To be upset that fellow holiday goer told me I'm too old for my hair?

MoneyPieceNotMoneyShot · 18/03/2025 06:47

I'm rising 60 and have been obese all my life, have just got it under control, gone on a glow up and have decided to Fuuckit and I've headed off on my holiday of a lifetime.

I've spent most of today with another solo traveller and quite enjoyed her company, but am fully aware she's from a more forthright culture than me. (A close friend from home is also this nationality so I'm fully aware of this conversational style).

As we parted company she said that she felt she had to tell me that at my age I should be considering getting my hair cut to a more age appropriate length.

I fricking love my hair, my hairdresser has been with me through literal thick and thin, and had particularly encouraged me nurturing my length after The Bad Bad Bob Incident of October 23.

Low self confidence and self esteem through being morbidly obese for 30 years doesn't lend itself to resilience, so I'm now in my room trying to distract myself and win the day back to no avail.

Aibu to be upset or am I a soft numpty?

Ahha I got distracted by a very nice French man in the bar called, seriously, Nigel.

My new life rocks divorce becoming a distant memory yay.

Pre holiday Hairdresser shot, my attempts with hair implements look like a blindfolded Mr Tickle with the jitters had a go 😂

Wow. Beautiful hair. I commented earlier I bet it was jealousy. Enjoy your holiday and your beautiful hair.

Growlybear83 · 18/03/2025 09:31

Having seen your latest post, all I can say is your hair is magnificent! How DARE this woman criticise you! I’m very angry on your behalf and I can only assume that she’s jealous.

Disturbia81 · 18/03/2025 09:33

Gorgeous hair OP, I’ll be wearing mine long as long as I want to.

caramac04 · 18/03/2025 09:33

One person’s unsolicited opinion isn’t worth much if anything. I would totally ignore her and concentrate how fab I look losing the weight.
I cut my long hair decades ago due to the fashion advice I was too old for long hair. Do I regret it? Absolutely! I’ve never been able to grow it long again. I’d bloody love a messy bun and that would suit me. Equally I’d love to waft long hair about.

Ignore her.

IThoughtHeWasWithYou · 18/03/2025 09:33

OP your hair is beautiful. I hope mine looks like this when I hit my 60s!

averylongtimeago · 18/03/2025 09:37

Dutch you say? They do have a reputation for being “direct”😂

Take no notice- and if she does make another such comment, the MN favorite “did you mean to be so rude?” should be your answer!
Your hair looks great btw- from another one over 60 with “age inappropriate “ long hair!

FatherFrosty · 18/03/2025 09:37

Oh my god. I am genuinely jealous. You’ve stunning hair.

my neighbour told me at 40 I was too young to be grey. She only knocked to ask if she could access her garden and came out with that gem

thats definitely not played on my mind since Hmm

Nanny0gg · 18/03/2025 09:38

TequilaNights · 18/03/2025 08:01

What's an age appropriate length

Ignore and continue being a happy little age inappropriate rebel haha enjoy your break.

One that suits you and you like

dudsville · 18/03/2025 08:44

I'm from a more forthright culture, and I would consider that rude.

Interesting point - I wonder if there may be an element of 'Oh, we Dutch (or whoever) have a reputation for being forthright, so I'm going to be rude!'

When I lived in Canada, I knew a woman who would come round and take food from my fridge or go through my drawers, and when I objected would laugh 'Oh, you uptight Brits! That's perfectly normal here!' Another Canadian friend heard of this and said 'No, dammit, that's just rude!'

RaspberryBeretxx · 18/03/2025 09:39

Gorgeous hair OP! I think it's a very outdated opinion that we should have short hair as we get older. Or that we should police people's hair at all!

Backinthedress · 18/03/2025 09:41

As someone slightly younger than you I am flipping jealous of your hair. It looks beautiful - thick, healthy, long, swishy, stunning colour.

I'd say the green eyed monster is playing a big part in her comments. I would never tell you to cut your hair, but I would be asking you if you take any supplements to make it do that because I want!

DinoLil · 18/03/2025 09:42

I'm fat, 53 and have waist length curly hair. My DM is the one who tells me it's an inappropriate length for my age, it makes me look older, it drags my face down. So I go another year and another year, growing it that bit longer.

I'm related to her, obviously, not much I can do other than smile and wave. And keep growing it!

But to put up with crap like that from someone else? As a PP has suggested, I think envy may be at play. I'd be tempted to say 'awwww are you jealous, bless your cotton socks, take some supplements and maybe you'll be as lucky as me to have such fab hair'.

I bet your hair is gorgeous. I get complimented on mine all the time. You keep swishing those locks, hold your head high and know you're rising above such petty comments.

Toooldforlonghair · 18/03/2025 09:43

OP look at my user name!
British women (yes it's usually women) also seem to have a problem with older women having long hair. It never fails to amaze me the hostilty my hair arouses including from my own DM!

I had Alopecia Aerata and wore a wig for 5 years then during lockdown it started to regrow and is now waist length. I'm 62 and treasure my hair especially knowing that it could fall out again at any time. I am never cutting it short again whatever people think!

Keep your hair, wear what you want and eat what you want!

PS My standard 'grey rock' answer to the negative comments is:
Why does it bother you? Usually shuts them up.

ThymeScent · 18/03/2025 09:43

She wants Nigel and he prefers you!
And right there you have your movie screenplay!
Gotta get someone with best hair to play your part - and which actor who Nigel? 😀😀
on another note I think healthy looking hair is the best, whatever length.I am envious of you because I had luscious long hair that fell
ouy during a stressful divorce in my 50s and don’t grow back. But I would compliment you on it if I saw you - people like her must lead utterly miserable lives looking for negativity.

TobaccoFlower · 18/03/2025 09:44

I agree she's old fashioned. Julianne Moore is 64. Anyone think long hair is inappropriate on her? No. She looks great.

DinoLil · 18/03/2025 09:44

Whoa!! Just spotted the photo! Gorgeous, gorgeous hair! She is definitely jealous. 100%.

LaPetitePouleRousse · 18/03/2025 09:47

OMG that IS gorgeous! No wonder French Nigel was caught up in your aura! 😍

I just knew you were going to say she had a 'chic bob' - aka 'politician's hair'... great if it suits you, like a Chanel jacket suits you if you're flat chested...

That colour is Everything, btw... 😚👌

Cholulita · 18/03/2025 09:47

Nigel sounds nice! Go for it.

I was going to guess Dutch! it's unbelievable how they can live up to their stereotype.

StrawberryDream24 · 18/03/2025 09:47

Beautiful hair.

She needs to learn some manners.

LaPetitePouleRousse · 18/03/2025 09:49

PS having seen your hair, I hope her 'chic bob' suits her obvious green eyes... 🤢

Edited

Excellent answer!!! Am going to shamelessly adopt that -would work for lots of things!!!

Berlinlover · 18/03/2025 09:49

Oh wow, your hair is amazing. I had chemo last year, lost all my long hair and even though it’s growing back someone thought I was a man last week.

Carpedimum · 18/03/2025 09:50

She must be Dutch! 😂

You hold on to your hair @MoneyPieceNotMoneyShot don’t dwell on the (unsolicited) opinions of others!

BreedingHeifer · 18/03/2025 09:53

It's just her opinion. What does she know? Try and let it wash over you.

I went to a new hairdresser yesterday and her opening line was 'Wow! I'm glad you've come to me today' followed by a grimace. She then went on to tell me that I can't have long hair with my hair type, particularly now I'm older (it has always been long) and told me I 'needed' at least 6 inches off. I wouldn't let her cut that much and she was pissed off. At the end of the cut she reiterated that she really neede to take more off but 'it was up to' me (with a sigh).

Damn right it's up to me! I like my long hair and I take care of it (aside from the bayalage disaster of 2023). Obviously I won't be going back to her!

Edited to add - your hair is gorgeous! Seems like she was jealous...!

MoneyPieceNotMoneyShot · 18/03/2025 09:30

She was gorgeous with a very chic bob. We'd had a very pleasant afternoon and I was quite sorry to see her go. Until the cutting adieu.

Embracing le francais a ce moment because Nigel 😉

I think short hairs looks horrendous on just about everyone but I keep my opinion to myself. That probably would have been my response to her - I hate short hair so it will never happen. I was forced to have short hair until I was late teens and will never do it again.

My hair is about where the back of the chair is in your pic. A bit wilder when I don't have the hairdresser assist. It's thick and naturally curly and very much does what it wants - I learnt a long time ago not to argue with it. I had a lovely young girl call it hair goals not that long ago (courtesy no doubt of the hairdresser's great styling skills).
