To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YABU - listen to …..
YANBU - no one can match them!

I love a voice with character and I do find a lot of modern singers have no discernible character to their voice. It could be down to the cookie cutter production they use nowadays.

I don’t necessarily go for power voices over character. I currently like Noah Kahan, Korean singer Jo Jinho (lovely voice), Mitch Grassi (can go very high).

Mitch Grassi is superb

I saw him twice last year two and once the year before, he's not playing anywhere I can get to this year, gutted.

I've going to see him in Leeds in July, but the Latitude festival where he's also playing looks like hell on earth, I just can't make it work, so I'm sadly having to miss that. I'm hoping he'll add more UK dates 🤞

kittensinthekitchen · 21/03/2025 13:20

Reneé Rapp has an AMAZING voice.

To hear it best, I'd recommend Snow Angel and World Burns.

Words · 21/03/2025 13:20

I don't know much about modern music but I would suggest

Eva Cassidy
Amy Winehouse

Freddy Mercury
Hozier. Never heard of him until one of his songs (take me to church) was used on Sergei Polunin's fabulous ballet video

Words · 21/03/2025 13:29

As for Dylan - I just can't tolerate listening to it any more than I could a rap artist.

GripGetter · 21/03/2025 13:30

The swoonsome voice of swoonsome Morten Harket (lead singer of A-ha).

Sam Smith.
Calvin Harris.
Pascal Obispo.

lizzyBennet08 · 21/03/2025 13:30

Hozier surely

AlertCat · 21/03/2025 13:33

HRTFT and I know the OP was on male voices, but I was lucky enough to see Madeleine Peyroux live and she has an incredible voice, reminiscent of Bessie Smith, Peggy Lee, those 30s and 40s blues voices. I’ve loved her albums for years but live, her voice is so smooth and perfect (she had an amazing band, too).

Astrak · 21/03/2025 13:40

Freddie Mercury for ever! Elton John in his earlier years.

Riverswims · 21/03/2025 13:46

George Ezra
Rag and Bone man
Aloe Blacc
Usher

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/03/2025 13:50

I don't know any grandma's who sing along with George Ezra. I do however know a group of under 10s who regularly sing along with him

@ItsABeautifulDay25 none of the music of today will be around in 20 or 30 years time! but the old stuff ie black sabbath etc etc will still be played. my grandaughter at 16 has now duplicated and stolen most of our record collection and it is what she plays in her guitar music exams!

Edited

My dad was saying exactly that 50 years ago.

"The Beatles? You think anyone's going to be listening to that rubbish in fifty years? Joni who? Smokey what?"

The kids who hang out at our house are listening to all those - you're right. But they're also listening to some fantastic new stuff that'll still be listened to when they're old, because they'll take it with them. Phoebe Bridgers, for instance is a phenomenal songwriter and singer. In the wave before that I'd suggest The Fratellis, Panic! At the Disco, and particularly Arctic Monkeys, who are absolutely as good as The Kinks or The Who.

And because today's kids will still play that music, their kids will hear it and love it, just as mine love Bowie and the Floyd.

What's changed is the cultural importance of pop music. It's no longer the vehicle of rebellion, fashion, lifestyle. How can it be, in the world of the internet? When I was kid, music was the only thing we had that belonged to us.

Also, of course, it's quite difficult to rebel by listening to music when your parents say, "Ooh, who's that? It's really good."

I can't abide Elton John's voice. It isn't good. Neither is Bob Dylan's.

Yirk · 21/03/2025 14:03

Amy Winehouse,
Adele,
Celine Dion,
Robert Plant,
Freddie,
Miles

Bob Dylan is an amazing song writer and incredibly charismatic. You'll be bad mouthing Cohen next.

Lots of people can bellow out the right notes to other people's music but I don't want to spend money listening to them.

Endofyear · 21/03/2025 14:12

Gregory Porter has an incredible voice. Rag & Bone Man too. Freddie Mercury and Elton John were great showmen and I can't think of a modern day act that compares really!

elgreco · 21/03/2025 14:12

I think Cohen is a marvellous songwriter and i like his voice but it is not a great voice.

Oh a fellow fan ❤️ His bit in the music video of Hallelujah literally stopped me in my tracks and I looked up and said who is that! Been a massive fan ever since, his voice is from the angels.

Leeds clashes With Lytham Festival so I'll miss him, feel the same as you about Latitude!
I'm also hoping for another show this year, he's amazing 👏

JoanChitty · 21/03/2025 14:45

Totally agree with pp who said Freddie Mercury. He had a fabulous voice and a great stage presence. I was lucky enough to see Queen at knebworth in 1986.
They were brilliant.

fussychica · 21/03/2025 15:08

George Michael, incredible voice and gone way too soon. Still upsets me.
Can't think of a current male vocalist who can match him or Freddie even though there's a lot of good ones around.

That's a shame about Leeds. I'm glad I read the reviews about Latitude first, sounds like a nightmare to even get there and tickets have been on sale since October, but Mika was only announced a couple of weeks ago, so all the hotels in the nearest town are fully booked. Google comes up with ones 16 miles away 😕 I considered a coach there and back on the same day, but after reading the reviews, it's not worth the expense and hassle when he might only be a speck in the distance. He really is amazing, I had such a great Mika year last year with 2 concerts, meeting him when he was filming The Piano at Victoria Station and again at Battersea and going to the final in Newcastle. Was hoping for another great year this year.

I thought Amy wine house was amazing too plus singers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone.

recent singers - Ariana grande, Beyoncé

Oh yes, I love Etta James and Nina Simone, big mention for Aretha, too!

Lyannaa · 21/03/2025 15:24

George Michael and Freddie Mercury were both irreplaceable and I agree with you.

Oh wow, you got to meet him, lucky you.
I'd miss Stevie Wonder if I went to Leeds and I've more chance of seeing Mika again.
I did love seeing him running through the picnics at Kew, made my night!
