To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YABU - listen to …..
YANBU - no one can match them!

I'm not into her music, but lady gaga has an amazing voice.

wizzywig · 21/03/2025 09:28

Oh you forgot Whitney .

SemperIdem · 21/03/2025 09:29

I’m struggling to think of anyone.

Taran Egerton (actor) has a very good voice, good enough that he played Elton John in the biopic. However he is not actually a singer so that doesn’t really answer the question.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2025 09:29

Sam Ryder - his voice is incredible
Justin Hawkins
Chappell Roan
Arianna Grande (listen to her Jason Robert Brown stuff)

Yes absolutely! Sorry I was thinking about male singers. But absolutely Whitney ❤️ if I could sing like anyone it would be Whitney or Annie Lennox. I would, however, consider Adele to be up there for power.

I do think it is easier to think of female singers who have incredible voices currently, than it is male ones.

User32459 · 21/03/2025 09:32

Listened to That's What Friends Are For the other day. Amazing vocals with Elton, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight.

Can't compare anyone now at least male singers.

Glowingworms · 21/03/2025 09:33

Its not about good singers, it's about star power

Elton john and george michael are great examples of this. They radiate something but it's not actually their voice. Hence there are many identical sounding tribute acts (and actually tribute acts that sing better than they do). Ed sheeran and Elton john are similar in that they have song writing power, performance power but vocals alone aren't anything special

A quick watch of the voice, x factor or even if you go round cruise ships/ pubs, west end singers shows thousands of really really good singers that are better than 90% of "stars" but are also just chronically boring, and don't have an edge that make you want to buy their singles or listen to whole albums or seem to "musical theatery"

Lots of people's favourite artists have a voice crack or something that makes them interesting to listen to

XWKD · 21/03/2025 09:34

I don't think Elton John's voice is anything special.

itsnotabouthepasta · 21/03/2025 09:34

I think vocally Sam Ryder is excellent. He should be an utter megastar.

Michael Buble has a timeless voice

But you're right, of the male set of singers, there's a distinct lack of 'wow' factor compared to Bowie, Freddie Mercury, George Michael and Elton John

MintTwirl · 21/03/2025 09:35

Adam Lambert? I think he has a great voice. And Sam Ryder, he also seems like such a lovely man.

dialfor · 21/03/2025 09:35

I still get goosebumps when I listen to Don’t let the sun go down on me; when Elton walks out and a small corner of the crowed spot him and start screaming, followed by George introducing him - the absolute feels I get to this day listening to that.

I don’t know any male singers who have it ‘all’ I guess. There are a lot of popular singers but with pretty average voices tbh. Outstanding vocals are missing with the more current generation

TempestTost · 21/03/2025 09:38

The thing is, with really amazing singers, it's not just about "the voice". It's about how they sing, the choices they make, how they shape the notes and phrases.

The big singers today may equal the voices of the past, but who knows, they are all pitch corrected and autotuned up the ying-yang, so a lot of what a great singer should be bringing to the music is lost.

Gymrabbit · 21/03/2025 09:39

I think Elton Johns voice is distinctly mediocre though I like his music.

Hozier is very good, surprised no one has mentioned Adele too.

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 21/03/2025 09:40

Josh Kiszka from Greta Van Fleet is amazing.

I agree with Sam Ryder as well, saw him a few years ago and he was brilliant.

There are lots of smaller artists I listen to that have massive potential and I'm excited to see where their careers take them.

There'll always be singers who can hold a note, but not many with really distinctive singing voice and star power that the legacy artists of the 60s and 70s did. Ed Sheeran is pretty bland and sums it up really, although he's written some great songs.

Women are dominating popular music now though over the last decade or two.

ruethewhirl · 21/03/2025 09:40

For me no one will ever beat Freddie as far as male singers go. Phenomenal voice.

EdithStourton · 21/03/2025 09:40

No one matches Freddie Mercury, but George Ezra has a wonderful voice.

Ezra has good variation. I don't think he's a particularly good live act though.

WinterFoxes · 21/03/2025 09:42

Mika has an incredible voice but he's not as well known as any of them. I always thought he'd make a more fitting replacement for Freddie Mercury in Queen than Adam Lambert.

McQueensMuse · 21/03/2025 09:42

Benson Boone reminds me of Freddie Mercury.
Excellent voice, Flamboyant stage presence.

autisticbookworm · 21/03/2025 09:42

I thought Amy wine house was amazing too plus singers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone.

recent singers - Ariana grande, Beyoncé

Dan Sultan has a strong set of pipes.

Oh I love Elton John 's voice. It makes the hair stand up on my neck when he sings Daniel and Your Song and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Maybe not now, but when he was young. Not as incredible or as versatile as Mercury's but in its own way, it is so emotional.
