To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YABU - listen to …..
YANBU - no one can match them!

I thought no-one could top Freddie or George Michael live, then late last November saw Tom Chaplin sing with Keane in a very small room in Soho and was blown away, such power in his voice. Was an acoustic set they did, so scaled right back, just keyboard, guitar, tambourine. Amazing (and I told him afterwards haha)

Its not about good singers, it's about star power

Elton john and george michael are great examples of this. They radiate something but it's not actually their voice. Hence there are many identical sounding tribute acts (and actually tribute acts that sing better than they do). Ed sheeran and Elton john are similar in that they have song writing power, performance power but vocals alone aren't anything special

A quick watch of the voice, x factor or even if you go round cruise ships/ pubs, west end singers shows thousands of really really good singers that are better than 90% of "stars" but are also just chronically boring, and don't have an edge that make you want to buy their singles or listen to whole albums or seem to "musical theatery"

Lots of people's favourite artists have a voice crack or something that makes them interesting to listen to

Edited

I’m not sure how you can say it’s not George’s voice. His voice is amazing and he happens to have the extra ‘thing’ he radiates too. And of all the tribute acts I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot), none of them come close to the perfection of George.

I can’t comment on Elton or Freddie, because, as much as I love them too, I’ve not seen any tribute acts for them.

Serj Tankian has a powerful and distinctive voice. He’s one of my favourites.

also love Matisyahu.

I’m not one to comment really as I don’t get on with more modern music - don’t get me wrong, I think there are obviously very talented people out there but I rarely listen to anything after mid 90’s as it just doesn’t do anything for me. I listen to George a lot, as you might tell from my username. Also Freddie, Bowie, Prince. Then lots of 80’s and 90’s chart stuff, as well as 90’s house/dance music. That does me!

I feel so lucky I got to see George before he died. His performance was absolutely stunning and I came back knowing nothing would ever top that (unless I got to see him again, which I didn’t).

I also saw Queen with Adam Lambert and he was absolutely outstanding. I remember people being negative at the time saying “he won’t be as good as Freddie”. But he didn’t try to be Freddie - he was Adam Lambert singing Freddie’s songs and boy did he do them justice.

My teenage daughter loves Elton! She saw him a couple of years ago and loved him.

Adam Lambert? I think he has a great voice. And Sam Ryder, he also seems like such a lovely man.

Yes Adam Lambert!

Roger Daltrey - Love, reign o'er me - perfection!
Rag 'n' Bone Man
Elton - something 'bout the way you look tonight - chills

Give me a bloke or woman stood on a stage, in pretty normal clothing, and just singing, and I'm happy!

You might like Martyn Joseph then, Welsh singer songwriter, fantastic voice and good at his craft.

Martyn Joseph is brilliant. He does a cover of Springsteen's One Step Up that's almost better than the original (not something I ever thought I'd say, even Eddie Vedder's cover isn't that good.) And when Martyn Joseph does his own song, Cardiff Bay I can feel my bones melt. His voice is something else.

Sherleen Spiteri. Saw Texas live and she is phenomenal. She plays instruments too so there could be something in what pp said?
She was vile to a member of the audience so I don't like her but can't deny her talent.

I think if your just thinking mainstream then the vocal range is "limited". But we have an amazing alternative scene out there that has a mass of established and upcoming talent. Oli Sykes from Bring me the Horizon, Jocoby Shaddix from Papa Roach and some already mentioned on the thread already like Yungblud, David Draiman to name but a few.

RaraRachael · 24/03/2025 10:22

I find it ridiculous that we now have "singers" who can't actually sing. I was taught to sing properly and if somebody can't sing in tune, keep in time or takes great gulping gasps of air then in my book they're not a singer.

Yungblud started off in musical theatre. I have seen recordings of him performing with NYMT as a youngster and he was amazing.

I watched him live in 2021 he is amazing a real born performer. He has this amazing energy when performing, he looked like he was loving every minute.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Paolo Nutini? Exceptional voice, especially on the songs No Other Way, Through The Echoes, Everywhere, Iron Sky.

Adam Lambert, he can literally sing anything and sound amazing. He's the male version of Kelly Clarkson.

BigBoysDontCry · 24/03/2025 11:59

Teddy Swims?

I don't know any grandma's who sing along with George Ezra. I do however know a group of under 10s who regularly sing along with him

Odd comment. He’s played frequently on commercial radio. Of course grandmas sing along with his songs.

LushLemonTart · 24/03/2025 12:58

I've got one I doubt any of you or not many have heard of. Jamie Woon. He's disappeared now can't find anything about him? Voice like silk.

I've been to see George Ezra twice- I'm a grandma.
The age range was from 8 to 80s . Great atmosphere. Like a big singalong party.

I think a lot of concerts are like that now, a mix of all ages and I think it gives a better, more friendly atmosphere.

AmateurDad · 27/03/2025 00:12

Slightly odd take, given his voice has clearly become richer and improved as he has aged

AmateurDad · 27/03/2025 00:14

Had to read that three times to work out what you meant. And I think that is:

"if somebody can't sing in tune OR keep in time or takes great gulping gasps of air then in my book they're not a singer."

coxesorangepippin · 27/03/2025 00:43

Michael Jackson too
His voice was just beautiful

Krest · 27/03/2025 00:50

For me it would be :

Brian McKnight
Wanya from Boyz II Men
Adele
Whitney Houston
George Michael
Sam Smith
James Arthur
Karen Carpenter
Sam Cooke
Tracy Chapman
Celion Dion
