AIBU to continue turning in the school gate?

NortonBuns · 19/03/2025 14:18

I drive my dd to school everyday and once I drop her off I turn around and drive home. I approach the back gate of the school and use this entrance to turn my car round so I can head back home.
The school have now put up a sign saying keep our children safe, no stopping, dropping off or turning in the entrance.
So where am I supposed to turn around? If I carry on I reach the front gate which is busier and has the busses. If I turn before I reach the back entrance I am doing a three point turn in busy school run traffic with lots of children walking and cycling.
So AIBU to say I am safest turning in the large double gate and ignoring the new sign?

This can’t be serious…

Some may say stop away from the school... walk a bit.

Set off earlier, park further away.

Why is your time and ability to turn around any more important than the 100s of other parents? Or children's safety?

HansHolbein · 19/03/2025 14:21

They have asked parents to stop doing it, so you should stop. I guess you could carry on but that’s quite disrespectful.

Where do the other parents park?

Pancakeflipper · 19/03/2025 14:21

Oh absolutely, you need to put yourself first and ignore any school requests.

SergeantDawkins · 19/03/2025 14:22

Bet the school put the sign up because parents complained about you!

Nursemumma92 · 19/03/2025 14:22

You keep driving until there is a safe place to stop and turn around... you can't drop your child off there now either by the sounds of it so use the drop off area and find a side road you can turn into to turn around.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 19/03/2025 14:23

Is it a dead end road? You can't carry on in the wrong direction and do a round route?

Absolutely. OP plow down any man, woman, child, or dog who stands in your way. I wouldn’t stand for this!

JandamiHash · 19/03/2025 14:23

I think we need a diagram OP

Holiday24 · 19/03/2025 14:23

As they've specifically put a sign up, it must be causing a problem or be potentially dangerous so no, I wouldn't carry on (coming from someone who isn't afraid to bend the rules on occasion, but not in this instance).

Is there nowhere you can turn around well away from the school, even if it adds a couple of mins to your journey?

ConnieSlow · 19/03/2025 14:24

What are the other parents doing?

PurpleThistle7 · 19/03/2025 14:24

I really, really hope this is a reverse but judging from the parking nonsense around my kids' schools am guessing sadly not.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 19/03/2025 14:24

Stop further away from the school. Maybe don't drive to school every day, stop a bit further away and walk the rest of the way

VoyageVoyager · 19/03/2025 14:24

Just run passing children over, OP. I mean, you wouldn't want to have to drive on past the school to circle around to where you want to be, right?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 19/03/2025 14:25

Yeah. Go for it. Absolutely. The sign applies to everyone except you. Your convenience is priority here. If you get out of the car and take a close look I bet you'll find "except Yourname" in small letters at the bottom.

festivemouse · 19/03/2025 14:25

This back gate to the school - is it an access point for children? I can totally understand why they wouldn’t want this being used by vehicles to turn. Find a local street or stopping place further away and walk a short distance to the school?

I’m sure as the parent of a child attending the school you can appreciate their position to keep children safe and want to do everything you can to look after the safety of your DD and other children

Badbadbunny · 19/03/2025 14:25

It's unreasonable for a car driver to expect to be able to drive so close to the school to do drop offs, even more so if using their gate to turn around. Sounds like time the school block off the roadway outside at school start/finish time for children's safety! Just park further away and walk your child to school if they're too young to walk themselves.

ValentinesGranny · 19/03/2025 14:25

They don't mean you, carry on. It's everyone else causing bother, you're far too special to kill a child.

Surprisedcupcake · 19/03/2025 14:26

Oh sure. The sign is clearly not meant for you. You're special.

AudiobookListener · 19/03/2025 14:26

Be the parent who knocks down and kills one of the kids, as happened at the school someone I know worked at.

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/03/2025 14:26

Stop being a twat and take notice of the sign.

nightmarepickle2025 · 19/03/2025 14:27

Park somewhere else where you can easily turn and walk your children a little way, it won't kill them or you to use your legs.

Writerbiter · 19/03/2025 14:27

Right, what you need is a big big car. Whatever you've got, get a bigger one. Got an Astra? You need a range Rover. Got a range rover? Buy a bus. Got a bus? Buy a double Decker bus. Really let the school and all the other parents know you need all the space in the road, you are the most important of all road users and you don't give a shit about their children or their safety. Fuck it, run a few reception kids over, that'll teach them.

Or, park further away where it's easy to turn and walk in with your DC.

its2025 · 19/03/2025 14:27

erm....... just drop you child off a bit further away from the school gates surely?? If Child is too young to walk themselves just park somewhere safe further away and walk them in. Dont add to the traffic chaos.

TickingAlongNicely · 19/03/2025 14:28

Are you related to the drivers who think its necessary to mount the pavement outside our local school so that "technically" they aren't on the double yellow line?

(Nb... it is illegal parking and they get tickets when the police do their irregular checks. There are frequent near misses)
