins.

Letmecallyouback · 21/03/2025 12:50

I just don't know what happened to George Ezra. When his first album came out and Budapest was a massive hit I thought my god, this boy has a really soulful voice way ahead of his age, he's going to be really big. Then something happened. I don't know if it was that he got moulded by the music industry to only have a certain image or a certain sound they thought would sell or something but every consecutive album and record after that first one was just all an easy listening sing along with grandma load of old dross. If you listen to Budapest, he had so much promise at first but I don't think he's ever going to reach his full potential now.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/03/2025 12:54

Bruno Mars for me.

user1471467504 · 21/03/2025 12:54

Ronnie Radke lead singer of Falling in Reverse - awful person but the talent on that guy is next level. Give last resort reimagined a listen to hear is full vocal range - incredible!

Excited101 · 21/03/2025 12:55

I am SO pleased I managed to see George Michael at the Royal Albert Hall for his symphonica tour, it was absolutely breathtaking. My sister came with me as not such a massive fan and was floored by his voice. Such a shame I never got to see him again, when we came out of the show I knew I wanted to go again.

I came to say Mika. He's my absolute idol and his voice is unique. Sadly he's not as popular in the UK anymore, although I saw him in concert twice last year here, but he's still huge in other European countries, especially France and Italy. He has often been compared to Freddie Mercury, he's the only singer who comes close to him as far as I'm concerned.

I saw him twice last year two and once the year before, he's not playing anywhere I can get to this year, gutted.

Morten Harket from A-ha is still going strong. It is funny watching all of the Gen X women blubbing to the acoustic version of Take on Me, as we realise that the guy who popped out of a comic book is now in his 60's.

TofuFighters · 21/03/2025 12:59

Voices I love at the moment are Teddy Swims, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs and Post Malone.

I love George Michael’s voice and I like a lot of Elton Johns music. I’ve never been a big Queen fan although I can appreciate Freddie Mercurys voice was very good.

SapatSea · 21/03/2025 13:03

Paul Rodgers (Free, bad Comapny) is very under rated - he sang with Queen for a while - bluesy and really powerful (but is a contemporary of Freddie). Adam Lambert is great too .

Cynthia Erivo is amazing - her tone is so beautiful.

BasicBrumble · 21/03/2025 13:05

Benson Boone is very good and also still very young - he's only had a few hits because he's only been around five minutes. I think he could do well with the right support.

Not the kind of voice you're talking about, but Sam Fender sings with an authentic tone that really makes his songs come alive.

I also love the Bastille singer's voice.

...an easy listening sing along with grandma load of old dross

People who are grandmas now were young in the 60s and 70s and sang along to the Rolling Stones, Queen and many of the other artists mentioned in this thread.

Or if they were young in the 50s, they were doing the Jailhouse Rock or wearing their Blue Suede Shoes along with Elvis.

Less of the ageist stereotyping, please.

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/03/2025 13:06

Give me a bloke or woman stood on a stage, in pretty normal clothing, and just singing, and I'm happy!

You might like Martyn Joseph then, Welsh singer songwriter, fantastic voice and good at his craft.

PP have mentioned amazing talents that aren’t so mainstream.
I started following Aaron Gage on YouTube, I love this video as Les Miserables is an absolute favourite of mine.

Unfortunately the subject of this one is still about…..astonishing multi instrumentalist…not the orange one….

Arraminta · 21/03/2025 13:06

James Arthur. The guy looks like a potato but his voice is just gorgeously sexy.

Kevin Simms. His audition on The Voice was phenomenal.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 21/03/2025 13:10

Ooh Benson Boone and Teddy Swims - and Jack Savoretti (The way you said goodbye)

To be fair I don't think anyone you quoted there could possibly be anywhere near the same calibre. They are all far superior to the one I quoted, therefore I stand by what I said regarding George Ezra because your comparisons are nothing alike.
