To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YABU - listen to …..
YANBU - no one can match them!

I don't think there's ever been anyone comparable to Freddie Mercury regarding range, writing ability and charisma.

Elton John is an amazing song writer but not a particularly special singer. George Michael had a very good voice and wrote his own songs. I wasn't aware of how good he was until I saw him do the Queen tribute concert.

David Bowie had his own category, he wasn't like anyone else. An amazing song writer and character, his voice wasn't great but very distinctive. He created his own musical genre.

I don't know that much about modern music and don't know anyone who compares to any of them.

Totally agree that Bowie is in a category of his own.
Many PP have paid tribute to Freddie Mercury’s voice, but if you play ‘Under Pressure’ it’s Bowie’s delivery of the lyrics that is guaranteed to make me cry every time.
Having said that ‘Who wants to live forever’ is a shares in Kleenex song.

Roman Keating’s If Tomorrow Never Comes does that to me! It was released at a time I used to drive to work, regularly arrived having cried my eyes out 😂

Imagine being weedy moustache boy in this sing-off. You'd just go home and cry 😅

FKAT · 21/03/2025 11:17

I'm here to defend Elton John (not that he needs it!). I think he's under-rated because he sings in his own accent. He sounds north London / Watford and we are trained so much that popular music and soul in particular should be in an Americanish / mid-Atlantic tone. His voice is incredibly soulful and authentic. It elicits emotion, which is the whole point of music.

Saw Nick Cave in November - his voice just gets better and better. He's late 60s and you wouldn't believe it.

Lead singer of Future Islands (don't know name) - he is like a US Roland Gift - really soulful - weird phrasing and vocal/physical tics but it just works.

YY to Miley Cyrus. Beautiful voice.

Also Joy Crookes and Michael Kiwanuka.

For the guys Zayn from 1d, Bruno mars, Brendon urie, the lads from the exo vocal line kill it

ariana, lady gaga, Chlöe, yebba

That guy D.O.? From Exo has a lovely voice. .

NachoChip · 21/03/2025 11:20

Adam Lambert is the definitive comparison as he and George Michael I think are the only two who could sing with Queen after Freddie Mercury. He is incredible.

User32459 · 21/03/2025 09:41

Ezra has good variation. I don't think he's a particularly good live act though.

I saw him live and whilst his singing was great I didn't really feel any rapport/engagement with the audience and that made it a bit flat if that makes sense.

@ItsABeautifulDay25
Me and DH have a 16 year age gap and our music tastes are galaxys apart but we both agree George Michael's version of somebody to Love is unmatched.

MissRoseDurward · 21/03/2025 11:25

I never knew that Phil Collins wrote Groovy Kind of Love! The Mindbenders had the hit with it.

I once saw on tv Kylie doing a live show. She was doing a Lennon and McCartney song, but she couldn't hit the notes. Think it was Help - something that goes up high, anyway. It was arranged so the backing singers took over and sung the words she couldn't. Why choose to perform a song you can't sing?

Agree there'll never be anyone to equal Freddie.

‘Who wants to live forever’ is a shares in Kleenex song.

And 'Too Much Love Will Kill You'.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2025 11:26

Phil Collins didn't write it but he sang it in the film Buster.

Guinessandafire · 21/03/2025 11:36

Tom Chaplin from Keane has an amazing voice, full of emotion and real quality.

Billie Eilish has an amazing voice

Obviously Adele

Who's the lead singer of Biffo Clyro? excellent voice.

Post Malone - great variety

Going a bit older, Bjork's voice is incredible - her ' Debut' album is pure art. just amazing.

I actually hate the showbiz and spectacle type of performances

Oh you sound like fun 😂How can you "hate" watching an outstanding performer put on an amazing show??? Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Rolling Stones, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, Take That to name just a few performers who absolutely NAIL the "spectacle" shows live.

I agree that sometimes a fantastic vocalist just singing in an intimate and live show can be just as good, or even better. But to say you hate spectacle type performances - you obviously just haven't seen any good ones!

I've been to plenty in my time, but I just "don't get" all the glitzy "showbiz" stuff at all, never have. The "spectacle" just doesn't do it for me, whether it's pyrotechnics, costumes, special effect, etc. Same with musicals - I've seen some West End stage musicals and likewise, they don't do anything for me. I tend to just close my eyes and listen to the music. I'm just not into all the art, dance, etc, never have been. I can't relate to anything that's not real, so dressing up and prancing about a stage does nothing for me. Give me a bloke or woman stood on a stage, in pretty normal clothing, and just singing, and I'm happy!

I don't think Elton John's voice is anything special.

I agree. But George Michael on the other hand.... He had it all, a voice that stops you in your tracks, a song-writing gift, charisma and sex appeal. What a pity he was gay (and dead).

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/03/2025 11:48

I think Marti Pellow has a great voice. Loved his lockdown sessions
Miley Cyrus has a fantastic voice. I know people don't like her but her vocals are absolutely amazing

Have you heard the original by Garth Brooks?

Paul Durham of Black Lab is another singer with a voice guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. Same with Justin Currie, especially his solo stuff, his Parkinsons Diagnosis is so awful.

greatfrontage · 21/03/2025 11:50

Justin Hawkins, EVEN after all the battering he's given himself in the last 20 years. Absolutely fantastic voice.

SueSuddio · 21/03/2025 11:51

Nothing wrong with Elton's voice, especially back in his prime.

There's something about George Michael's voice that just makes you listen in awe. It's flawless and exciting and makes you feel good. What a gift to the world.

I like to think they'll be others but the 70s/80s was a particular golden era for these amazing all rounders so I'll keep playing them to my children!

OH YES!
I remember getting absolutely mortal at a work Christmas party where they once (and only once) had a free bar and bottles of wine with the meal. Several of us:
’Christmas time don’t let the be..’
At the top of our voices.
😂

Mika has an incredible voice but he's not as well known as any of them. I always thought he'd make a more fitting replacement for Freddie Mercury in Queen than Adam Lambert.

I came to say Mika. He's my absolute idol and his voice is unique. Sadly he's not as popular in the UK anymore, although I saw him in concert twice last year here, but he's still huge in other European countries, especially France and Italy. He has often been compared to Freddie Mercury, he's the only singer who comes close to him as far as I'm concerned.

It is very sad that he died, it is sad the way the press treated him. Its absolutely not a pity that he was gay 🤔 what a thing to say.

WorriedRelative · 21/03/2025 11:59

I think Freddie was genuinely a one off, the combination of an incredibly talented singer, enormous power, fantastic control, an easily identifiable voice PLUS star quality and performance PLUS songwriting talent PLUS being a good pianist and guitar player.

Montserrat Caballe thought his voice was amazing, she thought he could have been an opera singer if he'd wanted to be, and spoke hugely appreciatively of his singing talent. She was one of the greatest opera singers of all time and had sung with the best. He must have genuinely have been special to have impressed her so much.

Needhelp101 · 21/03/2025 12:03

Glad to see a PP has mentioned Celeste. She's got a voice that stops you in your tracks.

Sorry 🤦‍♀️ got caught up in a Phil Collins moment! Maybe somewhere deep in my mind I knew it wasn’t a Phil Collins original, but I was about 10 when Phil Collins covered it - that age where you don’t believe your parents know any of the ‘current’ songs your listening to, and everything is original 😉. Apologies

I think you're missing the point. I don't disapprove of his gayness, I just think he was one of the most attractive men I've ever seen, and as a woman, I would have been off his radar. And very sad about his death.
